Well, she had a point there and honestly he did recognise that he was being difficult. Not accepting charity and then refusing to do anything that might constitute earning what she was offering.
It seemed as if she cared little for how difficult he was being anyway (which was probably for the best) but his ears lowered suddenly on being the focus of her attention once more.
âIf youâre gonna insist on this, why donâtcha actually get me to do something I can do? I can just steal the materials. Anâ if the thought of it hurts your soft little heart, yâ should remind yourself that the nobles have more than they need and every one of âem probably deserves it anyway.â
âAnd if you get caught youâll be in trouble. Itâs honestly just a lot faster to gather it myself. Especially since I gotta spin the yarn personally if I want something decent, you know? Most of the stuff for sale isnât worth the effort.â
Half of what the market sold just didnât meet her standards, really. Much more cost efficient to make it herself and get something good at the start than have to buy multiple materials and hope they worked. âSheep shearingâs easy. All you gotta do is pull a handful off, it comes right off. Karakuls are weird like that.â

Zack would just shrug at her question.Â
â That depends. The ones closer to the slums are usually the weaker ones. Theyâre kinda just pests to the people who live down there, but if you want stronger monsters, then weâll have to go to the outskirts. âÂ
Maybe as far as past Midgarâs perimeter, too; but thatâd be their last option. In Zackâs experience, the far reaches of the slum outlands had creatures just a strong as anything the wastelands beyond that could throw at them â except maybe wild, roaming Behemoths.Â
â You think tracking down a Rust Drake would be enough for you? â
She had no idea what a Rust Drake was, but it sounded like a type of dragon so she figured itâd probably work. If not, theyâd find something else. There had to be something close to her level somewhere. âLetâs go for the drake thing, if the other monsters are just pests then they wonât do anything for the maeria process at all.â
âIf the drake doesnât work then we can go further to find something.â Hopefully itâd work, though. Nothing here could probably compete with some of the things sheâd fought in Ultima Thule and beyond, but that was fine. Those hadnât exactly been normal fights. Tapping her chin thoughtfully, she glanced around.
âMaybe want a space where no one will mind if I blow up some stuff, yeah?â

âWait! How is that rude! You didnât say anything about me being forbidden to play it without you!â Ardbert crossed his arms and practically pouted in her direction. âI was just trying to learn. We didnât have that game on the First.â He took his deserved swats washout much complaint though and pulled her closer. âWow, here I thought youâd miss having me rattle around up there all the time. My poor heart.â
âI didnât say you were forbidden, just that it was super rude to play without me.â She gave him another light swat, huffing a laugh. âIt was alright but I like you better out here. Where I can sit on you when youâre being ridiculous. Like so.â
She shoved him into a chair and sat on him. âSee?â

For Hestia: Her energy. The way she drew people in. At first it was a bit intimidating, especially given he had been newly inducted into his office as Elidibus. Yet as time wore on that intimidation faded away.
For Lumi: Admittedly the colour of her soul. It held a glimmer of a former life, and itâs partially why he stayed despite his misgivings. Over time though it was not the colour of her soul, but it was her determination, and the way she carried herself.
Does he want a kiss.

He hadnât slept very well, though it was easily masked by the smile he gave and the lie that fell from his lips, âI did, though not for long. I had⌠the strangest dream.â It had been a dream, or as close to one. A hand came up to grasp Hestiaâs, eyes closing as he leaned into her touch. For a moment, Ophiuchus thought he could chase the worries away. That it wasnât what he believed, that. That.
But no, he could sense it now. The soul sight had returned, stronger than before. Hestiaâs soul didnât look right, and he didnât know why. Ophiuchusâ head moved, pressing a kiss âgainst her palm. âIâm not overly hungry, but I will eat something yes.â
What were they doing? He wanted to ask, What were they doing, pretending to hide the truth from him? Ophiuchus had sensed his prior livesâ deaths. They had been painful, and they had been taken far too soon. The one whoâs home was of the tree. The sun as their enemy. Ware the sun, for death and destruction follow in her wake. Ware the sun, for she will devour whatâs left of the moon.
These thoughts Ophiuchus didnât give voice to, instead pulling away a little so that he could try and stand up. âWhere are we, now that I think on it. It feels as though weâve been under the ocean or a damp place.â Which was unlikely â yes?
âAh, you noticed.â Hestia helped him up, catching his hands to keep him on his feet. âWeâre in Amaurotâwhatâs left of it.â She a grimaced slightly, taking a half step back to pull him along, and a little conveniently, away from the window on the other wall.
âIt is under the ocean, yes. It... sank, I suppose is one way to put it. Or perhaps shifted slightly when the world was sundered? Iâm not entirely sure; I just know that itâs at the bottom of the Tempest on the First now.â Sheâd make him something simple and easy to eat. Sandwiches, maybe or a salad. Something light.
âI was planning to tell you about it once you woke up anyway. The city itself is... not as you remember it. Not usually. But Emet-Selch placed an illusion over it sometime in the last couple centuries.â She wrinkled her nose at him for a moment, trying to find the right way to soften the coming upset once he saw for himself. âHe missed the city, so he recreated it. That... includes the people. Sort of.â

Azem looked at her sketch with a dismissive look. Close, but it wasnât what he saw. âThis is adorable on its own, but the ones Iâve found had little fangs. Their paws are soft and tender you could make a habit of pinching it on repeat and not tire of it. Want more, even!â He borrowed the pencil only to add more⌠cute whiskers.
Hestia perked, looking closer. âOooh, I see what you mean!â Yes, she remembered these now. Theyâd be so cute sheâd been inspired to make one of her own, just much more round in appearance.
âWe should fill Amaurot with them, I think people would appreciate that.â

Frustration was good too? Wasnât it? Vesta shook her head, refusing to acknowledge sheâd been doing it all wrong, but once a hand was extended with an offer of help, she pouted slightly in awareness that maybe she could, after all, use some of that help. ââŚAlright,â she sighed, defeated. Hand reached out for the otherâs, but pulled back just as they were to connect. Glancing up she briefly felt suspicion surge within her. âB-but⌠Who are you?â
âDonât worry, youâll be reading in no timeâah! Right. Hestia.â She hadnât even introduced herself, had she? Oops. âIâm just visiting, honestly but you looked kinda frustrated, so.â Hopefully no one minded if she commandeered some of those books sheâd seen on various shelves in multiple buildings. Some of them should be easy learning books.
At worst sheâd pop back to Amaurot and find a few.
