in light of police across the country cracking down on pro palestine protests with brutal force, it feels like a great time to remind everyone to shut the fuck up around cops. don't make small talk, dont act friendly, don't fucking engage with them!! if you are arrested DO NOT speak without a lawyer present. protest organizers, get into contact with local pro bono lawyers who can be there for your arrested comrades. no matter what, if cops are there, shut the fuck up unless you are actively doing a protest chant. dont tell cops why you were there, dont tell them if you're affiliated with the school you may be protesting at, dont tell them if you came there with anyone, dont tell them anything!!!

actually, one of the most fascinating things about debunking posts to me is when people turn around and just add new misinfo to the post. for example, this one on the origins of STIs. here's some tags:

#yeah its from people eating infected monkey brains - This is likely about the theory that HIV came from wild chimps via hunting practices. It's also a racist stereotype. Bushmeat (basically, hunting wild animals) is of concern for epidemiologists because of the risk of disease transfer compared to more controlled livestock practices, BUT attacking consuming bushmeat as morally bad or "uncivilized" is a common tactic to spread xenophobia and racism. "Eating monkey brains" in particular is a common racist trope in Western media.

The evolutionary origin of HIV is SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus - that's from monkeys and apes). SIV is blood born, and was likely spread to a human when someone with an open cut handled butchered meat infected with SIV. There were actually multiple jumps from primates to humans, but the variant that went on to become a pandemic likely happened in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are also rarer HIV strains that came from other "jumps" across Africa, none of which were on islands. There isn't a way to be 100% sure, but the evidence discussed in the linked article suggests the jump that eventually led to a pandemic happened in a major city (Kinshasa) and the increased urbanization (more people interacting) and railroad travel helped it spread. Framing HIV origins as something that could only happen on isolated islands and traveling on rivers, when rapid disease spread is often the result of large populations able to move feely in urban environments, is both incorrect and also has xenophobic/racist undertones.

I don't know what this person means by "two diseases" "mixing." I do want to note that people frequency give unverifiable sources like "in school" or "my professor said" to legitimize incorrect information, either on purpose or not. It's a yellow flag you should look out for.

i have been trying for like. months to explain how the relationship between butch lesbians and trans men is not something akin to polar opposites and this is all i got. like it's not like this:

it's a venn diagram with a massive overlap in the middle. i'm not saying EVERY butch is a trans guy and EVERY trans guy is a butch dyke , i'm just saying it looks more like this:

these are not "mutually exclusive" terms- they do not mean the same thing, but we can be the same people, an very often are. there is a long history of butches who identify as FTM, trans men, drag kings, genderqueer, genderfluid, transmasculine, male, polygender, and two-spirit lesbians, and so much more. the relationship between lesbianism and queer masculinity is inseparable and the only people telling you that butches and trans men need to violently separate from one another and be at each other's throats are terfs. even if we do not share identities, we share our struggle together as heavily misunderstood and unseen masculine queers.

we stand up for each other when our identities get confused by strangers, and we get misgendered. we stand up for each other when terfs and terfpilled people tell us that transmasculine people and men can't be lesbians, when people say "butches just want to be men", when people say "butches aren't real women", when people call each of us bull dykes and trannies, when people mock the way FTMs walk and talk and look, and when people tell trans men they're "just butch dykes in denial". we stand up for each other and understand each others struggles.

whenever a butch lesbian asserts they're a woman no matter how masc they are, whenever a trans man asserts that they are a man and not a butch, whenever a butch struggles to be seen as both a man and a lesbian, and whenever a trans man returns to the lesbian community while embracing their manhood, we are part of the same community, we share the same struggles, and we owe it to each other to stay strong.

we are not enemies. we are bedfellows, lovers, family, spouses, partners, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, siblings, friends, each others support networks, even if we don't share identities perfectly. whether you are butch and a woman, butch and a man, butch and something else entirely, a male, ftm, genderfluid, polygender, genderqueer, transmasculine, nonbinary, two-spirit or whatever else you may be lesbian, you are part of our family and your experience is worth being heard.

Queerness is not just about sex and romance. Since the concept of queerness has been around, so have asexual and aromantic people. Lavender marriages, spinsters, vows of chastity. “Monosexuals”, “anesthesia sexual”, “anaphrodites”, category "X". Queer-platonic relationships, asexuality and aromanticism are an undeniable part of lgbtq+ history. Before there were any terms, any flags or acronyms, choosing to not conform to society’s romantic and sexual guidelines has been the very essence of queerness. The inherent queer experience of feeling alienated because you don’t love the “right” way or feel the right feelings for the right people, of trying to meet the expectations set for you while trying to build a life that doesn’t feel like a lie. These are all part of the aspec experience. We aren’t “invading” a space we don’t belong because it’s a trend, or an internet identity. We’re not “spicy straight”. We’re making ourselves known in a community we have always been a part of.
