Trying to find out who did this gorgeous piece of DC/MK art-- it’s old but really beautiful.   It was passed along to me ages ago in a batch of fanart; I’ve never known who did it and there’s no signature I can see, and I’d like to know so I can credit ‘em because it directly inspired a scene in something I wrote.  Any ideas?  THANKS!

My top surgery was due to breast cancer rather than transition, but these are GREAT tips and I wish I had known 'em!  A few more:
If you're going to have drains (which you probably will), stock up on sleepwear with a pocket on each side.  Trust me on this; those drains have to go somewhere, and bathrobes are great.  You'll have to cut a hole in each just inside the pockets to slip the drains through, but you can sew them up after you've healed.
Do NOT use deodorant or antiperspirant while healing.  Just don't.
If you're really hurting, pack pillows around and against you.  This works with any kind of surgery; I don't know why, but having a slight, giving pressure against you on all sides really feels good and aids relaxation.
Don't wrap your bandages too tightly; since your nerves are going to get somewhat screwed up, you may not be able to feel an injury-- and tight bandages can rub.  I once had weeping blisters beneath my arms from crutches and couldn't feel them at all, didn't even know they were there for a day or so.
When you really hurt, sing.  Or recite something.  Or chant, whatever.  You'd be surprised what giving yourself something else to focus on can do to help pain pass..... and it *will* pass.  You just need to give it time.
Random things that make top surgery recovery easier
A few months before you get surgery, exercise a lot, especially in your core. If you do lots of crunches and/or situps, once you’ve lost a lot of mobility and strength it will be so much easier to sit up and stand up if your abdominal muscles are stronger.
Bendy straws! It makes drinking beverages so much easier.
Make sure stuff is in arms’ reach since you won’t be able to reach very far.
Stay ahead of your pain. Don’t wait until you hurt so much you can hardly move.
Medicines you are given often give you a dry mouth, so 1. keep lots of water handy 2. get some minty gum because that dry mouth will make it taste like something died in there. Also brush your teeth (duh.)
Get some stool softener pills. Any sort of narcotic pain killers (like Norco, Vicodin, etc.) will constipate the heck out of you, and milk of magnesia is gross af, just take pills to get the same effects.
Always wash your hands, it’ll reduce the risk of infection.
When positioning yourself, make sure your chest is in as little pain as possible, but also make sure you’re not going to make every other part of your body sore as a result. In trying to stop any pressure on my chest whatsoever, I twisted my back around and woke up with a really sore back.
If you do end up with muscle pains, heating pads are great. If your chest hurts, use cold to treat pain and decrease swelling but only for short periods and with lots of bandages on your chest.
Get some nice facial wipes because you won’t be able to shower for a week or longer. Also, the night before you get surgery (or whenever the last time you shower before then,) don’t condition your hair. It’s not as healthy, sure, but it’ll keep it from getting too greasy as you won’t be able to wash it for a while.
Cough drops or some sort of hard candy, also tea with honey is highly recommended, as you’ll probably have a sore throat from the breathing tube they give you under anesthesia.
If you want to take a non-narcotic pain killer, take tylenol, not an NSAID like advil, because NSAID pills can make bleeding worse. Also, don’t take multivitamins for the week before, as Vitamin E can worsen bleeding.
Even if you’ve got drains like I did, the first night you sleep, you should put down a towel to sleep on in case you leak from other places under the bandages or surgical vest. This is normal so long as you’re not leaking dark red blood, but then again why stain your sheets when you can avoid it?
Wear easy-to-move-in and easy-to-remove clothes: no jeans, no t-shirts, stick to button-downs and sweatpants or pajama pants.
Feel free to add more tips!
-L
One last thing, shave your armpits because tape WILL get caught in the hair and that’s quite unpleasant.

Endometriosis feels like being set on fire inside.  It's why I ended up with a full hysterectomy and believe me, it was a huge relief.
Endometriosis
Tumblr media
Endometriosis—the struggle is real.  Killer cramps are NOT normal.  Periods that last longer than 7 days are NOT normal. Heavy bleeding that soaks through a tampon every 2 hours is NOT normal; pain during sex is NOT normal. Bouts of diarrhea and vomiting that accompany every menstrual cycle are NOT normal. No, no, and no!  For many people, this reality is just endometriosis at work.
Sad truth: Many of us are taught to downplay these symptoms. Our pain is diminished by parents, siblings, friends and even health care professionals who convince us that everyone goes through this.
Maybe that is why, according to the Endometriosis Foundation of America, it takes 10 years on average to receive an accurate endometriosis diagnosis. That’s a decade, people! That’s 130 periods of agony, 912 days of someone asking you to take Advil and suck it up.  That…is not okay.
Endometriosis is pervasive.  It affects 1 in 20 Americans of reproductive age and an estimated 176 million people worldwide. It occurs when tissue similar to the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) is found outside the uterus on other parts of the body.
There are lots of symptoms that can vary among patients.  Pelvic pain is most common, as well as pain that coincides with menstruation.  Other symptoms include heavy cramps, long-lasting bleeding, nausea or vomiting, pain during sex and, unfortunately, infertility.  Some people may even experience symptoms throughout their entire cycle—a real drag.
In addition to these physical symptoms, endometriosis takes a toll on someone’s personal and professional life. Chronic pain can severely affect quality of life day-to-day; medical care can be extremely costly. Furthermore, absenteeism can alter relationships in the workplace and at home.
Despite the intense discomfort, many people do not realize they have endometriosis until they try to get pregnant. And because the disease tends to get progressively worse over time, approximately 30-40% of people who have endometriosis experience fertility challenges.
There is no simple diagnostic test for endometriosis—no blood, urine, or saliva testing can confirm the condition. The only way to verify endometriosis is to undergo a diagnostic laparoscopy with pathology confirmation of biopsy specimens.
On the bright side, many endometriosis symptoms— including infertility—can be addressed after diagnosis. The gold standard for endometriosis treatment is laparoscopic excision surgery. This involves a careful removal of the entire endometrial lesion from wherever it grows.
The first step to getting there is recognizing that your pain is not normal and seeking timely intervention. The earlier endometriosis is detected and treated, the better the results. Tracking your symptoms will make you better informed for your next doctor’s visit, and set you on a path to better (and less painful!) menstrual health.

I do this too, to a lesser extent; I have to relax and let myself pay attention to it, but certain sounds (especially music) form colors and patterns in my head.  I've blocked it out a lot-- it can really get distracting-- but it's there.  My dad did it too, though I think a lot more than I do.
Low pitches run to reds, browns and burgundies depending on what instrument they come from; the highest ones are blues shading up to whites and are thin, spiky lines (the lower pitches are rounded and flowing.)  I love percussion in particular-- it's like punctuation and can be in some amazing colors.
I always feel like, if I could just touch the colors and patterns, they'd have texture.  Wish I had this artist's talent for painting-- her work is amazing!
Artist Melissa S. McCracken’s synesthesia allows her to translate music into stunning abstract oil and acrylic paintings. Those who have synesthesia posses the ability to see certain sounds and words as colors because their sensory and cognitive pathways neurologically...

A Black Flamingo Stands in Cyprus
It’s not every day you see Earth’s (maybe) only black flamingo.
by Becca Cudmore
This black flamingo is one in several million—and perhaps, the only one in the world.
On April 8, it was spotted during a flamingo count along a salt lake at the Akrotiri environmental center on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. This same flamingo may have also been seen in Israel in 2014, when a 70-year-old man captured what could be the world’s “the one and only black flamingo” on camera, the photographer told the Monterey Herald.
Greater Flamingo flocks regularly move long distances, “so there’s a good chance that this is the same individual that was seen in Israel,” says Audubon’s field editor Kenn Kaufman…

PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST AND SIGN; this is sick and wrong beyond all reason.
LOS ANGELES — A man convicted of sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl will see 10 years in prison — down from at least 25 — after a judge decided the minimum mandatory sentence was too much, and should be considered “cruel and unusual punishment.” According to the Register, the 3-year-old girl wandered into a garage where Kevin Jonas Rojan-Nieto was playing video games. The man became sexually aroused and assaulted the girl, KTLA reports. The judge felt that the circumstances surrounding the incident merited a different sentence. Kelly continued with the Register:  “Mr. Rojano did not seek out or stalk (the victim). He was playing video games and she wandered into the garage. He inexplicably became sexually aroused but did not appear to consciously intend to harm (the victim) when he sexually assaulted her,” the newspaper reported.

My older brother's being treated for laryngeal cancer right now; you ONLY get that from smoking.  He's had two surgeries, narrowly missed having his entire larynx removed and may yet have to; that's your VOICEBOX, the thing you use to talk with; if he has it removed, he'll speak using an electronic vodor.  That is, of course, if he has enough left to speak with at all.
This is, of course, providing he survives.  And if he does, this kind of cancer (one of the most common kinds) has a reoccurrence rate of 2 to 3 years.  That means it may show up again in, oh, 2017 or 2018.
Don't. Smoke.
Please, never smoke. Never even start smoking, if you are lucky enough to possess a pair of untouched, perfectly pink lungs.
It plagues you. When you’re a smoker, being outside isn’t enjoying nature; it’s an opportunity to smoke. Driving isn’t an escape; it’s getting in your car and always traveling to the same destination: reaching for your pack. It’s a social crutch and a motivational handicap.
And once you quit, it doesn’t go away. I’ve been almost completely smoke free for five years now, one year longer than I was a smoker, and I still crave a cigarette. Every day, I still crave a cigarette.
You only look cool smoking in your early 20s. After that, everyone judges you for not quitting once you graduated college. I’m serious, don’t romanticize this harmful habit; it’s unhealthy, and dangerous, and easy to avoid.
