my ass justifying south park and watching those 30-minute character analysis videos on youtube be like:

maybe i'm just a grumpy english major but i feel like a lot of the "lol people think shakespeare is pretentious but actually his plays are just dick jokes and swordfighting" posting can verge into "lol what if the curtains are just blue" territory. yes shakespeare plays are full of those things AND they are also profound and complex and thematically rich. people spend their careers analyzing them for a reason, actually. it's not just dick jokes all the way down. and sometimes people spend their careers analyzing the dick jokes. stop trying to pick one side of the dichotomy between high and low culture. it's both. it can be both.

these were the parts that made me go “…yeah… YEAH. EXACTLY.”:

I know there are some gay people who thought they were straight but this just doesn’t apply to Stan. He loves Wendy. That’s canon. (i myself am bisexual and practically kin him, so maybe i’m a little biased towards bi erasure, but still)

He’s not a fan of [football] as much as Clyde is who literally owns football-related merch. You wanna write a jock? Write Clyde. He’s pretty much the same as Stan but he’s just more put-together.

But Randy is definitely not the type to kick Stan out or blow up just because his son kissed a boy. Randy does too much to be progressive so the way I see it, he’d probably be overly supportive to the point of being an inconvenience to Stan.

literally the whole last bit about how kenny most definitely has it worse than everyone else. i didn’t know people even thought/think this?? and the more you unravel it, the less and less sense it makes. from what i’ve seen, people make up struggles for stan that don’t exist just so they can get overly romanticized.

what stan marsh roleplayers have you come across with exactly? i know fanon stan is terrible but i wanna know more about your thoughts on that. i'm a stan roleplayer see and i would like to avoid what you think would make me a bad writer for him.

If it’s not woe-is-me alcoholic Stan, then it’s the whole football-is-life Stan. 

I’ve been in several South Park roleplay groups before and those who write Stan are usually the ones that are always testing my patience. I love Stan as a character. He’s absolutely adorable in the show! But when it comes to writing him in fics or rp, people just can’t write him right. They fit him into this specific mold just so he’d look aesthetically pleasing with their fanon Kyle. 

I have yet to find a Stan rper who I don’t roll my eyes at every time they write him, honestly. 

If you really wanna avoid writing his fanon version, then I think you need to avoid these:

Alcoholic. Now don’t get me wrong, I understand why some roleplayers wanna write him suffering from alcoholism but if that’s all he ever does, then shit, he’s boring to interact with. I have lost count of how many times I had my Kenny interact with a severely intoxicated Stan. It got boring really fast. The only time he interacted with a sober Stan was when Stan approached him sober but still planned on getting shitfaced anyway.

Gay. I know there are some gay people who thought they were straight but this just doesn’t apply to Stan. He loves Wendy. That’s canon. You can make him bi or pan or whatever but you can’t just pretend everything that happened between them in the show never happened.  

Wendy’s perfect boyfriend. Another thing I am so tired of seeing is when the rper makes it seem like Stan is the oh-so-perfect boyfriend and Wendy had wronged him. Yes, Wendy had her moments wherein her behavior was questionable but so does Stan! One thing I can tell you off the top of my head is when he dumped Wendy because he believed making his own start-up company would mean he’d be “drowning in bitches.” Another good example is the fact that he didn’t know Wendy is part of the volleyball team and ridiculed the team. How can you not know that when she’s your girlfriend? Wendy isn’t perfect, but Stan isn’t either.

Kisses Kyle’s ass. If I had a dollar every time I see a Stan rper write him agreeing with Kyle all the fucking time, I’d be a fucking millionaire. Stan has disagreed and even abandoned Kyle for the pettiest reasons in the show. They’re best friends but their friendship isn’t all flowers and sunshine like the kind you’d see in female friendship-centric movies. They don’t overhype each other. They don’t go all ‘aww i love you :)’ because they don’t act like that. I can’t even imagine them acting like that. Their friendship is still the kind of male friendship you’d see in real life. They would be there for each other but they would rarely be overly sappy to each other. Yes yes I know let’s destroy toxic masculinity and whatnot but if you really wanna do that, then write someone like Butters or Kenny. Both characters aren’t that influenced by society’s standards of masculinity.

Jock. I don’t understand how this became such a common thing in writing Stan. When I think of Stan, I think of animal activism, his frustration with Randy, sometimes an asshole, but mostly animal activism. Sometimes I see Stan rpers mention his animal activism in his bio but they never really apply that in the rp itself. It’s always either him being a jock or him being a whiny mopey bitch. Sure, he’s played sports but that’s not his main interest. I’m pretty sure it’s not even in his top five. He’s not a fan of it as much as Clyde is who literally owns football-related merch. You wanna write a jock? Write Clyde. He’s pretty much the same as Stan but he’s just more put-together. 

Casanova. Where the hell did this even come from? He’s high up on the girls’ cutest to ugliest list but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s smooth with the ladies. This is the same guy who threw up on Wendy’s face simply for being acknowledged by the object of his affections. 

Still being abused by Shelly. Shelly has literally stopped hitting Stan. She doesn’t do it anymore. So to see Stan rpers say that Shelly’s abuse is still ongoing well into his teen years then... that’s just lazy. Also, stop overlooking Shelly’s struggles as well. If anything, their family treats her shittier than they do to Stan. But of course, people wanna baby their uwu soft depressed boi.

Randy reacting poorly to Stan coming out. I get it. Ya’ll don’t like Randy. But Randy is definitely not the type to kick Stan out or blow up just because his son kissed a boy. Randy does too much to be progressive so the way I see it, he’d probably be overly supportive to the point of being an inconvenience to Stan. He’d probably parade his son around town with a megaphone, shouting “I LOVE MY GAY SON AND YOUR BIGOTED WAYS WILL NOT STOP ME. BUT HE COULD BE BISEUXAL AS WELL BECAUSE HE JUST TOLD ME HE LIKES A BOY AND I DONT CONDONE BI ERASURE.”

Having it worse than Kenny. Here’s another common thing amongst Stan rpers: they always try to justify that Stan’s boohoo background is more depressing than Kenny’s. Kenny. The kid who’s literally living in poverty, has cokehead parents who beat each other up, has faced a number of morbid painful deaths, has seen his own friends don’t give a fuck when he dies, and has been treated like some circus act by having money dangled in front of him just so he’d do disgusting shit for his own friends’ entertainment. But sure, Stan has it worse because he has a dad who does inconvenient shenanigans and he lives on a weed farm and away from his friends who he still sees at school and has no problem spending time with outside of school.

That’s a long answer lol but as you can see, I’m tired of Stan rpers but I’m also open to writing with them if they don’t portray Stan the way I just listed above. I’ve always been wanting to try writing Stenny but I have not found the perfect Stan yet so
