Together for trust: Collaborating for a safe and connected future.
Tumblr media
youtube
Post offices serve as essential hubs for cohesive, inclusive, connected communities. They provide access to vital communication, commercial, social, financial and digital services, and are often the only public service provider in remote regions. Throughout history, postal workers have been the friendly faces greeting people at their doorsteps every day, building trust with communities over generations. The foundation of the Post's success as a service provider lies in the trust it has earned from people across the globe down the centuries. Today, more than five million postal employees are entrusted with a variety of essential and personal items, from messages, gifts and goods, to money and medicines. This trust has been cultivated through a steadfast commitment to safety and security. Posts have tirelessly worked to improve the safety of roads, providing training programmes for delivery drivers, and implementing security measures to keep dangerous goods out of the supply chain, safeguarding workers and customers alike. Furthermore, during times of disasters or conflicts, Posts have extended a helping hand, organizing supplies and emergency services for those in need; often, they are the first to assist in these situations. Posts can leverage this existing trust-based relationship to help bridge a gap facing billions: the digital divide. By connecting their expansive physical network to the digital sphere, Posts are embarking on a massive digital transformation to offer secure online services in this Fourth Industrial Revolution. The UPU has been a dedicated partner in building a safe and connected global network that serves nearly eight billion people each day with modern and secure services, and it is a key part of this transformation. However, close to 100,000 of the world’s 650,000 post offices lack adequate Internet infrastructure, limiting the services they can provide through digital channels. This means 100,000 communities missing out on a wide range of digital, financial and social inclusion services that these Posts could offer. We should ensure that all citizens and businesses have access to the full range of benefits offered by the digital economy. So, through its connect.post initiative, the UPU has set an ambitious target: ensuring that every post office has sufficient access to the Internet by 2030, to enhance digital inclusion of these underserved communities. Not only does the UPU strive to ensure that all Posts have sufficient access to the Internet, it is also working to do so securely by ensuring that Posts, big and small, can access affordable, state-of-the-art tools and technologies to support e-commerce, e-government and e-finance services. “Together for trust” is a call to action for all governments and their postal operators to support the development of a digital single postal territory to match the physical network built over centuries. This World Post Day, I urge you to work together with the UPU to ensure that people everywhere need look no further than their local post office to find access to the digital economy. Let us work hand in hand to create a world where everyone can benefit from the secure digital and physical services that our global postal network can offer. Happy World Post Day

Tumblr media
The United Nations Postal Administration and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced today the launch of a new series of stamps in support of the “Don’t Choose Extinction” campaign. The three stamp sheets feature Frankie the Dino, the campaign CGI-generated dinosaur hero, addressing world leaders about the climate emergency in the General Assembly Hall of the UN Headquarters in New York. Each stamp sheet has a QR code that, when scanned, will launch a video of Frankie’s speech to world leaders.
The stamps were designed by Rorie Katz of the UNPA, and can be purchased online at http://unstamps.org/shop/dont-choose-extinction/

Towards Sustainable Logistics.
Tumblr media
With around 7,000 electric vehicles, Swiss Post has the largest electric fleet in Switzerland. With its current 6,429 electric delivery vehicles, Swiss Post delivers around 30 million parcels carbon-neutrally. Swiss Post sees sustainability as a strategic priority. This is why, in the core market of logistics services, we are all about both eco-friendly and sustainable vehicles, products, services and processes. From 2030, all our parcel and letter deliveries will be carbon neutral, and from 2030, Swiss Post will be carbon neutral in its own operations. By implementing targeted measures, we are reducing our CO2 emissions and doing our bit for the environment and the future of the planet.

Because the outside lighting at our logistics centers is operated with smart controls, we also save on energy and help reduce light pollution.
The solar panels on the roofs of our processing centers supply a total of 10.3 gigawatts of electricity per year. This is equivalent to the annual electricity usage of 4,000 people.
What’s more, the roof of the Zürich-Mülligen letter center is also home to a bee colony.
Tumblr media
Internal transportation
We try to use rail transportation wherever possible. For instance, for journeys between large parcel and letter centers.
As for on-road transportation, we are gradually pushing through a switch to alternative drive systems in the trucks used by our transport companies. We currently have two trucks with hydrogen and electric drive systems in operation.
Tumblr media
Delivery
All 6,000 of our three-wheel delivery scooters are fully electric, and are charged using “naturemade star”-certified green power. This saves 7,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, which is equivalent to 2,700 return flights between Zurich and New York for one person.
364 of our 4,500 delivery vehicles are already equipped with an electric drive system. This has reduced our CO2 emissions by around 1,800 tonnes.
At around 40 of our delivery points already, every single vehicle runs on electricity.
From 2030, our entire delivery fleet will be powered by alternative drive systems.
Carefully planned delivery rounds will result in fewer empty journeys.
By providing additional delivery and collection services for bread, PET bottles, fruit & veg and dirty laundry, we will get more out of our current delivery rounds.
Thanks to the eco-driving training they receive, our drivers are also eco-friendly on the road.

Posts for Quality Education.
Education is an essential element of global development. Posts play an important role in connecting communities with lifelong learning opportunities, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 4 on ensuring quality education. Posts have historically encouraged literacy amongst young people through pen pal clubs and letter-writing campaigns. They facilitate the delivery of important reading materials, such as newspapers and magazines and support distance-learning by delivering educational resources and homework. In many countries, Posts also provide a means for people to register for higher education and pay their school fees. These services are especially important to people living in remote areas or with visual impairments and restricted mobility, making the Post a focal point for inclusive and equitable education. The UPU is also working to promote education through the Post via its annual International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People, which encourages more than a million children each year to express their ideas on a topical subject.
