From the English Concert on YouTube: “Handel - The Philanthropist,” a concert featuring Dame Sarah Connolly, Sophie Bevan, Soraya Mafi, and James Way singing selections from Solomon and Handel’s “Foundling Anthem.”
This is the first—a free teaser concert—in a livestreamed series being billed as “Britain’s Orpheus.” If you enjoy it, consider buying tickets to the other concerts, and/or making a donation to the orchestra’s Musicians’ Fund.

Ah, excellent: the ENO Mozart Requiem makes a total of five gigs—that I know of yet—for my favorite mezzo this fall.
(I got an ENO Friends email saying “if government restrictions mean a socially distanced audience are not able to watch the performance, we will livestream this concert.” It’s not clear yet whether ENO will offer a livestream if they are able to have a live audience in the house.)

Connolly Online: A List of Upcoming Livestreams
I am glad to observe that the summer of (mostly) reruns is giving way to a remarkably well-populated fall schedule of LIVE, and globally livestreamed, performances by my favorite mezzo. So far, I’ve been able to add four livestreams to my unofficial list of Dame Sarah Connolly’s upcoming performances.
Here’s a rundown of the opportunities to catch Dame Sarah online between now and the end of the year:
Recital with Malcolm Martineau at Wigmore Hall, September 16, 2020. Free livestream + limited in-person audience. Songs by Poulenc, Roussel, Mahler, and Bridge, capped by a pair of songs newly written by Bob Chilcott for Dame Sarah. The recital, like all the others in Wigmore Hall’s autumn 2020 season, will be streamed for free on their livestreaming site. It appears that you can also use this YouTube link. I expect that the event will be archived in the Wigmore’s online video library for later viewing.
Handel, Solomon (title role) and Foundling Anthem with the English Concert, October 1, 2020. Free livestream; donations solicited. Also starring Sophie Bevan, Soraya Mafi, and James Way; conducted by Harry Bickett. Note that although the stream is free to view, you must request a ticket for £0.00. I haven’t been able to find any information about how long (if at all) video of the concert will remain available following the livestream.
Recital with Eugene Asti at the Oxford Lieder Festival, October 10, 2020. Livestream tickets £12 (£5 for under-35s). Schumann’s Fraunliebe und -leben and Mahler’s Rückert-lieder bookend an assortment of songs by Haydn, Arne, Bush, Quilter, Howells, and Britten. The livestream ticket includes access to a post-performance Q&A session with the artists. Video will remain available until November 1.
“Pappano & Friends” chamber concert at the Barbican, London, November 1, 2020. Livestream tickets £12.50 + limited in-person audience. With Ian Bostridge, the Carducci Quartet, and Antonio Pappano. Ralph Vaughn Williams’ song cycle On Wenlock Edge is followed by an arrangement of Ernest Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer. Video will remain available for 48 hours.

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: Galou, Graham, Genaux, Gerhaher, and Basso
Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.
Delphine Galou sings a handful of baroque works as part of a concert with the Accademia Bizantina. Video stream from Bayreuth Baroque, Tuesday, September 8.
Susan Graham sings the title role (!) in a 2006 live recording of L’incoronazione di Poppea from the Houston Grand Opera; Frederica von Stade sings Ottavia. The role of Nerone, I regret to report, is assigned to a tenor. Archival broadcast Saturday, September 12 on HPM Classical.
Vivica Genaux sings a few Hasse arias as part of a concert with the Lauten Compagney. Video stream from Bayreuth Baroque, Saturday, September 12.
Christian Gerhaher and his regular collaborator Gerold Huber open the Wigmore Hall’s autumn season of socially distanced and video livestreamed performances with a recital of works by Schubert and Berg. Livestream from Wigmore Hall, Sunday, September 13.
Romina Basso and the ensemble Latinitas Nostra perform a concert of baroque works (including one by Barbara Strozzi). Video stream from Bayreuth Baroque, Sunday, September 13.

Mostly Mezzo Mondays: Graham and Genaux (x2)
Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.
Susan Graham sings the title role in a 2002 archival recording of Handel’s Ariodante at the Houston Grand Opera. Her co-stars include Alexandra Coku, Sally Burgess, and Christine Brandes. This is a radio broadcast, but the internet can supply you with some visuals for the well-traveled David Alden production. Christopher Hogwood conducts. Saturday, September 5 on HPM Classical.
Vivica Genaux sings a selection of Italian baroque arias with the Orchestra of the Antipodes, conducted by Erin Helyard. Recorded live in 2018; rebroadcast Sunday, September 6 on ABC Classic. (Note that the midday Australian broadcast time will fall in the wee hours in Europe and on the evening of the 5th in the Americas.)
Vivica Genaux sings in a performance of Hasse’s Artaserse, also recorded live in 2018 with the Orchestra of the Antipodes and scheduled for re-broadcast on the same day. Genaux’s co-stars are David Hansen, Carlo Vistoli, Emily Edmonds, Andrew Gooodwin, and Russell Harcourt. Erin Helyard conducts. Re-broadcast Sunday, September 6 on ABC Classic. (The evening timing of this broadcast in Australia places it in the morning for European listeners and in the middle of the night for those in the Americas.)

I’ve been mostly sitting out the pandemic-era opera streaming boom when my favorite mezzo isn’t involved, but some of these offerings from Bayreuth Baroque are catching my eye.

This interview is so good.
Edward Seckerson is quite knowledgeable about music and the classical music business, plus he’s a deft interviewer. Dame Sarah, who clearly knows Seckerson outside this interview and seems very comfortable talking with him from the get-go, responds to that knowledgeability with deeper and more detailed answers than usual. My favorite part of the interview is in the first half, when the two talk at length about Das Lied von der Erde; Sarah reveals a lot about what goes through her mind as she prepares and performs the piece. I found it fascinating.
