with every second he spends by the pond, jiwon understands with increasing clarity why vesper visits it so often. these waters house a certain peace not found elsewhere on the castle grounds, especially at night, when the moonlight dances so brilliantly on the water’s surface. the koi fish are adorable, too, far more pleasant company than most of the people still in the castle. whereas all those royals and associated nobles demand only the highest luxuries, all these fish require is food. adding company and entertainment would only be spoiling them, and jiwon is certain vesper does just that.
out of curiosity, the prince swipes some of the snacks his head knight has been feeding the fish. however, he makes the mistake of keeping the food cupped in his palm as he lowers a hand just below the water. in less than a second, a horde of koi fish come darting for his hand, all eager for a late night treat. even after no food remains, they continue to nip and suckle at his fingers as if more would reappear. it all happens so fast, but jiwon jerks his hand out of the pond with a shriek of excitement. a few fish chase after him, mouthing at the surface of the water, but jiwon has fallen back to sit cross-legged and out of reach.
hands wet with water from the pond, boots mottled with grass and dew, suit ruffled from spending so long crouched by the edge of the pond. it’s all decidedly not very princely. if he were with his etiquette instructor, he’d be marked zero points for the day and find himself sat in the library all afternoon re-reading manuscripts of cultural customs. (perhaps it wouldn’t be so terrible, though, considering vesper would still be by his side even then.) rather than fret over manners and proper posture, jiwon basks in what little excursions like these make him feel. chest light, smiles wide and easy, laughter generous. if only one of these suitors could do the same, perhaps the prince wouldn’t have to run away so often.
it’s at this point that vesper speaks once more. somehow, the knight’s words are both just what jiwon wants to hear and not. and how he wishes the hand on his shoulder would have landed just a bit lower, a bit firmer. these thoughts, too, are terribly unbecoming of a crown prince. such notions should remain reserved for the person he will one day wed, and it’s both terrifying and comforting how easily they come when it concerns vesper. “i suppose i’ll continue searching then,” jiwon decides quietly with a tiny smile, never breaking eye contact with his head knight. “i won’t settle for just anyone.”
“your highness!”
startled by the voice of another knight, somewhere across the gardens, jiwon reaches out and shyly takes hold of the lapel of vesper’s suit, eyes begging: no, not yet. just a moment more, please.
when jiwon takes the snacks that vesper feeds to the koi fish, he doesn’t protest nor say anything. not because jiwon is the prince but really, he doesn’t mind it. he even adores how the fish come flocking once jiwon brings his hand into the water, a laugh emitting through the knight’s lip. “your highness.. you shouldn’t—” but it was too late and the shriek that emits from the other only causes more laughter to fall from his lips.
adorable, truly. vesper thinks.
he hadn’t been quick enough to capture the prince before he had stumbled back upon the koi fish still looking for food, but he crouches down as he fixes up the prince’s hair, snickering as he gazes at the future king. one knee on the platform, while he rests his forearm on his other knee. he holds his hand out for the prince to take only to snap his head towards the direction of another knight calling out for Your Highness. he turns and he sees that look in jiwon’s eyes.
he’ll be reprimanded for this, not having fetched the future king in a timely manner to return to the ball they had planned for him but vesper doesn’t think much of it. he brings his forefinger to his lips before resting his hand on top of the prince’s head. a silent gesture that allows the prince to know to keep quiet as he diverts the knight. he then jogs up enough for the other knight to hear him.
“check the corridors, he is not here. but i will keep searching.”
the knight is quiet before yelling out a “yes sir!” before he hears the other jogging away, the footsteps fading as the distance grows. once silent, he sighs and walks back to where he left jiwon. his head turns but this time it’s to music that plays at the ball. he hums as he sways to the music before he brings his hand out. he gazes at jiwon, perhaps he really is too bold, but he wouldn’t allow this moment to be wasted and so he brings his other hand behind his back, much like how he’s watched the classes.
“prince jiwon, may i have this dance before i return to your search?” regrettably so. he adds in his head. “please don’t settle for anything less.” and it is at that time that vesper wishes so badly that things would be different. but of course, it is all but wishful thinking. so he shall be selfish for this moment, should jiwon take his hand in his and dance with him.
vesper will deal with the consequences the following day. ready to do so.

she knew about the rumours and less-than-friendly comments people would leave under jiwon’s posts, but she wasn’t his manager for nothing. this far into the singer’s career, she knew all the right steps, contacts, and terms to have comments removed and accounts reported. ironically, hiding the rumours about vesper and his co-actress from jiwon proved more difficult, but it was still possible. well-timed distractions, slips of the finger to change the channel. streamline his schedule to minimise any chance of him scrolling through his socials out of boredom. sometimes, the manager wondered why jiwon had to befriend one of the nation’s most renowned actors. her stress would drop remarkably if he had gotten close to a rookie actor or even another singer. but no, it had to be vesper kim.
having worked with jiwon since his debut, she considers their bond closer to that of siblings than manager and artist. in the process, she’s taken up more responsibilities than outlined by their contract, but ensuring jiwon’s safety will always remain her priority. so she asks, only to get answers from vesper firsthand. not from the actor’s, not from fans, not from the media. all things considered, his word isn’t  the only one that will matter while handling this fiasco, but it certainly matters most. no, comes vesper’s firm answer, and she trusts him, settling the matter with an okay to let the two talk between themselves.
sat on the edge of the bed, jiwon continues babbling nonsensically. hardly anything makes sense to him anymore, and the words which tumble out clumsily reflect just that. shoes still on his feet; face bare from the 12-hour flight. every hiccup and sniffle likens him increasingly to a months-old puppy whining because it isn’t allowed on the bed. he certainly feels just as small, just as helpless. vesper’s presence should bring him comfort, and it does, but he’s just so embarrassed to be seen this way. like an infant who doesn’t know how to self-soothe. like a fawn separated from the herd, stumbling through the forest in the dark.
deep breaths, vesper tells him gently, encouragingly. as always, he’s only doing his best to help, but jiwon feels like he’s floating further from his body each second. every blink sends tears down his cheeks, just for more to blur his vision again. soon, his words are lost for whimpers, muffled against vesper’s coat when he’s pulled into his arms. he catches bits and pieces of his manager answering vesper: i was in front of him, didn’t see much, already on the ground, too many people. the only grace saving him from reliving the incident is the warmth of vesper’s embrace, the soothing rumble of his voice.
jiwon is a mess, a wreck. he’s never fallen apart this badly in front of vesper, and yet… the actor’s words ground him, tether his thoughts back to his body. he doesn’t feel all there yet, but he finds enough control to wrap his own arms around vesper, to nod and reply, “okay. i’ll go if.. if you come with me. i’m sorry, please, don’t go.”
a sigh emits through the actor’s lips. he listens to what the manager manages to tell him, all while doing his best to soothe jiwon. it tugs at his heartstrings and only the worst runs through his mind and he so badly wishes jiwon didn’t have to deal with these things. he’s finally find someone who knows him genuinely, not use him for fame, use him for his looks and he likes. he knows good and well that jiwon has a kind, pure heart and wouldn’t do such things to anyone. still, vesper can’t help but to wish that jiwon didn’t have to deal with the things that come with knowing a rookie actor like himself. so he brings his fingers to run through jiwon’s locks, gently scratching at his scalp before looking towards the manager.
“i know you tried to cover them, i’m sure.. jiwon doesn’t eve know.” he speaks quietly, though he knows jiwon will hear. there’s really no point in hiding these rumors. “i had told jiwon that such rumors would rise because of how my image is towards manage.” he scrunches is nose in distaste at that. one wrong move with the wrong person and you wake up to news that you were advancing towards a female at a club, or a male who lost his balance to land directly into vesper’s arms. it’s like he was a damn magnet for these things and that managed to bring vesper’s arms to wrap more around jiwon. as if any minute he’ll tell vesper to get the hell away from him. he didn’t think that thought would sting badly.
he continues coaxing the singer, humming soft tunes before he nods his head. “don’t worry, jiwon.. i won’t leave. i promise.”
vesper’s phone insistently vibrates in his pocket, so he shoots a quick text to his manager. ‘won’t be back until later, please cancel all schedules, we’ll pick things up in the morning.’ there is guilt tugging at his chest as he picks jiwon up and into his arms. there’s no way he’d allow the other to walk. he gives one more look to jiwon’s manager and shakes his head. “if you guys want him to see the doctor, you’ll have to leave him to me. i know someone that will be able to tend to whatever injuries he may have and yes, i will update you as soon as the doctor is done.” with that vesper grabs his coat and drapes it over jiwon, the door opening for him and returns to his car.
he looks around out of habit, though no one knows of his car and he’s covered from mask to sunglasses and a hat to hide his hair. enshrouded by the public eyes save for those that merely look past them. he opens the door and eases jiwon into the seat and clicks the seatbelt as he strides back over to his side and starts the car, driving off to the direction to his private doctor and holds out his phone already having been connected to the vehicle’s bluetooth.
“if you’d like.. you can choose any song.”

the blue phone pings like a siren in the silence of the motel parking lot. a text notification, and jiwon’s manager sighs only partly from relief. the rest is a nauseating cocktail of anger, frustration, worry… on and on the list could go, but right now she has to remain professional. she doesn’t respond to the text, knowing it likely won’t even be read with the actor already on the way. instead, she takes a moment to pace the narrow space outside the door to the room she booked for jiwon. breathe in, and out. in, and out. on the sixth breath, the red phone buzzes, followed by the black one not even a second later. back to work then.
it takes vesper about as long as expected to come knocking on the door. after the incident at the airport, jiwon’s safety came first, but his flat in apgujeong was too far away. hotels couldn’t always be trusted—too many ears and just as many eyes, loose lips hungry for gossip. this tiny town of maybe ten streets and a conclave more than a proper neighbourhood would do fine for now. once the knock comes, jiwon’s manager opens the door, swings it out wide enough for vesper to come in, greetings foregone. just as quickly, she shuts the door and fastens every lock, casting a worried glance towards the pair.
jiwon doesn’t hear the knock, nor the click of the door swinging open and shut. hands are still clamped like a vice over his ears, eyes shut and breaths shaky. so many people, all crowding around him faster than security could push back. teeth gnashing, claws primed. on occasions like these, he would keep his head down and follow security to the van parked at the curb. camera flashes going off a mile a minute, fans screaming for a nod, hands pushing gifts into his own. he’s learned to walk through the chaos with all the grace of a seasoned artist, but today… today was different.
like a moth to flames, jiwon’s ears instinctively tuned in to the voices carrying vesper’s name. he doesn’t need you. leave him alone. quit using him for fame. honestly, he isn’t sure if he heard them correctly, but the tone (sharp, venomous) was more than clear. it was in that moment of distraction that he felt the push, too quick to tell if they came from hands or just a wave of the crowd, but before jiwon knew it, he was on the ground. and the voices just got louder, screaming down at him like butcher’s knives, and—
the one voice he wants, needs, to hear reaches his ears through the white noise, and jiwon’s eyes snap open. in them, a myriad of emotions flash in quick succession. surprise, relief, safety, confusion, hurt. that last one, he directs at his manager with heavy tears on his lashes and face flushed with something between embarrassment and anger. “i told you not to call him!” jiwon shouts, louder than he has ever heard himself. “i said no!”
“i know, and i’m sorry,” his manager responds, nowhere near as loud but a hundred times firmer than jiwon’s trembling. “but you’re not fine, and he’s the only one you’ll listen to. you still have to see a doctor, for god’s sake.”
red with shame, jiwon returns his gaze to vesper, who is more of a silhouette with the veil of tears in jiwon’s eyes. “i’m sorry,” he chokes out, barely coherent once the hiccups come. “i didn’t want to bother you, i never meant— i didn’t want, i don’t, that’s not.. i’m just making things worse, i’m sorry.”
everything else is static to vesper as his focus is solely on jiwon. despite the hands covering his ears which the actor gently pries away as if that was the thing preventing jiwon from hearing him. he gazes at the manager, the exchange of words making him scrunch up his nose. their eyes meet and vesper only gives a small nod and he’s about to state something before the manager questions something he didn’t think would come out right away. he clenches his jaw, but at the same time he understands why the manager’s asking.
‘are you dating that co-star?’
“are you serious right now?”
‘dispatch, naver. vesper, it’s everywhere.’
vesper pokes his tongue against his inner seat and his eyes turn hard and cold. he notices how that takes the manager back a few steps before vesper firmly shakes his head. “no, i’m not. the rumors you all must have heard are false. while i did accompany her to the cafe before heading to the studio to shoot for the movie, we did nothing else. you of all people should know, the media loves to twist things around.”
though the thought of the media twisting things around only reminds him of what the female was capable of doing. he’ll have to get to the bottom of everything before anything else. but first, jiwon needs him and it breaks him gradually as he sees jiwon fall apart. he shakes his head and cups jiwon’s cheeks, pressing his forehead against his own. he doesn’t care who witnesses this but he knows it’s one way to calm the other down. or so he hopes.
“you’re not bothering me. you never bother me. don’t listen to them. hey—” he speaks softly enough for jiwon to hear, keeping their forehead pressed against one another. “take deep breathes. you’re okay. you’re not making anything worse.” he continues coaching the other before easing back just enough to crane his head to grab the attention of the manager. “i need to know exactly what happened, not the bullshit that’s on the news.” he brings jiwon into his arms, keeping him secure though his eyes don’t waver from the manager. “what did you see, what did you hear?”
“he needs all the information he can get. then he’ll have to talk to his manager and even pay a visit to his co-star and her management team as well. he doesn’t care how big she may be and how this movie will bring him higher. he was interested in the part and while he thought he’d be in a good terms with the actress, she quickly showed her true colors like all the rest of those he’s worked with. they thrive for fame and will go for anything to get it. “jiwon, you can tell me later, okay? if your manager says you need to go to the doctor, then you will. i’ll go with you.”

of all their conversations over the years, vesper addressing him as my prince has perhaps always been too bold. out of line, honestly, even for a knight of his status. and yet jiwon has never once reprimanded him nor ever complained. the first time vesper called out to him in that manner, something frighteningly near to intimacy, jiwon hadn’t even flinched. it only ever felt natural, despite no less than twenty laws declaring otherwise.
so he smiles, nods, and places his hand in vesper’s, completely and wholly at ease. if they were to be spotted by anyone, cries of scandal! would spread through the kingdom and her neighbours as quickly and voraciously as a wildfire. the crown prince and his head knight, palms bare and clasped together under the moon’s watchful gaze? outrageous! unseemly! somehow, though, jiwon feels nothing short of serene as they make the trip to the koi pond. the hedge maze certainly guards them against wandering eyes, never mind the increasing distance between themselves and the castle. perhaps jiwon would not mind too terribly if someone were to see them, but he appreciates the privacy all the same.
as on most nights, the gardens are quiet. flower beds whisper, orchards hum. whistling wind and feathers rustling in the trees. at the moment, the koi fish are the noisiest, wriggling in the pond and rushing to greet the knight who spoils them rotten. jiwon giggles, quiet little sounds, while teasing the fish with his fingers. no food from the prince, some soon realise, and jiwon nearly gets nipped by one when vesper’s voice rejoins the evening.
he hadn’t expected an answer, having only asked the question in jest, but hearing one now (and one so honest) only leaves jiwon with several more questions. none, vesper says, none of the ones tonight. does that mean someone from a previous party would have met his meticulous criteria? no, surely vesper would have said something. and why does the knight’s gaze feel so far away now, lost in the ripples of the moonlit pond? beside him, jiwon stares inquisitively, blatantly, for any sign of humour but finds none. he doesn’t know how to respond, how to remain graceful in such a foreign mood. so he smiles, though it’s a bit wan, and turns back to the fish, fingers in the water once more.
“the koi, perhaps? they do not talk and need only food to be happy. and i would much rather kiss one of them than anyone i danced with tonight.”
he remembers that night when he had slipped upon the honorifics. ‘my prince’ wasn’t one to be called to the future crowned prince, especially from a mere head knight. whilst his status stands as one of the highest of knight along with his father. referring to jiwon as ‘his prince’ was far too bold, yet while he expected to be reprimanded by the prince himself, he was only greeted by an amused smile instead. since then, vesper says it so freely as if no other meaning behind it.
‘it should be our prince.’ he reprimands himself as he stares at the reflection in the mirror before he scrunches up his nose.
‘no, as long as prince jiwon doesn’t mind it, then i will continue to say so.’
although he is careful and only does so whenever it is just jiwon and him. the koi fish (like his children) obviously do not count as the koi know more than anyone else. vesper takes the time to feed what he likes to call the water puppies. koi fish were like that. he chuckles when seeing jiwon tease them. the poor little things, he leans down and some swim away having realize that food will not come to them just yet; however, vesper sneaks a few snacks and allows the fish to lightly suck on his fingers as if more food would come by doing so.
he pets a few before drying his hand as he looks up at the moon. it’s bright tonight, a crescent that matches the ones that jiwon would normally sport when his smile reaches his eyes. he gazes at it briefly before returning his attention solely on the future king. he finds the little interaction with jiwon and the koi fish adorable and he can’t help but let out an amused laugh as he shakes his head. so the prince would kiss the koi fish than him? no. vesper cannot think about this.
“the koi would be a better match than the ones i’ve come to see you interact with and those i have bumped into.” then, having the heaviness on his shoulder once more, he rests his hand on jiwon’s shoulder before bringing up a small smile. “worry not, your highness. you will find your match befitting for you someday. you are our kingdom and so if the suitor isn’t befitting for you, then they are not befitting for our kingdom.”

for just a split-second, they’re sixteen again, fighting over the last french fry and chasing each other on the sand. the moon watches from her perch in the star-speckled sky, and jiwon can’t tell if the salt he tastes is from the late night snack or the ocean just a skip away. perhaps the evening started with raised voices and slamming doors, but it’s petered out into a peace that comes only with the right company. the nerves, the frustration, the loss and hurt—all of them gone and replaced with the one thing he’s wanted: freedom.
jiwon blinks and finds himself back in the restaurant, next to an older version of that vesper on the beach flip through the menu. now he’s saying something, pointing to something, and jiwon blinks again to cross the veil of nostalgia. “they’re cute,” he hums in agreement, smiling at the photo of the spider hotdogs. “too cute to eat, actually.” knowing his soulmate, vesper will probably shovel five into his mouth as soon as the plate hits their table, so jiwon picks up his phone with the camera app already open for another mini photoshoot. if he doesn’t get a picture of those adorable spider hotdogs without vesper’s photobombing, he might just throw a fit.
“i’m sure they do take-out. you should ask when the waiter walks by. and, hey..!” leaning away and holding his phone out of reach, jiwon shoots vesper a warning look. “it was the last picture until you decided to order half the menu! now i have to take pictures of those, too, and you get to practise being patient some more.”
nodding with an air of finality, jiwon eases up and keeps his phone clutched close to his chest in case vesper tries to snatch it from him again. finally, though, he does shift his focus to eating bits of what they’ve ordered. another mini mummy pizza, a few sips of the witch’s brew float, and a spoonful of ice cream. he even cuts into the ooey gooey raspberry moelleux, which turns out to be a molten lava cake with raspberry filing instead of the typical chocolate. it’s just the right mix of tart and sweet, every bite pleasantly decadent, and jiwon can picture himself making a second visit just for this cake. if only the trip weren’t so far…
he’s halfway through the cake when vesper mentions ahra, and the raspberry on his tongue suddenly goes bitter. they had a few classes together, and it’s not like she was mean. she was just… spoiled. once, jiwon had told her how bad the traffic was in the morning, how it almost made him late for his first lecture, and ahra’s response: “you should fire your driver then. get a smarter one.” at the time, jiwon had been so taken aback by her comment that he never clarified that he rode the city bus. there was that, and also how painfully obvious it was that she had some kind of interest in vesper. how’s vesper? is he coming by for lunch? did he say if he’s going to the party this weekend? his soulmate could do better than jung ahra.
“why is she asking about me?“ jiwon deadpans before taking another bite of cake, then a scoop of ice cream from the float. shaking his head, he gestures to all the food on their table, plus a plate of what appears to be eyeballs that the waiter drops off. “i’m good. you order a pop, though, and something to go. i swear, your stomach is a black hole.”
patience, patience, patience? nope.
vesper immediately waves for their waiter and as they return to their table, he smiles and points to the menu ordering what he had discussed with jiwon before he beams up to them with a box-like grin and sets the menu down, watching the waiter walk off. he props his elbow, resting his cheek on his palm as he drifts his eyes towards jiwon. he’s already scheming how he’ll be able to photobomb these said next batch of food he ordered. he takes out his own phone, opens up the camera app and snaps a quick picture of jiwon.
caption : operation photo bomb halloween food photoshoot is a go.
he snickers and sets his phone screen down before shifting to sit up, finishing up the rest of the food they ordered. he takes another sip from the witch’s brew before nudging it towards jiwon as he takes the last bit of the food and leans back against the booth, humming as he tilts his head and he almost forgot how they were talking about the halloween party. he shrugs at jiwon’s question. personally, he had no ill feelings towards ahra, he just knew that she was interested in him, as she was interested in every other guy so really, it didn’t matter much.
vespers skims through his text message from her before he reads it. “she says it’s been a while since you came to a party and whatnot. she misses you.” he squints at that last message and furrows his brows before setting his phone down again. he zones out for a bit, eyes seemingly scanning around the place but not entirely taking in what he was looking at until he looks at jiwon and tilts his head. “do you miss going to parties? or y’know just — spending time at those places, being dumb and all that good shit.” he doesn’t mention parties very often, just that he’s going to go to one without actually attempting to get jiwon to join him.
parties weren’t the same without his soulmate there, doing the stupidest shit. seeing who can drink the most before they black out. the incident runs through his mind again, he blinks and he’s back at the hospital and he flinches before the food finally arrives and he’s back to reality. he nibbles on his lip. of course it still worries him, but knows he won’t leave jiwon’s side if he does attend parties with him. he won’t make that damn mistake again even if it kills him. he sighs quietly to himself, reaching to set up the food decently though he half-expects jiwon to fix it up before he waits for the perfect time to photobomb the food.
“oh my god the spider hot dogs are so damn cute.. i don’t want to eat them, but i do.”

dating rumors. they were everywhere and can never be avoided. one must watch what they are doing, who they are meeting and what they say.
vesper, however, chooses to do otherwise. which is why he’s gained fans that like the raw image he shows, but this also brings upon some that will despise him because of it. he’s known to be several things ‘heart-breaker’, ‘cheater’, ‘fuckboy’. a female trips right in front of you and you catch them before they can eat shit, suddenly rumors arise. he hates how this has become a constant thing, which is why it shouldn’t be a surprise when he barks back.
this one is new and vesper doesn’t hear about it as he films with said co-star.  a female about his age from america. she is the main character and he is the love interest, best friend. they appear to hit it off smoothly at first, but as the female shows her true colors, the more vesper becomes wary. of course, he knows how to separate acting and what is real life though that doesn’t seem to be the case for the female as she gets closer to vesper than what was discussed.
the director yells ‘cut!’ and vesper is quick to shift away from her. even as she calls out to him, wraps her arm around his arm, he shrugs her off and snorts when she lets out a scoff and stomps off. he heads directly to his dressing room but before he can walk into it, he’s met with his manager and his phone. he doesn’t look too pleased. he furrows his brows before taking the phone from his manager as they walk into the dressing room.
the manager turns on the tv and replays a segment where he sees someone that appears to be jiwon with words that make his blood boil. ‘malicious intent or just a clumsy accident’. he doesn’t think twice when he looks to the manager and clenches his jaw. “push all my schedules out for tomorrow. i have to go.” despite how rebellious vesper appears to be, the manager understands and he’s thankful to have someone like his manager.
[KKT] i’m on my way.
he changes into his usual clothing, tugs on his mask and heads outside from the back, slipping into his car as he drives off towards the direction of the location sent to him. on his way, he hears on the radio something that makes him grip onto the steering wheel far too tight that his fingers turn white.
‘looks like a certain actor and actress are getting cozy with each other.’
‘oh yeah, fans saw them getting coffee yesterday before shooting. they look like they’re in love and fans are head over heels for the couple.’
“yeah the fuck right.” vesper scoffs and parks just outside of the location before cutting off the engine.
with careful steps, he knocks on the door once reaching it. “it’s me.” he simply states, low enough for only the ones on the other side to hear. and once the door opens and he steps inside, closing the door behind him, he looks over at jiwon immediately and strides towards him without skipping a beat, crouching down in front of him. “what happened? are you okay?” he looks to jiwon then to the manager then back at jiwon, concern evident in his eyes mixed with anger.

safety doesn’t come in citadels or armies, nor in decades of training in a variety of combat styles. truthfully safety takes many forms, but that which jiwon has always known it is in a feeling. laughter that nurtures warmth. knowing glances across the ballroom. a hand on his shoulder, honesty unfettered. from the moment they were first acquainted, jiwon has never felt safer with vesper at his side. this sentiment, he knows, extends further than duty and recited oaths. the responsibilities of the crown prince’s head knight surely didn’t include providing comfort or helping him escape parties before the evening’s end. no, vesper has always meant so much more to jiwon.
sometimes, the knight is too bold. with his words, with his actions. as the future king, jiwon should admonish him for such brazen behaviour, but the reality is that he appreciates the honesty. please, he had told vesper quite early on, you may always speak freely when we find ourselves removed from company. in fact, i insist you do. and so vesper has done, and done well. a knight dedicated to his allegiance through and through.
but this feels different. it’s a confession jiwon hadn’t expected, a combination of words that prompt him to stare back at the knight almost incredulously. he’s not discreet, could never be with vesper nearby, but he still attempts to save face by turning to the hedge maze’s exit, as if answers to all his questions may come wandering out. clearing his throat, jiwon puts on a straight face (or the best he can manage with a smile tugging at his lips) and replies, “well, since you claim to know so well what i deserve, whose advances do you recommend i return? anyone worthy of my affections?”
there are duties to that of a head knight to his future king, however, there was much more than those duties. by come the knighting of him becoming jiwon’s head knight the two had been close to one another, close in age and all it was expected. but as years growing, so did vesper’s feelings for the future king. hilarious to think, he believes his father already knows very well because he was in the same shoes. or still is. his father insists that things could be different with him and jiwon. vesper can only laugh, despite the little hope that flickers inside him. he shakes his head quickly.
rubbish.
he recalls when jiwon told him to speak freely with him, still (out of habit) he will apologize prior to stating his thoughts and the likes. something everyone has come to know vesper by the head knight that isn’t afraid to speak his mind no matter the matters. but it takes him by surprised upon the prince’s question. he hums in thought, whiskey brown eyes glancing at the ballroom in the distance. one of the reason why he enjoys being here by the fountain. everyone else struggles to get around the maze garden except for the very few that know it like the back of their minds.
jiwon and vesper being two of them.
vesper returns his gaze to jiwon and taps his chin as he leans back before easing up, his hand held out for the prince to take. “come, my prince. let’s go visit the koi for a bit, hm?” he does this in order to pull the two further away from the party. they can deal without the main subject there for a few more minutes he thinks as he directs him further away until they’re stopped at the pond where vesper feeds the koi fish. “to answer your question..” he speaks as he stares at the water, the fish swimming freely as he sighs quietly. “none. i see none of the ones tonight that are befitting for you.”

just as the prince of the kingdom has to attend endless meetings and parties with potential suitors men and women alike, even vesper was beginning to be bored of them. they always appear the same as the last and he knows very well (not because of his feelings for the other, of course not) that anyone would suit jiwon much, much better than the ones he’s met alongside with jiwon. he remembers joking to himself that he would suit jiwon much better, being his knight and all, his head knight at that. alas.
a knight and prince can never be together.
vesper’s father states but with lack of enthusiasm. he knows very well that his father knows the great deals to that of a knight having feelings for a royal subject, such as the queen herself. a little ruffle of his hair is all vesper gets, confusion running through his mind until seeing the young prince. suddenly, it didn’t matter as long as he can see jiwon.
“agreed.” vesper lets out a chortle before shifting his sword so that when he moves in his position, it doesn’t harm the prince. eventually vesper sits down next to the prince as he gazes at him. it’s as if he’s trying to read what’s on the prince’s mind, but to no avail. “selfish of me to say, pardon me in advance, but not only does our kingdom deserve better, but you as well.” he states with such confidence, he even surprises himself as he brings up his box-like grin before turning his attention to the garden, staring at the flowers blooming under the moonlight.

time should never be under-estimated. there’s value in every second, much to accomplish in a single minute. an introduction before a panel. opening a letter of acceptance. missing the bus. one last goodbye. for better or worse, precious are even the smallest measures of time, and jiwon tries his hardest not to waste them. with smooth movements, he rises to his feet and pads back into the living room. his bare feet flutter in near silence against the floor, and the rest of him remains just as soft-spoken when he sits near the last box to pack. to imagine he had been crying in this same spot only minutes ago makes the corners of his lips quirk ever so slightly. vesper’s company truly did wonders, equal parts inexplicable and welcome.
gingerly, jiwon re-folds his mother’s sweaters before placing them into the box, smoothing out every wrinkle. he isn’t entirely sure what to do with them once things settle down, but he doesn’t have the heart to give them away right now. next comes a jewelry box, still pristine after so many years and filled neatly to the brim with all of her favourite pieces. each one still glimmers with a brilliance that makes the contents appear like a miniature replica of the city. this one, jiwon makes sure to pack delicately, tucking it between some of the softer items for protection.
the final few items are his mother’s most treasured novels, pages wearing signs of love proudly. folded corners, the occasional smudge of makeup, ink from scribbled notes bleeding through the pages. jiwon’s finger trails down the spine of each book, following the tiny cracks that also speak of appreciation. in retrospect, he can’t recall a day when his mother didn’t have one of these books between her hands. the sight became as common as the creak in the front door when opened too quickly, or the dining set for two on the table each evening. with all the care in his small hands, jiwon places the novels in the box and closes it up with a final sigh. sixty seconds, and his entire life is packed away.
despite the curious feeling swimming in his chest, jiwon gathers the last box into his arms and stands to survey the now empty flat. the blanket of sunshine streaming in from the windows has grown a few inches, and motes of dust dance in their afternoon spotlight. he feels a little bit like them: uncertain of his landing destination, but too restless to remain in one place for too long. something tells him everything will be all right in the end.
jiwon feels vesper sooner than he hears him. that unmistakable warmth behind him, a shift in gravity itself. then comes the head that rests atop his own, perfectly comfortable as it is familiar. “no, you’re just in time,” jiwon answers with a smile spreading steadily across his lips. head tipping back to rest against vesper’s shoulder, he peers up and continues, “i finished packing. this is the last box. oh— what did you talk to the landlord about? he didn’t yell at you, did he?”
vesper takes a look around the apartment. he didn’t realize how empty it was now that he’s paying attention to his surroundings more than his cherished. a soft sigh emits when feeling the other’s head on his chest, obsidian eyes gazing down to jiwon as he raises his hand and gently sifts slender digits through the male’s soft hair as he hums in thought. he takes a good minute or two simply surveying around the empty place. he remembers the very first time he stepped foot into this apartment. jiwon was still strapped in the baby carrier, little soft whimpers emitting from the whole situation, the other two knights of hell looking towards jiwon not out of hate or spite, whatever gave vesper happiness, they will love just as much.
jiwon must have felt the presence of the otherworldly beings in the room. hades, persephone, lucifer and two other knights of hell. vesper hushes them as they began conversing randomly about things and he throws a glare at them. ‘you’re scaring him.’ he simply states crouching down as he sees how visibly calm the infant appeared upon the close proximity between him and the demon. he sighs before easing away and that is when the explanation of the cherished and demon begins. it ends with a blood oath, jiwon’s mother slicing her palm and shaking vesper’s hand which seals the deal. vesper almost choking which surprises and makes the others laugh in the room.
‘what? it’s a genuine question.’ jiwon’s mother shrugs her shoulder. ‘you will be his soulmate.’
vesper visibly flinches back at that. ‘sorry, your cherished.’ he relaxes, nodding slowly.
‘i’ll have no romantic feelings for him until he is 17, the legal age in the nether, but i cannot show myself until his 20th birthday regardless.’
'and you won’t break that rule, correct?’ vesper knows, she’s just looking out for her son.
‘that would be breaking our oath. although i despise humans, you and jiwon are the exceptions.’ he admits, eyes gazing at the others in the room who seem far too amused by him.
vesper simply rolls his eyes.
though vesper still felt the hesitance, the deal has been sealed and he’s shown the mother his true self, just like he had shown jiwon the very first time they met each other officially after 20 years of watching over his cherished. the very first time he was able to hold him and the connection far too strong. there was no doubt in his mind. hilarious to think that all his life before jiwon was born, he always thought of ways to get rid of his cherished, finding the idea of cherishes for demons were just a wink link in the food chain. but the prophecy never fails.
vesper is pulled from his cloud of thoughts upon the sound of his cherished’s voice, he tilts his head down and gazes at him, his eyes never having changed back to the whiskey brown, still enshrouded in onyx instead. he can’t help but love how jiwon looks into them without any ounce of fear. “perfect, then we can go ahead and bring these elsewhere for the time being while we find a better home for you, angel.” he draws out, the door soon opening by itself as the boxes soon disappear at the snap of his fingers. “oh, the landlord.” jiwon may not be able to hear it, but he can still hear the screams of despair of the landlord back in his office. “certainly not. we just had a conversation then played a little game is all.”
