Why Lucifer being a good person is fucking stupid:

So in the show canon Lucifer and Lilith were kicked out because they were dreamers and gave Eve the fruit of knowledge. Based off the lore of Helluva Boss Lucifer 99% is the sin of Pride. In the show Lucifer is just a quirky theatre major who just wants to reconnect with his daughter...

Ok so lets analyze why this does not make sense in the worldbuilding. Lucifer is the King of Hell, a.k.a. a place full of homicidal maniacs and various other people. And since angelic weapons can harm angels (which is stupid btw) and sinners have been stealing weapons left behind by angels... Lucifer logistically cannot be a good person because these people could just decide to try to murder him if he was too weak. He needs the sinners and populace to fear him or respect him. Since Helluva takes place in the same setting Lucifer must have put in the social hierarchy of hell, approved it or doesn't do anything about it. Which means he plays some part in Stolas and Stella being forced to wed and the imps plus hellhounds being treated like garbage.

Then we get into story construction problems. Like if Charlie and Lucifer have a good relationship instantly then almost all the problems in the show can be solved at a snap of a finger because of Lucifer's power level. Its a similar problem with Alastor but worse because Lucifer is stronger. Like Alastor tho is implied to be weakened and forced to do this so there is intrigue storywise and limits on his personality and power. Lucifer is angel and can just like idk zap the Vees. Theres no threat, risk or anything now.

Also this Lucifer may have slept with Eve which either implies he cheated on Lilith or Adam was cheated on twice and Lucifer also agreed with genocide

And what wouldve been better is Lucifer being a shitty dad or person WHICH WE HAD IN THE PILOT. Like Lucifer being awful is actually better for the previous reasons and Charlie's own character. Like Charlie is supposed to be an underdog despite being princess and has an impossible task and if her father doesnt believe in her theres another personal level to then and maybe some of the audience could connect with her. And if Charlie's dad hates her or something you could easily write in and make Charlie struggle more by having him cut off her resources. Heck if her dad is awful then you can write in how Charlie feels about being so morally different. Then slowly build up to when we see Lucifer for the first time and actually have it feel special

This just makes me missed the pilot even more. While it did have it's own problems with the worldbuilding and characters, a majority of its ideas were still believable.

A better angle for Lucifer would be if he was a morally grey character. He can still be a decent father but a terrible ruler. Of course, that angle wouldn't work because everything in this show has to be black and white, where it literally tells you in a song, "Cause the rules are black and white" despite the same show critiquing its Heaven for the same black and white thinking.

I'm not against the idea of Lucifer being a decent father because there are still other ways the show can create conflict between him and Charlie. For example, he does get her the meeting into Heaven but it's at a cost. If she's unable to convinced Heaven, she has to abandon the hotel. Or maybe he is skeptical of Charlie's idea so he makes her overcome the hotel's problems, like the Vees, alone, to prove how strong and passionate she is. Of course, if they hurt Charlie, he can easily kill them, but it can serve as a great character moment for the both of them. Charlie learning Hell is brutal, Lucifer now hating the hotel because it will hurt Charlie, and create a new conflict where Charlie and Lucifer are against each other. Or the fact Lucifer was the one who allowed the exterminations to happened and Charlie has to undo her father's actions.

I'm only focusing on Lucifer being a "good" person through parenting because almost everything else, he's a bad guy. Not only was this the same man who allowed the yearly genocide of the sinners but also he created the classist, racist social hierarchy and system in Hell, and let the pride ring become so awful, the overlords, a group of powerful sinners, are taking advantage of regular sinners daily.

I wish this show was actually about the hotel and that she had gotten the "alastor is allowed to not tell us his backstory because we need a season 2 " treatment, if this show actually follow the premise of redemtion Niffty, V and Angel (heh all bugs) would be the most complex ones and satisfecho ones to write about

NIFTY she is conected to Al and im fascinanted to know why he favors her so much, why shes like this do Al know- does she even know? Its this her cope, was she murder or the murderer ?? Was she too a rasing overlord? Its her past the reason ? How does she feel in general honestly shes done so little in the show but i wanna disect her n know why shes like this so bad

Sorry for the rant n probably bad english just had to get that out my sistem at 1 am lol

Niffty was done dirty by the writers, everyone but her, got character development or a moment that hinted to some sort of character depth (Even if it was shallow).

Why the writers decided to reverse the seasons I have no idea. Charlie finding out Heaven is corrupted doesn't work since the plotline hinges on the audience's investment in her reaction and the cast, but why should we? We don't see the cast trying to actively improve themselves and the show repeatedly tells us sinners are the worst. At this point, it makes no sense for the show to continue the hotel premise because we know Heaven is corrupted now. What's the point, when we already know any effort the cast puts towards redemption will be in vain?

The characters are fulled of mystery and great ideas but the show refuses to explore them. I was surprised by the lack of references at their human backstories. The cast's human lives are why they're in hell and the person they are now. Like, how are we supposed to know Husk's cheesy love for magic came from watching the magic shows in the casinos he grew up in????????? That seems like a very important piece of information to know about his character, considering it's one of the few things he still loves. In that one line alone, we learn so much about Husk and why he turned out to be an alcoholic gambler. At the end of the show despite spending time with characters, I feel like I don't know them as much as I should. I don't know their motivations, beside for Al and Angel we don't see them struggling through their flaws (The show has Husk tell us, writing 101 /sarc), and the show doesn't really explore the cast's relationships with each other or their world. So any potential information we could have learned about them from their interactions through others characters and their environments isn't utilized.

The show just keeps important info locked, tells you character's infos that would have benefited better from showing it, and then except the audiences fill in the missing gaps between info-dumps.

Don't worry about ranting, it's was fun to read and respond too. I understood you just fine.

What would u want to do with Alastors character and development?

I would explore the Al trio (Al, Husk, & Niffty) dynamic and his manipulative and abusive side more.

One of the many things I'm disappointed in the show is the lack of exploration for the friendships, specifically for the trio. Al, Husk, and Niffty's friendships have alway been interesting to me because of it's mystery and potential. Out of all the people in Hell Al could be with, he choses Niffty and Husk. What makes them so special? How did they meet? What are Husk, Alastor, and Niffty's thoughts on each other, and how does it create conflict or funny gags within the friend group? Before the show, we only had drawings and livestreams from Viv to tell us little bits of the friendship.

After watching the show, I don't know anything about them as a group than I did before, because all three characters never interact with each other on screen. They’re alway split into duos, so I got even more questions now! I doubt Niffty sold her soul to Alastor, and if this is the case, is Niffty aware of Al’s abuse? If not, how does that affect the dynamic of the trio, and what does it tell us about each separate characters? I already said this before and I will say this again, Viv comes up with excellent concepts but either fails miserably at executing them or never touches them again. How do you have a friend group like this and not explore it???? Especially with someone as manipulative and abusive as Al as the leader, which brings me to the next part of this rant.

I want to see Al be evil. I’m tired of the show taking place in Hell but never see the true horrors of it. This is where the most vile, awful human beings go, they were so ruthless and evil, Lucifer left. Seeing more of Al’s dark side would have been nice as we get a glimpse to why Hell is so awful, it’s because of sinners like Alastor. We could see how overlords like him rule the pride ring and the subtle manipulative tactics they use to maintain their powers. It’s for this reason why I found Vox interesting at first. Vox’s introduction we see the few ways he manipulates Hell through scams and hypnotism then never again do we see him use those tactics. I’m curious how awful characters like Al and Valentino treat the people closest to them and the toxicity of their friendships. For me, I wish we gotten more scenes similar to the Husk and Al one in Ep 5 and Ep7 when Charlie made a deal with Al.

It Had To Be You

Before I get into my big explaining rant, reblogs are very much appreciated! I know this is usually a rant blog but when I spend so long on a drawing I want to have people see it and stare at it like I do LOL

Also for the ALT text, a lot of the details are going to be explained below so if you’d like extra details please read!

So, my designs! I really hate Husk’s design; as in I hate drawing it. It’s too red and tiny for me, Husk is very orange and round to me, he’s like a really chubby cat that you flip over in the bed and smack their belly and kiss em. He also kinda reminds me of Tigerstar from Warriors but like if he was a more morally correct person. Kind of. I removed all of the red from Husk and replaced it with little motifs of orange and brown like in his ears, his eyebrows, wings, and the little patch on his snout. For his wings I tried to base them around a Brown Thrasher because they fit the colour I needed and they’re very defensive birds which is a trait I’d like to see in Husk more. Seeing him protecting others with his wings in Episode 8 was a very cute touch and I want more of that. Oh and the little orange bit on his snout was based on one of my old cats named Whiskey and I thought that was fitting cause yknow. Whiskey. 🥃. Also it’s cute!

Part of Husk’s orange colouration also falls under some inspiration I received from @bluehazardanonymous whom you may see on my blog again. But they sent me a very interesting colour chart and it made my brain go funny

Husk’s design has a lot of orange, yellow, and small hints of red like his undone bowtie and hat band/ace of hearts card. The orange for gluttony is mostly related to alcohol and such, meanwhile the yellow in his eyes, shirt patch, and on the button on his hat are to show greed from things like gambling and possible leftovers from being an overlord. I don’t think you can just go from being all powerful to some random bartender and NOT have some kind of thirst for power right???? That also bleeds into the red parts (haha cause blood red) to keep his design on the warm side and have a little bit of anger in there.

His clothes are also supposed to look a bit sloppy and kinda sad cause I mean. He is. But they are also all relatively formal items of clothing. By the way I’m never drawing this guy shirtless, sorry you need to beg and pay for that/j

Now for Angel. With Angel being pink-ish and how I usually draw the rest of Hell, I try to make Hell more gross looking and greenish/sickly, generally unpleasant, so that Angel is more eye catching and pops out more like a celebrity would. A lot of the cast in my head is more orange/maroon coloured, not a lot of pink or salmon colours. Of course pink is under lust on the colour wheel, but I personally don’t like chalking Angel up to just his job, nor do i really like using “true” pink. I always keep him in this range:

Also that white is not for him it’s for other things, I always make him a cream-ish colour. I like pink with red undertones always, especially for Angel. It shows his job very blatantly if you take a simple glance at him, but if you’re nuts like me and colour pick from these that I use, you’ll see a lot of them are closer to red, rather than the bright pink-ish-purple colour for lust. And also closer to his original more purple design!

I think it goes without saying that Angel has a lot of pent up anger and frustration that he hides with his persona and humour, and I think trying to show some of that in his colours is a lot more interesting than just haha pink gay spider. I dunno.

Also I thought these little cowlick flip thingies on the side were really cute

I was originally going to make the sign in the back purple since that’s usually the colour of most XXX signs in Hazbin, but the yellow makes everything else look a lot more dingy and gross while still being bright and I love that. Also the yellow is kind of a shallow jab of my own at the adult entertainment industry, a lot of this stuff is just people being exploited for money but I will go on a tangent about this if I don’t shift topic!! Anyway. A lot of the background isn’t super visible, but based on the colours I was kinda going for a more envy & wrath & greed section of the pride ring. Just seems like a good place to smoke. The rain doesn’t hold much symbolism to it but it is there to make the area seem more unpleasant. Yknow how it rains sometimes and the sewage in the street comes up? Like that.

Im really happy with a bunch of stuff in this art. 10 hours, 184+ layers, and 11751 strokes is probably the most I have ever done for.. anything????? Even if you don’t like the art I hope you appreciate the long rant LOL

i can understand getting inspired by the randomest things and designs not looking exactly like the inspiration but to actually think that people will look at mimzy and say mmhmm yes a chicken is absolutely stupid

viv designs don't reflect on anything the only thing they prove is how lazy she is

You’re right, if Mimzy is supposedly a chicken then Viv failed at designing her because where is the chicken?

As an artist I get putting little reference ideas in your work but I really have to question Viv��s current skills as an artist and creator.

Over the last years Viv’s skills as an artist have regressed because she refuses to go out of her comfort zone. It has gotten so bad that people can’t even tell what types of demons the characters are supposed to be and Viv has to tell them. There is no better way to say it, when you want to explain to your audience, a key design component, you failed the execution.

Viv’s usual responses to these reactions is often times, very petty and condescending. Instead of taking this time to reflect and think how she can improve, she belittles the people asking the questions. In her Mimzy tweet, she just breezes by the criticisms from fans and Jewish people how Mimzy fits into antisemitic stereotypes (and she does, intentional or not).

Narrative: Handling Complicated Situations

I saw this Twitter thread about this particular scene from Spooky Month 6 and I really enjoy seeing people engaged in the discussion understand the grey areas and complexities in this scene and that no one’s truly right or wrong. No one is going “He was so mean to her”.

Despite Father Gregor’s harsh words and his strict ideals, we as the audience know he comes from a good place. He’s shown to genuinely want to help people and cares about the boys. We also know Lila loves her son and wants to protect him but the show isn’t afraid to call her out on her faults. We see the consequences of the boys’ actions with the demon. Even then, we see their personal issues that we can sympathize with.

This also had me thinking about the Hellaverse (particularly HB) and how it often fails at presenting nuanced situations like Stolitz, Stolas and Stella, or Blitz and his sister, Barbie. Usually, they only show one character’s perspective, expect you to sympathize with them, and frame the other character as one-dimensional so far. The only situation I can think of that was given some nuance was Stolas and Octavia’s relationship in Looloo Land. However, after that episode the show stopped exploring Octavia as a character and wanted to give Stolas more sympathy.

Father Gregor could’ve easily been made into a one-note character, given his brief appearance in the last Spooky Month, but the show decided not to do that. They put effort into giving depth to almost all the characters. Don’t mean to sound cliche but if Father Gregor was written by Vivziepop or in HH/HB, he would be this one-dimensional, judgmental, self righteous character you’re meant to hate (pretty much Lute). He would’ve called Lila a bad mother instead of irresponsible so the audience can easily side with Lila.

Both of these are indie cartoons. The difference is one allows characters to be flawed/human while the other is more concerned with the audience liking certain characters.
