My take on the "why black metal distances itself from other subgenres" is because other subgenres often lack the theatrical, more raw and edgy or dark elements, plus the mystery and use of personas on stage (which is ironic because when bands like Slipknot and Ghost do it's sooooo cool 🙄), with the little difference that bm does it always while incorporating more shock content to it — blood even if fake, the corpse paint, the really big spikes, capes, the topics of the songs themselves, which like you said, often touch spirituality, the occult, even satanism, hatred and misanthropy, violence, the attitude itself of no happiness allowed. People are too afraid of using those "evil" traits because it's edgy or corny or childish or whatever and expressing your likeness of it will also get you labelled as "edgy" and "wanting to be different" (as if being the same as others is a good thing regardless of the context, what happened to individuality and being your own person?) when it's supposed to be like that because it's theatrical, it's a form of art, of performance.

Aside from that, black metal isn't a very easy to get into genre either. I'd say it's harder than death metal or goregrind because of the low quality/raw sound many bands take.

Sorry for the length, btw 😅 just wanted to leave my little grain of sand about the subject. very interesting to think about as an art student.
