I think it's because Senshi is incredibly forthcoming about the general topic of discussion (dungeon cuisine and ecosystems). He's a good teacher, and he's eager to share what he's learned in a way that seems relatively uncommon in the setting. The second he sees people even remotely receptive to learning from him, he's all in.

But that means there's a really marked gap when it comes to stuff he doesn't volunteer that Team Poor Socialization Skills has a hard time navigating. He goes from "[extended lecture on thing] [honest questions about others' experience with thing] [gratitude for collaboration over thing]! :)" to "[brief factual answer about thing]", and they're all like "Huh. Hmm. Um." when they notice.

Chilchuck is cagey, gun-shy about giving too many details, and protective of trade secrets in general. There's no demarcation between how he handles arguments over strategy in the dungeons and questions about his personal life.

For Marcille and Laios to work with him successfully, they have to have developed some coping mechanisms for that, which they have. They're not socially adept enough to recognize that there's an etiquette difference in harassing him about the work-related conclusions he's come to and decisions he's advocating for and harassing him about his personal life. His behavior is the same in both situations, so there's no external signal to stand in for the missing internal signal.

I really like how Chilchuck made a huge deal about keeping his private life separate from his work life but objectively he’s not even that good at it. They’d ask how old he is and he gets overly cagey and defensive like 😡😤🤐 “THATS TOO PERSONAL!” which just makes everyone more curious. Like he’s practically waving around the fact that he’s keeping secrets.

meanwhile Senshi is ACTUALLY mysterious, and so casual about it. He barely shares anything unless asked, but every time he does, you realize there’s so much more he’s definitely not telling. He doesn’t seem bothered by most questions, but it almost seems invasive to try to pry for more. What has this man seen. Where has he been. What has he done. There are so many decade-long gaps in his timeline. It’s not even like he’s trying to hide anything (except, y’know, the griffin thing) he just doesn’t talk about himself much.

Look, I agree that trying to sell folks on original fiction by citing fanfic tropes is asinine, but at least "oh, it's got enemies to lovers!" tells you something substantive about the plot and characters. I once had somebody try to convince me to read a work of original fiction by telling me that it has a romance with a height gap.

#I guess that's a very important thing to know if you're hornt up about it and so's the book #but uh #otherwise that's about as helpful as 'they both drive cars'

I feel like this is the opposite of 'Nobody cared that much about Laios,' or maybe diagonal to it.

Like, the red dragon wiped the floor with them in no small part because they'd reached a hard limit to their ability to survive the dungeon. They'd gone as deep as they could without beginning to suffer from the supply issue, and then suddenly they were in the death zone in spite of being otherwise the most prepared they could possibly be.

Falin teleporting them all out and leaving a shitload of their gear behind meant that going back in that quick to do the same thing was basically suicide--they were even less prepared than they were when one of them got eaten.

Critically, in Laios's imagined alternative history, no one but Falin is willing to go back in to save him, but no one stops Falin from going back into incredible danger by herself, either. When Laios voices his plan to go back by himself after Marcelle and Chilchuck decide to restock first, neither of them are willing to let him do it alone--he gets "But that's insane!" and "Are you suicidal?"

And that's before Senshi gives them any real hope of success with his hypothesizing about red dragon digestive systems.

They're running a big risk because they care about Falin, yes, but they explicitly (and immediately) shelve their more sensible plan in order to keep Laios from doing something intensely stupid and dangerous without backup.
