May 2, 2024 - Guayaquil Woodpecker (Campephilus gayaquilensis)
Found in parts of Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, these woodpeckers live in and around lowland and mountain forests. Often foraging in pairs in the canopy, they probably eat mostly insects, like their close relatives, though the details of their diet are not known. Very little is known about their breeding behavior, though they have been observed excavating a nest in July and a pair was seen with chicks in October.
