Anecdote time: so I was out with a friend the other night (yes, I leave my house sometimes for fun now, I've really been working on it — and I suddenly see why other people have no money, but that's a thought for another anecdote), and I walked them to their public transport destination before turning to walk the, like, three blocks to my home.
Within those three blocks a red-eyed bogan managed to locate and accost me. He didn't actually do anything, but he did interrogate me as to my relationship status and then try to convince me to "just hang out," to "make a thousand bucks in thirty minutes."
The PVP game in this city after dark is off the hook.
This further conclusion is a little beside the point, but I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that anyone wandering the city streets in thongs¹ at 10pm absolutely does not have a thousand bucks to spare.

the problem with liking ~cool~ fan favorite characters (itachi, minato) is that if you go into the wrong part of the fandom, you'll get people salivating over their feats and NOTHING ELSE and those same people will be like "oh, fangirls only like him because he's hot--"
no you fools!! i like them because of their feats AND because [ten page insane essay on their fucked up little personalities] and also because they are hot!!

I'm being so serious right now: there are people out there, just wandering around in fandom, who do genuinely think podfic is primarily an accessibility tool.
Podficcers get such a raw deal in fandom:
they have evergreen hosting issues (unless grandfathered in under the Paraka clause) that the OTW typically considers outside its infrastructural wheelhouse
they have to carefully ensure they have permission to actually make their works because their works contain the complete text of someone else's work
which means they have to go ASK or else hope someone has a blanket permission statement
which means they ALSO have to read fic writers' weird hostile non-consent statements when an "I do not permit people to make podfics of my works," could really have done the job
they get really low levels of engagement on their works and while that's rarely people's only reason for making something, most people do like engagement
they have to constantly educate other fans about how what they're making isn't glorified text to speech, but actually a performance in its own right
now, apparently, people think they're performing some kind of charitable function for accessibility (a take I've seen casually mentioned three times in the last few months)
And I still see people just floating around through fandom like: "wow I'm so glad the podficcers are. making fanfic accessible. even if I don't need to use podfics."
Nobody NEEDS to "use" podfics. You can run a fanfic through text to speech if you want that. Podficcers transform a fanfic through the power of both their performance and a whole bunch of [elements of mysterious sound-based expertise, here represented only by CHA-LA HEAD CHA-LA played backwards at 25% speed¹], which they have kindly recorded and packaged up neatly for you to listen to.
Like... Sir? What? They are ...making art? As a hobby?? Like the rest of us??? Yes????
Just like if it was fanart, you don't have to like other people's art but it's NOT "an accessibility tool I don't need to use." They are not just like a weird extra interface between you and the "accessible" version of a fanfic, okay? Accessibility is a really cool side benefit, but it's not the main purpose.
1. I'm not a podficcer, IDK what they're doing about the sounds. Other than kindly not pronouncing all my typos. Please.

It's just fascinating how much people want the creators who speak to you at your worst to be, like, not even good people, but nice people. Creators whose art makes you go "Oh, wow they really nailed my struggle with grief, anxiety, depression and badly repressed rage," are... not going to be nice people. On average.

Me watching someone's anxious borzoi vibrate faster than the speed of sound: thank god it's not more bad YA takes.
Update: my YouTube recommendations are now safely returned to their usual state of dumb stories about people's pets and cats yelling out the window, with only the occasional look in from BookTube. Phew.

I really like the upcoming change to the default comments setting for new works.
Due to an influx of abusive spam comments on April 21, 2024, we temporarily disabled all guest comments across the site. We have now re-enabled the ability to leave guest comments, but if you comment while not logged into an account, you may encounter a verification page that checks that you are not a bot. We are also working on other ways to help reduce spam, including a small change to the default comment settings on the work posting form that will be rolled out soon.

Oh my god I'm just realising I called the Ino & Hidan/Kakuzu fic 'working holiday' and the fic where Ichigo goes to the elemental nations 'The one where Ichigo takes a trans-dimensional working holiday' ..... even when I'm trying to name a fic like an adult.... this.

I think it's fine to say mushrooms are culinary vegetables if you want, actually.
Like yeah, they're the fruiting body of a fungus, but pumpkins are fruits and sweet potatoes are roots. They can all be culinary vegetables together. I'm not mad if someone says "eat your vegetables," and they mean mushrooms. It's fine.

In the 2000s, texts we had to study in highschool were things like A Minimum of Two, Looking for Alibrandi, The Whale Rider, inevitably one (1) Shakespeare play with every iota of joy sucked out of it, 1984, Go Ask Alice, Dispossessed: A Tale of modern Rural Australia... I think in very early highschool we got some stuff like Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, too. The film we did in VCE was Lantana, which I didn't mind, but which certainly doesn't break the deeply miserable mould of these texts.
I think it's probably possible to include young adult novels that aren't extremely tiring issues novels in our curriculum? And yet having glanced through the VCE picks this year, the best they're offering you is Pride and Prejudice. I guess at least that's, like, not straight-up miserable. But it's not necessarily super relatable to the 17 year old reader.
I don't know, it always seems to me like it would be hard to learn to read as a lifelong escape from the horrors of existence if we expect school to be the place where kids acquire that skill.

I want to procrastinate on the tasks of the day by writing tiny ficlets to amuse myself but I'm also so sleepy. I think putting off breakfast and coffee for 6 hours probably hasn't helped.
