i feel like some yellowjackets fans have kind of made up this alternate fanon version of jackie - extrapolated from her dialogue and mannerisms, perhaps, but extrapolated nonetheless - they make her out as a klutzy awkward dork with no social skills or friends to speak of (except for shauna, of course). i don’t think this interpretation of her character is backed up by canon and quite frankly, it’s exhausting!!! not to mention the person who posted this is also a chronic heathers misunderstander, but i digress 🥴

jackie may not be HBIC popular, but she has enough social leverage and influence that coach martinez directly tells jackie in the pilot that’s why he selected her as team captain. she knows how to wield authority to her advantage. in the wilderness, this authority gradually erodes as jackie becomes alienated from the rest of the team, and i think that’s where this “lonely loser” thing comes from.

jackie textually represents civilization. when it comes to social order, she knows the rules of the game and how to play it, but all of that goes out the window after the plane crash. not to say that jackie isn’t clumsy or awkward or dorky at times but to say “lol what an unpopular loser” is a disservice to the character

#the entire point of the wilderness is that the social order has completely broken down #shauna who was considered a “sidekick” before becomes invaluable as the butcher #taissa who's supposed to have everything in order completely loses her balance as “other” tai takes over #in that same way jackie (who was absolutely popular because she was liked by literally everyone) becomes a “lonely loser” because her #presence symbolises societal norms etc etc #idk if i'm explaining this right but jackie was the epitome of Popular pre-plane crash #and her in the wilderness =/= her before #it's the same person but she has lost the authority and leverage (as op said) that she had before when she was considered the “perfect” girl #& because she can't adjust to the new social hierarchy in the wilderness (which values physical skills more) she becomes the “lonely loser” #sorry for rambling🙏🏻 #jackie taylor #yellowjackets
