So there’s an AU that a fan art is created that really inspired me to write a fic for. Like, almost brain rot levels of inspiration here. I messaged her about it, but then later saw that she doesn’t take messages from people she doesn’t follow (which I totally get, you gotta do what you think you should for safety and mental health purposes.) Later, she mentioned something else about her AU, and it turns out that she’s taking it in a completely different direction than I had thought of for my hypothetical story, leaving the only similarities between the two being that a character who is canonically quite kind and gentle has become a dangerous villain, but in completely different ways. In your opinion and that of your readers, given this development and that the two ideas have now taken different forks in a villainous road, do I need the artist’s permission to write and post this story that was inspired by her art? Or is this a situation where the whole concept of “transformative works” applies? This is probably a stupid question. I just don’t want to upset people in the fandom and illicit a mob response.

I don't know that you ever needed "permission" to write your work. I mean, yes, it's definitely polite to ask but at the same time I think just making sure you credit the artist as the inspiration and link back to the art is enough? If you'd like, you can also specifically explain that it was the imagery that inspired you if you're worried.
