people struggle with the idea that dean canonically talks about his feelings in the show because they seem to think the main obstacle in his life is his own obstinate refusal to reach out? and not the fact his needs aren't being met and none of the people in his life can fully help with that because THEIR needs aren't being met either. also all of them kill for a living. turns out it's hard to talk therapy your way out of that

The only thing crazier than a character clearly intended to be gay but kept in the plausible deniability subtext zone due to censorship issues is a character in a series where only like one of the writers clearly intended them to be gay. So this character is just gay sometimes and nobody acknowledges it

my dtiys challenge is from @the-michaelsword's desinatural series! their poem selections from rabindranath tagore's works were great to read through alongside their melancholic art, and this one in particular was beautifully compelling.

as an aside, it's cool that tagore translated his poems himself, and i'm inspired to find poets from my own cultural background and revisit some koreannatural ideas.

Hi fellow Destiel Fanartists! Are you looking for a fun challenge to start your creative year 2024? Are you up for getting to know some fellow fanartists on a deeper level? Then you are at the right place. Welcome to our first Destiel DTIYS Challenge!

What does DTIYS mean?

It means “Draw This In Your Style”. This is an art challenge where artists draw an already existing artwork, but in their own style.

So, how does it work?

There will be two Phases in this challenge:

Phase One: Secret Valentines

In Phase One, Artists will sign up to parttake and then get assigned a Secret Valentine. They will then redraw one of their Secret Valentine's existing artworks, reimagined in the Artist's own style.

Phase Two: Open Challenge

In Phase Two, everyone, signed up or not, can parttake in the DTIYS challenge. For this, a list of artists who signed up for it will be posted and you can redraw their art in your style.

When will this take place?

You can sign up for Phase One until February 9th. Posting is scheduled for February-March. You can sign up as a listed artist for Phase Two until March 10th. Posting is scheduled for March-April. For further details check under the cut.

General Rules

You can use both digital and traditional media. You are not allowed to use AI tools in this challenge. If you have your own ideas, want to draw the character in a slightly different pose or change colors, you are free to do so. However the artwork should still be recognizable as a redraw of the original artwork. This challenge is open to participants of all experience levels.

This is an art challenge to celebrate Destiel fanartists and their diversity in style. Therefore, only Destiel fanart is allowed.

Both SFW and NSFW art are allowed, please mind the according Tumblr terms and conditions and post only a link to your art, if necessary. Minors are not allowed to parttake for this reason. If you sign up, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old.

Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and ableism will not be tolerated in this challenge.

I'm thinking still about @shallowseeker's excellent post about Cas as Heaven's results guy and tbh it's genuinely such an under-explored aspect of his character. I think because Cas is so endearing, and because he spends so much of his early era on the show very much a fish out of water learning to navigate human stuff, and because so much of his past is implied rather than shown, it's really easy to woobify him and forget that this is a part of who he is, too.

like, we see time and time again that there is a reason Cas was Heaven's go-to guy when they needed something done

as Shal so wonderfully pointed out, Cas was Heaven's fixer in a lot of ways. their 007. their Ketch, if you will. the guy they sent in because they knew he would get the damn job done. when they needed someone to take point on raising the Michael Sword from Hell, Cas was their man! there's a reason so much effort and so many resources were poured into him over and over again by Heaven's higher-ups. there's a reason Naomi thought retrieving Castiel from Purgatory "at the cost of many lives" was a fair bargain. there's a reason she spent millennia "fixing" him instead of just killing him when he outlived his usefulness— he just never outlives his usefulness!

he's Heaven's jack-of-all-trades, a creative problem-solver and skilled soldier and deeply charismatic and popular with the other angels. and, as Anna pointed out, would do whatever was asked of him... or at least, he would as long as he was fresh from Naomi's lobotomy chair 😬 And all of that combines to make him an incredibly valuable asset!

I feel like we get so caught up in the fact that Cas is also a deeply compassionate, warm-hearted, loving person who heals babies and makes his son soup when he's sick and has strong opinions about fruit preserves that it's easy to forget that he is also this.

and I think it's a crying shame that it's so easily overlooked in meta and fanworks because it's at the core of so much of the internal tension within his character. he doesn't want to be this! he wants to be something softer and quieter! but at the same time, there very much is a part of him that's proud of this! he knows he's the guy who can get things done, he's the one who won't shirk away from doing reprehensible things if that's what it takes to get results! and he hates this about himself... but also his angel family has spent the entirety of linear Time ensuring that his entire sense of self-worth is tied exclusively to this trait! it's complicated! it's not who he wants to be but also it's the root of his sense of identity! who is he if he's not the guy who is willing to rip a man's mind to bits to get information, or kill an innocent person to complete a spell, or barter sneaky under the table deals with the King of Hell if that's what's necessary to get the job done?

and I feel like leaving this aspect of him off the table when composing a portrait of Castiel robs him (and us) of the chance to answer that question. the fundamental conflict of Cas's character demands a resolution to this tension between who he wants to be and who he has been in the past, and it's not a tension that can be resolved without squarely facing exactly what that past looks like.
