The 6ixth Man in the Dominican
by Brenden Stanley
A Different Look
Prelude
Life is surely a journey and through it I have been fortunate enough to experience many opportunities while meeting some dope people along the way. As I currently reside in Ohio, in efforts to complete my second degree. I met my friend, teammate, and co-worker within The 6ixth Man, Brenden Stanley. I wish I had the pleasure of describing the featured article below as one my own experiences in my life, however that honor belongs to Mr. Stanley. Who through Ashland University's Fellowship of Christian Athletes was able to go on a missionary trip to the Dominican Republic earlier in May this year. I recall one of the first comments he said to me when he first he returned back to the states as "I have never played that much basketball in my life!" In this featured piece he details his time spent in DR. -Jordan Murphy
“We all know”
Growing up, we all know that no matter what our situation is and how our life is playing out that it is most likely in better shape than many other places in the world. The United States is a land of free people from different cultures that have the same chance to pursue the American Dream as the person next to them. But, what if you lived in a place where there wasn’t freedom or a dream? Flying into Santo Domingo, the heart of the  culture of the Dominican Republic, a person can think of many different scenarios of what could go wrong on this trip south of our nation's borders. I was excited on the other hand. Stepping off the plane and stepping onto the soil that produces stars like Big Papi (David Ortiz), Jose Bautista and many more MLB sensations. That right there should stop you in your tracks of a thought process. MLB stars… What about other sports? What about basketball players?
Baseball is King
In a city ruled by baseball, it is difficult to find the next young star participating in another sport when they will be showing up late to a tryout because of their baseball practice. The country itself produces pro athletes yearly that enter the MLB at early ages because they have already been playing since they were young. What people look past or do not see are the nation's pro athletes. There are so many pro athletes that leave to go play in the MLB but, what is behind the scenes are the others. Pro Dominican basketball players. National Team members that represent their country on the court instead of on the baseball field. When i say behind the scenes, I mean one would never even know they were professionals until you see them play. These young men are not blessed with the facilities and gear that the baseball industry provides these people. So, where do they practice? Where do they play? Although there are arenas throughout the country that host basketball, these young men play pick up on the streets and courts that are litterally every half mile in the villages. These courts are everywhere. Being born and raised in the states, I was used to playing with a regulation ball and correct psi on a court that is capable of hosting the human race for a pick up game. Down there, it is different. If there is a hoop, and somehow, some way, you can find a ball blown up enough to shoot, you were playing basketball. The professionals in the inner city of Santo Domingo run the show. These are the guys that are showing up, giving directions and choosing their own teams before beginning. It took our group a whole thirty seconds to realize these guys were the real deal before we started asking questions about their country’s pro league. Now, am I comparing these people to LeBron? Kobe? Absolutely not.
However, for the given circumstances, I wanted to know more about these guys. Where they played, for what team and if they represented their nation or not. These were the young men that the next generation looked up to and wanted to play with. In a country and city where baseball is king, the people crave a new sports setting, they crave to play a sport different from the social norm, they crave to be like LeBron.
    We Don’t Know
So do we really know what the rest of the world is like? When it comes to basketball do we know where to find the passion? You can find passion for the sport in the streets. You can find it in the middle of nowhere at an abandoned school where you’d think no one would dare to go. You can find it anywhere there are passionate people. We were always told that the rest of the world was not as lucky as us. We were told that there are many places in the world where people are not free. I went to the Dominican expecting that. I expected to see the level of poverty that I was not used to. I expected to see kids running the streets and chickens on front porches. I did not expect to experience a level of passion and happiness for basketball, people and life that I did. I have told people since I have returned home, I was not surprised that these kids did not have something as little as a basketball. I was shocked at the fact that when I gave these kids a basketball, they were deeply and truly happy. It was like a gift of gold from a king. These kids were so happy that they left their one room shack to come to the village court on that day. It was very rewarding yet, eye opening. The Dominicans that I was blessed to stay with are committed to their faith, happy with their lives and passionate about the sport of basketball.
Down there, you do not see people swarming the baseball fields to listen to the word of God and play for hours on end until they cannot see or get kicked out. The people crave change like all people. And in the Dominican Republic, basketball is on the rise. Whatever, the future holds with this nation, one things for sure, they will continue to produce professional athletes. Let’s hope that basketball will see some soon!

What is A Bust? Anthony Bennett
Written By Abael Solomon
The Brooklyn Nets recently cut Anthony Bennett on January 4th (ESPN.com) thus posing the question is Anthony Bennett a bust or does he still have time? At 23, the journeyman forward has had a hard time finding his game in the NBA. Bennett has played for 4 teams in 4 years, showing flashes at times of being great. The ceiling was high coming out of college, but many wondered why he was chosen as a #1 overall pick?
The UNLV product was drafted without much hype, Cleveland drafted Bennett ahead of No. 2 pick Victor Oladipo and No. 3 selection Otto Porter (ESPN.com).  It shocked the NBA community, this kid from Canada being picked so high. The NBA players in this generation are now defined by their potential and how high their ceiling is. We can say he might have time but it looks like Bennett wont be back in the NBA this season after signing for Fenebrahce in the Turkish league (ESPN.com).
It might be safe to say that the NBA Draft of 2013 was the weakest draft of the 2000 era.  Please find below the players picked after Anthony Bennett.
 2. Victor Oladpio (Orlando Magic)
3. Otto Porter (Washington Wizards)
4. Cody Zeller (Charlotte Bobcats)
5. Alex Len (Phoenix Suns)
6. Nerlens Noel (New Orleans Pelicans, traded to the Philadelphia 76ers)
7. Ben McLemore (Sacramento Kings)
8. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (Detroit Pistons)
9. Trey Burke (Minnesota Timberwolves)
10. CJ McCollum (Portland Trail Blazers)
11. Michael Carter-Williams (76ers)
Who was the worst #1 pick of all time?

Westbrook Contributing More Than Just Stats and Still gets Snubbed in All-Star Game!?
Written By: Robert Mason
With the AllStar game quickly approaching many are question how Russell Westbrook was not listed as one of the starters for the Western All-Star team? Reminder Westbrook was named the MVP of the previous two AllStar games(2015, 2016). He has already surpassed his mark of triple-doubles from last season with 22 this season and 18 in the 2015-15 campaign. Last season’s number tied Magic Johnson’s record for most triple-doubles since the 1981-82 season. Although Oscar Robinson’s record of 41 triple-doubles in a season seems almost impossible, if Westbrook continues to put up similar numbers as he has in the first half of the season, he has a chance.
The players named to start for the Western Conference AllStar team are Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis and James Harden. According to SportsCenter Russell Westbrook ranks higher then both James Harden and Steph Curry amongst the media as well as the players. However, when it comes to his raking amongst the fans his comes in third to the two guards who are set to start in the AllStar game. Record aside, last season’s 18 was 5 more than any other player in the NBA. This season Westbrook has 11 more than any other player, leaving James Harden trailing with 13.
As if this statistical feat is not enough, it is only a byproduct of what Russell Westbrook is truly bringing to the NBA game after game. Westbrook’s success and historic numbers is a result of his competiveness that drives his relentless effort during his games.
Westbrook often takes a bad rap for his flagrant style and his outburst of emotions. But he’s bringing back a style to the NBA reminiscent of the Detroit Bad Boys, and a time when rivalries went to war, and put it all on the line.
The NBA has gotten away from the physical style of play during the Bulls-Pistons era in the late 80s, and even earlier in the Bird-Magic rivalry. Although people viewed that style as too physical, and dubbed it as ruining the game of basketball, there was no question of the player’s effort and aggression to achieve victory. At the end of the day the player that wants it more will find a way to win, and Russell Westbrook is going all in day in and day out to dominate his opponent. Did the fans get this wrong not voting Westbrook in as a starter? Will Westbrook win MVP for a third straight year?

After Terrible Start, Wizards WERE Above .500
Written By: Greg Champion
December 2nd, 2016. The Washington Wizards leave the floor at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX following a gut wrenching 107-105 loss to the Spurs. The Wizkidz fought hard throughout the game, with John Wall scoring a layup with just seconds to go to tie the game at 105. The only problem was Kawhi Leonard didn’t want the game going to overtime and hit the game winning basket the next possession. Following the loss, the Wizards had fallen to 6-12 to start the season. The Wizards were now 13th in the Eastern conference, and only 4 teams in the league had worse records. And the criticism was coming from all angles. It started with the most obvious question, whether the Wizards should have paid Bradley Beal $130M this summer. Then it trickled down to was Scott Brooks the right hire at head coach, and eventually was it time to trade John Wall. That’s right, former Grantland boss Bill Simmons raised the question on his podcast.
“They’re going to have to come to grips with whether they want to trade John Wall or not, and what they can get for him. If I’m running Washington, I would trade John Wall right now. I would just move him for picks and do a complete tankapalooza and try to rebuild and put myself in a much better spot. I think it’s going to take years to put a decent team around him, and I think the fact that Kevin Durant didn’t even want to meet with them should’ve been a come-to-Jesus moment for that team, and apparently it wasn’t.”
It was hard to argue Simmons’ points. The Wizards had missed the playoffs last year in what was the final year leading up to the Kevin Durant sweepstakes. And up to that point this season they were looking like a lock for the lottery. The often injured Bradley Beal was battling injuries again and they weren’t getting consistent production from other spots. But change would soon come. The Wizards would finish the month of December with an impressive 10-5 record, including quality victories over the Bucks, Clippers, and Hornets. Fast forward to today and the Wizards were .500 (19-18) for the first time since early last season when they were 6-5. After a tough loss to the Celtics last night where Isaiah Thomas torched the Wiz for 20 points in the 4th quarter they're back to .500. Yeah it’s been a rough couple of months for Wizards fans, but now the team is finally clicking. Having won 13 of their last 20 games, including 10 in a row at home, the Wizards are now the 8th seed out east and only 4.5 games behind the 3rd place Celtics.
So what changed? Well for starters I believe John Wall is finally healthy. Wall entered the season coming off summer knee surgery on both knees and it was evident that he hadn’t fully recovered. Scott Brooks held the all-star point guard out of many back to backs and limited his minutes. Since Wall has been fully healed he’s been a far better scorer than in years past while continuing to be a pass first PG. Wall is currently averaging career best in almost every statistical category (23.5 ppg, 10.3 assists and 2.2 steals). He’s been a true leader for the Wizards this season.
Another reason for Washington’s recent success is Bradley Beal and his continued development. While a lot of people still feel he was undeserving of the $130M contract extension, that’s what the market called for people, get over it. Beal has been able to stay relatively healthy this year (minor hamstring and ankle injuries did sideline him) and he’s been far more aggressive than in years past. Beal has shown the ability to be that scorer the Wizards were hopeful for when they drafted him 3rd overall. He’s also averaging career best in points per game and field goal percentage, 22.1 and 45.6% respectively.
Furthermore the Wizards have received huge contributions from role players, especially Otto Porter who’s emerging as a key contributor on a nightly basis. Porter has been great on both ends of the floor for the Wizards this season. Porter has improved his scoring averaging 14 ppg while shooting 53% from the field and 43% from 3. They’ve benefited from quality minutes from Trey Burke and Marcus Thornton. And second year guard Kelly Oubre has shown flashes of the potential the Wizards saw in the young 19 year old when they traded for him on draft night. The Wizards’ bench this season has been underwhelming but has improved over the last few weeks. The team has finally bought into Scott Brooks’ coaching methods and it’s paying dividends. After this Saturday's matchup against the 76ers in D.C. the Wizards have a stretch of 6 games in 9 days. If they can continue to play together and get the production from Wall and Beal, Washington is in good shape to stay in the thick of the playoff hunt.

Celtics Season Update
A little over a third of the season has passed and your Boston Celtics are finally healthy and shaping into one of the elite teams in the East. Since the return of All-Star big man Al Horford, the Celtics are knocking on the door to take over the number 2 seed in the East. The Celtics “Big Three” (Thomas, Bradley, and Horford) are averaging 28, 18, and 15.4 to combine for 61 points per contest. Brad Stevens is once again on pace to improve the teams record and possibly grab that number two seed in the East. Young guard Isaiah Thomas has moved himself out of the All-Star and into the Superstar spotlight. He has been putting up staggering numbers averaging 28 points and 6.1 assist per game. This has given the Celtics something they haven't had since Paul Pierce, that being a player that other teams had to plan for and someone who is in the talks for the League MVP.
With the trade deadline nearing, the C’s have the pieces to make any move they want with parts like Avery Bradley, Al Horford, and young standout Marcus Smart not to mention the potential first pick in this year’s upcoming draft of the century. It is not likely for them to part with these pieces unless they receive a superstar player. There are four players that I could see the Celtics selling out to get. All of them would require that number one pick and one or two of the for mentioned players. Those players being Jimmy Butler, Paul George, Demarcus Cousins, and my final player is one that the C’s would have to sell all out for that being Anthony Davis.
Last night the Celtics defeated the Washington Wizards 117-108. Moving them to 24-15 omniscience's the season. Isaiah Thomas dropped 38 points on the night and 20 of the points came in the fourth quarter. Several heated moments during the game including an almost post game scuffle between the two teams after the game.

Ball So Hard!(It's Hip-Hop)
The next chapter in the storied association between hip-hop and basketball has arrived.
In 2017, we are still watching the constantly developing relationship between the music genre of hip-hop and the sport of basketball. If you're a true hip-hop fan then you will always have your favorite emcee, top 10 and some are even able to narrow it down to a Top 5.
Many popular basketball players have either been the topic of rap songs or even released their own music, both industries regularly cross paths and do business together. One of the more recent collaborations I'm interested to see grow as a fan of the sport is the Big 3 which is a professional 3 on 3 summer league. The half court league will feature retired professionals, whom no longer compete in the NBA. Rapper, former member of the iconic rap group NWA, and West Coast pioneer Ice Cube is a co-owner.
‪The BIG3 is coming... Learn more in January.‬ Link in bio for more.

<p>Cube is partnering with Roger Mason who will be stepping down as the deputy executive director of the NBA Players Association. Hip-hop and basketball have come together again for what appears to be an interesting or at least entertaining business proposition. Roger Mason the Washington DC native is former player in the NBA, drafted 31st overall going in the 2nd round by the Chicago Bulls and retired from the league in 2014 finishing his career with the Miami Heat. Mason will be stepping away from his position with the NBA Players Association in order to serve as the President and Commissioner of the Big 3. His time serving with the NBAPA he has largely credited for leading the unions movement to provide tens of millions towards health care and increased benefits to elderly/retired players. Roger Mason stepping down form his executive director position comes timely with the conclusion of negotiations of the 7 year Collective Bargain Agreement. Mason's experience both on the court and in the offices will be useful towards the progression of the Big 3.<p>“Called up the homies and I’m askin y’all which park are y’all playing basketball?” <img src="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5512b73ae4b0767ae4f4f35f/t/5872e771579fb3564e1bbdeb/1483925399748/?format=original"/> <p>Followers of the popular genre use several stipulations to dispute what constitutes a Rap Artist to be considered Top 5 such as lyricism, longevity, influence, evolution, trendsetting and authenticity. Hip-hop is a narrative of the life(s) the artist(s) which is articulating the rhymes to the rhythm or melody of a beat. A hip-hop song has the power to be an audio report of the urban community, poverty stricken environments, the lifestyle of the minorities in America, and a representation of the ghetto. “It’s ironic I had the brew, she had the chronic the Lakers beat the Supersonics” these lyrics were made popular by the urban philosopher Ice Cube. <img src="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5512b73ae4b0767ae4f4f35f/t/5872e394725e25b23cd21213/1483924399593/?format=500w"/> <p>Currently the league consists of 8 teams that will have 5 players each, 3 starters and 2 bench players. As of now Stephen “Captain Jack” Jackson, Rashard Lewis, Jermaine O’Neal, Kenyon “K-Mart” Martin, and Jason “White Chocolate” Williams have shared their interest, while former Laker player Gary Payton is officially signed on as a coach. When asked about Big 3 Ice Cube had this to say “I thought of this concept as a fan who got sick of seeing his heroes retire and not play anymore,” Ice Cube said. “A lot of these guys can still play once they retire – just not the back-to-backs or four games in five nights. I started to look at three-on-three basketball and wondered, ‘Why isn’t this played on a pro level?’ It’s the most normal form of basketball. And from there it was like, ‘Yo, why don’t we make this happen?"<p>“Not only do we get a chance to see these guys keep playing, but we give guys who retired who still got some game – who don’t want to pick up a [microphone] on TV and who don’t want to go overseas to play,” he continued. “Some of these guys still want a stage to play on.”<p>The potential of the Big 3 is pretty promising, all of our favorite players of yesterday could once again become involved in a competitive nature with the roundball either as a coach or a player. Ice Cube and his business partner Jeff Kwanitetz have come together using their collective resources in order to deliver what has the makings be the most popular summer basketball league in the country.  <p>Various regions of America have been responsible for producing various sounds of hip-hop and when you tell the story of the West Coast you must include O’Shea Jackson also known as Ice Cube and his resume continues to grow. Former minority of the Brooklyn Nets Shawn "Jay-Z Carter rapped once "before the answer was a 3, I was down in Georgetown with a Hoya chick, lawyer chick." Can't predict it's next move but the influence continues to grow, it's Hip-Hop! <img src="http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5512b73ae4b0767ae4f4f35f/t/5872e7eb20099ec947d716bd/1483925507588/?format=500w"/>

Sumner's 28 points help Xavier edge Georgetown 81-76.
Written By: Isahq Rana
The stage was set on New Year's Eve. Two Big East heavyweights, The Georgetown Hoyas hosted The Musketeers of Xavier at the Verizon center early Saturday morning. This was the first meeting of the year for the two programs and the first conference game for each.
Xavier had little help and did not need much from Tevin Bluiett, the fifth leading scorer in the Big East who finished the game with just one point. In the absence of the big play from Bluiett, sophomore guard Edmond Sumner went to work against the Hoyas who had early foul trouble from key players. Using his quickness and excellent ball handling skills, Sumner was able to create and cause frustration against the Hoyas finishing the game with 17 free throw attempts connecting on 14. The Hoyas as a team only had 23 attempts.
For the Hoyas is was pretty much the same story offensive and defensive. LJ Peak was able to penetrate the zone of Xavier, get to the bucket with ease, finishing the game with 21 points. Although facing early foul trouble, Rodney Pryor finished the contest with 20 points. The two guards finished with 41 of the team's 76 points. Defensively Georgetown was not able to stop Xavier's guards or pretty much any guards this season. To be able to contend with other Big East teams Coach Thompson must demand more from his bigs.
What does this game mean for the Hoyas?
This game displayed where the program is in the 13th year under John Thompson III, the program has not dominated in a while. Similar to last season, the Hoyas showed signs of lack of competition and a will to win. The team lacks energy, enthusiasm, and swag with John Thompson Sr in his wooden chair and names such as Ewing and Mourning on the sideline. It seems as if this program can not let go of it's glory days.

Georgetown just too much for Coppin State. Win Big 91-44
The Georgetown Hoyas(3-4) hosted The Coppin State Eagles(0-8) at the Verizon Center on this past Wednesday night. It is the first time the two programs have met in their respected program’s history.
Georgetown wins big 91-44 against Coppin State.  The Hoyas were led by Graduate Senior Rodney Pryor(18ppg), who shot the ball with great confidence, finishing the game with 30 points on 10-13 shooting from the field, with 7-8 coming from three. The Hoyas got it done on the defensive end as well. The front court anchored by Senior center Bradley Hayes dominated defensively. The Hoyas limited the Eagles to only 44 points, a pedestrian 27.1 percent from the field while forcing 15 turnovers.
Senior guard Joshua Treadwell (10.8 ppg) led all Eagles with 17 points and shot an efficient 50 percent from the field and three. Treadwell will need help from his teammates as Coppin State travel to Clemson on December 4, 2016, searching for their first win.  The Hoyas must continue to find a formula for winning. With only 8 games into the season, Georgetown must find consistency, as Big East play looms. Up next, Elon travel to the Verizon Center on December 4, tip-off is set for 1:30 EST.  Fun Fact of the game: With this win over Coppin State, Georgetown remains perfect against MEAC teams, 55-0.

Celtics Making Serious Efforts to Return to a Dominant East Team?
The Boston Celtics are sixteen games into this young season with a 9-7 record. Their play has been better than the record they've put up so far. Guard Avery Bradly known for his defense has come out and shown that he can put the ball through the hoop averaging 17.9 pts per game. Isaiah Thomas has picked up where he left off last year proving to be a top ten scorer in the league at 26.1 pts per game. Al Horford has been sidelined by injury for a few games. Jaylen Brown seems to just improve every time he touches the floor. Although the season is young there are worries for this young squad. The biggest one beingif Al Horford can shake the injury bug. When healthy, Horford is a 20 & 10 guy and one of the premier big men in the league. With the emergence of Avery Bradley becoming a two-way guard and Isaiah Thomas becoming an elite scorer, Al Horford when healthy could make up a “poor mans” big three.
Then there are the rumors that seem to be involving two major names, Demarcus Cousins and Paul George. Although a trade for one of these players would undoubtedly put Boston on Clevelands map it's highly unlikely to happen for two reasons. The first reason is what we would have to give up and the second being that Boston can sign them once they become free agents. The Celtics are expected to make a big push for one of these two and make a case to be argued as a top contender.

Georgetown Stunned by Arkansas State, 78-72
By: Mike Monroe Jr
The Georgetown Hoyas (1-2) hosted Arkansas St (1-1) on Thursday evening looking to bounce back from a 76-75, heartbreak loss to Maryland on Tuesday. The Arkansas State Red Wolves were looking to keep their momentum coming off a 100-57 victory over Central Baptist on Monday (Nov. 14).
Arkansas State got off to a hot start, hitting 65% (17-26) of their shots in the first half. They were led by G Devin Carter who hit 7-9 of his shot attempts and finished the half with 19 points. G Donte Thomas, a hometown player who attended Ballou, finished the half with 8 points and dished out 5 assists. The Red Wolves were relentless on defense and were able to force turnovers that led to 6 points, while the Hoyas did not score any points off turnovers.
The Hoyas came out aggressive on both ends of the floor to start the 2nd half. F Isaac Copeland hit a floater inside the paint, followed by a layup by G Jagan Mosely. Arkansas St. was forced to call a timeout with 18:22 on the game clock. Hoyas connected on their first 6-12 from the field, but the Red Wolves still held on to a 15-point lead with 11:50 remaining in the game. The Red Wolves effectively used their much smaller and quicker lineup to get into the paint for reverse layups. Screen and rolls caused Hoya C Jessie Govan to pick up guards and left the paint open for easy finishes.
The Hoyas crawled their way back into the game mainly due to the strong 2nd half play of L.J Peak, once again, who scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half. With 1:33 left in the game, G Rodney Pryor hit a 3 to bring the rallying Hoyas within 4, followed by two clutch free throws from Peak to cut the lead to 2 points, 74-72. In the end, the Hoyas turned the ball over on an inbounds pass and Arkansas St. hit from the line to seal the deal and the Hoyas dropped another close one, 78-72. After the game Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson lll said, “We had an opponent that came in that played very well and we took too long to get going…we have to learn and grown.”
Devin Carter of the Red Wolves finished the game with 25 points. Donte Thomas finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
Georgetown is headed to Maui for the Jim Maui Invitational against Oregon on Nov. 21. The game will tip off at 4:30 p.m and will be shown live on ESPN2. They return home to take on Howard University on Nov. 27 at 1:30 PM.

GEORGETOWN HOYAS START THE SEASON WITH A BLOWOUT WIN
BY: ABAEL SOLOMON, November 16, 2016
The Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team opened the season at Verizon Center against University of South Carolina Upstate .  It was a good day for Saturday college basketball with the attendance of former Georgetown alumni. Also making an appearance was former Georgetown great John Thompson and Gheorge Muresan, the former Washington Bullet/Wizard whose son (George Muresan) is a walk-on for the Hoyas.
Georgetown looked to set the tempo early in the game with newcomer Rodney Pryor 6’5 grad student who previously played at Robert Morris. Rodney Pryor shot 13 for 16 from the field and 6 for 7 from 3-point land.  He almost tied the previous mark for most 3 pointers made in a game held by former Hoya Austin Freeman.
Georgetown controlled most of the game with up-tempo defense and sharp shooting from Pryor & L.J. Peak.
Final Score: Georgetown 105 – USC Upstate 60
Leading Scorer: Rodney Pryor with 32 points
Look for Rodney Pryor to be a huge part of the offense for Georgetown this season.
