A winter storm advisory came to fruition overnight, with 6” of snow falling in Estes Park (and all over Lexa). Got up at 4am to beat the storm coming from the east. Managed to drive down to Fort Collins through slushy snow without resorting to tire socks. Drove north to Laramie (infamy!), put gas in Lexa and Starbucks breakfast in us before heading west on I-80 to Park City. Saw a few more flurries but no further driving issues. Checked into our hotel for a long rest.

Drove back into Rocky Mountain NP to check out some other areas. Snow started falling heavily when we drove north, but stopped just as quickly. Continued on Trail Ridge Road as far as we were allowed, and got some pretty pictures of the Moraine Park and mountains in the distance. Headed down to Hidden Valley, but no kids were sledding due to lack of snow. Moved on to the Alluvial Fan, where a failed dam at Lawn Lake in 1982 brought down a wall of water and huge boulders, creating the fan shaped pattern where the canyon flattened out. The flood reached all the way to Lake Estes in Estes Park, several miles away. Saw a large school of fly fishermen at the picnic area. Next we tried wildlife viewing at Sheep Lakes, but the only thing we picked up with our telephoto lens was a white rock masquerading as a bighorn sheep. Drove out of the park to the northeastern entrance, and had good beer and pizza before heading back to Swiftcurrent Lodge.

Headed into Rocky Mountain NP after breakfast, first visiting Sprague Lake at 8688’ elevation. The nice stroll around the lake featured a large cow moose standing in the shallows paying no attention to the large number of people who passed her. Got very nice pictures of the glacial basin from that vantage point. We then headed to the top of the glacial valley, to Bear Lake at 9475’ elevation. The lake was completely snow covered, so Edward hiked around the lake solo. Crampons were necessary, and photos of the ice-covered lake were beautiful. After that we returned to clean up a bit before heading to the historic Stanley Hotel for a drink. Hotel was pretty but service at the Whiskey Bar was sub par. Oh well, you can’t win them all!

Wed 4/24
After breakfast we headed to Costco for gas & supplies for our Estes Park adventure. Then we headed to Red Rocks, a spectacular natural amphitheater hewn out of the rocks west of Denver. Its superb natural acoustics were first used for concert performances in 1910, and the continued work in the 1930s during the New Deal led to inaugural concerts in 1941 and performances ever since. It’s a spectacular sight, with 2 gigantic rocks on either side and with views of downtown Denver in the distance. After this we headed to the Golden Triangle area of Denver, where there are many museums, a US Mint, and interesting /amusing sculptures. Enjoyed a beer and olives at a hip cafe, and then drove to Estes Park, checked into the Swiftcurrent Lodge and enjoyed the view on the Big Thompson River before dinner and rest.

Tue 4/23
Drove 600+ miles from KC to Littleton, CO (near Denver). Alternated drivers several times, which made the trip a bit easier. Most of the time roads were good and speed was high, met traffic only at the end in the vicinity of Denver. Checked into our hotel to rest before tomorrow’s visit in the Denver/Boulder area.

After taking Lexa to the local KC dealer for a 10K service appointment, we headed into town, first visiting the gorgeous Nelson-Atkins art museum. It has a top-notch European collection (including some great Impressionist paintings), and is completely free! After our short visit, we enjoyed the adjoining sculpture garden, which included giant shuttlecocks and a Rodin “Thinker”. Next we drove to historic Union Station for a quick look around. After that we went to the Crossroads Art District where we hunted for fun murals on various streets and had nice cocktails and small plates at Tom’s Town Distilling, a very cool bar. They make vodka, bourbon and gin on site, and we bought a bottle of good gin to take along with us on our travel westward. Next we walked to the nearby Power and Light District to check out Art Deco edifices like the Power and Light Building and the Hotel President. After a few miles of walking we headed back to our hotel to rest before the long drive to Denver on Tuesday.

Checked out of our St Louis AirBnB and immediately headed to the St Louis Science Center & McDonnell Planetarium. What a great place!! The full size NASA model of the Perseverance rover was amazing- truly the size of a VW Love Bus! And the model of the Ingenuity helicopter was also very cool, sleek silver color. Bonus displays of original Mercury and Gemini capsules and Apollo information were also great! We saw a nice planetarium show, with a docent describing the major constellations. Sadly we didn’t get to the adjoining Science Center, as we had to drive to Kansas City in the afternoon. The surrounding area, including parklands, zoo, greenhouse, etc deserve a return visit for sure! After checking into our KC hotel, we had a fantastic steak dinner at the Saltgrass Restaurant.

After breakfast of leftover BBQ, we drove 4 hours to St Louis and checked into our AirBnB. Then we immediately drove to the Gateway Arch NP. Took lots of photos of the Arch with the sun setting in the background, a really awe-inspiring sight! Walked down to the Mississippi River where there were riverboats and more Cinderella horse carriages. Had dinner at the Brewhouse sports bar before heading back for rest.
