one time i had a dream that tiktok users deemed “kid” as a slur and that you HAD to refer to them as minors otherwise you would get harassed and threatened with doxxing. you couldn’t say “when i was a kid” anymore for example you HAD to say “when i was a minor” instead

hi so i saw a conversation happening that i found really interesting about the lost boys and their dynamic, and i started to write a response... but then it got abominably long, so i decided to make my own post rather than hijack any of the threads going on haha. just want to be clear this isn't an attack on anyone! i'm just sharing my thoughts because i apparently have a lot of them, and perhaps some of the additional (important!) context for the movie and its creation might help someone recontextualize a little!
for context since i'm posting this solo: the threads i've seen are about the lost boys and writing them as brothers vs romantically, how vampire siring works, etc. obviously much of this comes down to headcanon, depending on whether you're into broader vampire lore (and all the diverse, varied ways vampires work in different media/universes, etc). in the lost boys specifically, we have very little direct explicit explanation because it's an hour and a half long movie (that did spawn more media to be fair, but speaking specifically about the original movie since we're talking about the original cast of characters). and ultimately, it was not created for the neurodivergent people (like me) who are still obsessing over it forty years later. so it's up to interpretation quite a lot, which is both an asset, and also naturally spawns some disagreement! but anywho. back to the point.
infodumping below! have at ye.
first of all, vampires have never worked as a biological concept in a direct way! you're connected to the vampire who turned/sired you, of course. but the sharing of blood is incredibly symbolic. it isn't a matter of "suddenly we're blood related now". (this isn't to say there aren't pieces of vamp media where it can't work that way, but speaking generally!)
i think people also need to remember - and for those who don't know/haven't considered this aspect - that the lost boys was made in the 80s in the midst of the aids crisis, and that the director (joel schumacher) was a gay man. like, this is important context when watching a queer film with heavy homoerotic subtext which is centered around young adults/teens, particularly a lot of young men, and the exchange and imbibing of bodily fluids, specifically blood, during a time where that was not only viewed as dirty but a death sentence. moreso, at the very least alex winter (who played marko, and came from a very heavily broadway background prior to tlb) has been incredibly vocal about not only being supportive of the queerness of the movie now, but back then as well! he got the vibes even at the time of filming!
this is a pretty clearly queer movie in a fantastic way, made during a time where it wasn't exactly an option to be overt about it the way/to the degree we can be today. hell, if i remember correctly i think star was originally supposed to be a boy. and though the dynamic would likely have been much different... even if they removed the direct romance, the subtext there ain't going away. like let's be serious for a moment.
that said, if you want to view the boys as having a more brotherly relationship? you're absolutely entitled to that! that's totally fine! but max as a fatherly figure with the boys never read to me as "they're now brothers". it's a friend group, he's just the supervisory adult figure. (and honestly whether the boys even viewed him as a father figure is HEAVILY debatable. this is also compounded if you view the boys not as recent vampires, but old ones.) but back to the point that i was making, which is that friend groups can be interpreted any number of ways. they're a blank slate to play with, and unfortunately it leads to a lot of meaningless fights in fandom simply because people interpret the dynamic differently. it's like how sometimes people will call certain relationships "sibling coded" and say therefore if you ship the characters it's incest, when they aren't even related and it's just the individual in question interpreting the dynamic that way. (which again, is fine! but it's personal opinion, not a cudgel to beat other fans with because they disagree with you!)
hell, i personally don't even mind (let alone hate) when people write the pack in context of having a more brotherly relationship at all! i think it can be cute as fuck. but in canon they are very clearly friends, not related, even by vampire terms.
sidenote: it does rub me the wrong way when people respond to poly!pack with significant ick factor, sometimes simply because a lot of the time it does unfortunately come from queerphobia. (to be clear, i don't think anyone in the recent conversation falls into this category, at least not that i've seen! but i've unfortunately seen it a fair few times in the past.) the lost boys fandom is pretty queer forward thankfully, so it's not a huge issue. but there's always going to be cishet fans of any media, and unfortunately that often still comes with a small subsection who are queerphobic. that said, a lot of the time they're also very young and simply haven't learned better yet (and moreso are often also young girls/women/fems, who already get shit on often enough, especially for engaging in fandom). so typically i just avoid interacting with it, simply because i can't be bothered. it's not worth the energy. as long as they stay out of my corner and are respectful if they show up in my metaphorical house to engage with my works, i don't particularly care enough.
in my personal experience, i understood upon watching the lost boys (which i was introduced to by my very cishet parents) at around ten-ish, give or take, that there was something happening between all the young men on screen. but i hadn't even really fully come to terms with the fact that i was queer, let alone trans and poly, so i didn't have the language to describe what i was seeing on screen or experiencing in my gay little noggin until i got older and had my "OH. so THAT'S why that movie cemented as a core memory for me." moment.
anywho, everyone consumes media through their own unique lens formed by their life experiences etc, and there's rarely wrong ways to consume media (and even then, i'm firmly of the belief that people be allowed to consume media "wrongly" because to assert otherwise is effectively censorship, but that's neither here nor there). as long as everyone's being respectful there's no issue. we can all coexist, we're all obsessed with the same blorbos, who cares? if something icks you out perhaps take a minute to consider why, but otherwise just curate your media consumption accordingly.
(but i do also want to be clear and reiterate that there really genuinely isn't any canonical onscreen "they're brothers" shit. they're canonically friends who care deeply about one another, and in what way is up to interpretation. my interpretation is they're really fucking gay, but that's just me. one of my favorite fic collections for tlb on ao3 is very brotherly dynamic centric, and i still think it's cute as hell. love. after all, why pick one when you can have both? it's like enjoying both "they all died" angst, and also fix it and fluff fics. both are good. but my works will always be for the poly!pack enjoyers, because we need fed too.)
anyways rip joel schumacher thank you for the gay vampires, i hope you enjoy my gayass fanfic wherever you are in the void (and additional thank you to alex winter for being cool as fuck. just to be clear he isn't dead, thank god. i just love that man and think he and marko are both sick as hell)

i am so goddamn sick of the cycle of ‘get interested in something’ ‘become OBSESSED to the point where it is the only thing u want to do / that brings joy’ ‘become overwhelmed by everything you are Not doing due to obsession’ ‘get over the interest only to be sad and bored’ rinse and repeat. it’s fucking exhausting. why can i not just like things. do things. have hobbies. without my brain having a meltdown!!! it’s ridiculous!

I have the urge to run a vtm one shot, where I ask the players to make the most silly pcs possible.
I'm taking like, a theater kid motormouth Nosferatu, a Lasombra with hyperempathy, a Tzimisce who became one solely because they couldn't afford hrt and this was deemed the cheaper option. Idk, just the most off the wall things you could think of, and then. Play the one shot.
Mostly bc I think I want to try DMing a bit before I run my larger game, but also I think it would just be fun.

Being a young adult is so strange. You enter a coffee shop. The 20 year old girl waiting behind you cried all night because she just came to a new city for university and she feels so alone. That 27 year old guy over there works a job he is overqualified for, he lives with his parents and wants to move out but doesn't know what to do about it. That one 24 year old dude already has a car, a house, and a job waiting for him once he graduates thanks to his dad's connections. The 26 year old barista couldn't complete his higher education because he has to work and take care of his family. The 28 year old girl sitting next to you has no friends to go out with so she is texting her mother. That couple (both 25 years old) are married and the girl is pregnant. The 29 year old writing something on her laptop has realized that she chose the wrong major so she is trying to start all over. We are not alone in this, but we are actually so alone. Do you feel me
