I'm throwing my hat in the ring for my interpretation of the unnecessary feelings line.

Disclaimer : This is just my opinon please dont hate me and this is by no means cannon

So, I think throughout Turnabout Samurai, Edgeworth was having a bit of an identity crisis, more so after the second trail, which was spurred on by Phoenix rentering his life. This was making him question why he was doing what he was as a prosecutor and if he was doing the right thing, if what WVK trained him to do was the right thing. He questions this until the final trail when, he assists Phoenix to everybody-most of all his own-surprise. After that trial the question of right and wrong in his mind got worse until he confronts Phoenix, deciding that seeing him in court has made him question what he was doing to much that he never wants to see his face again. Even worse the questioning what he's bee taught he realizes that he may even want to be friends with Phoenix once agian but that's preposterous he's a defense attorney and Edgeworth hates defense attorney most of all the only one who's beat him. The feelings of wanting to be friends(perhaps more) with the buffoon need not be there they are unnecessary as are the feelings of questioning who's in the right. Yes, he deices, it would be best if they never met again.

Sorry if that was really dramatic, in short : Phoenix reappearing in Edgeworth's life and defeating him in court made him question what MVK taught him and also made him want to be Phoenix's friend again(and maybe a little bit more). He deemed these unnecessary because MVK's a bitch and probably told Edgeworth and Franziska that friendship is unnecessary and that they should never question him.
