I always am told or recommended that I need to learn to sit with difficult emotions or feelings. What on earth does that mean and how does one go about doing that?
Good question!
Our culture has a habit of trying to push away or smooth over all negative emotions as quickly as possible. We’re uncomfortable with being uncomfortable. When we’re in emotional pain - or when someone we love is in pain - our instinct is usually to just bombard that pain with positivity and distractions so we can stop dealing with it. Most of us aren’t really raised to be comfortable witnessing or experiencing emotional pain, and as soon as we encounter it, we either want to bury it or run away.
There are two big problems with this.
The first is that constantly trying to escape from difficult emotions can lead people down some dangerous paths. If I don’t know how to face my difficult emotions and I just want to run away from them, there are a lot of destructive things I can turn to - things like drinking, spending money I don’t have, using drugs, binge-eating or getting into destructive short-term relationships. Even less extreme options can have a huge negative toll on my life; if I try to avoid thinking about painful emotions by blasting the TV or sleeping all day, that’s eventually going to start to really impact my quality of life.
Secondly, when we never really get comfortable sitting with negative emotions, we never actually learn how to deal with those negative emotions. If I get dumped by someone I really loved, for instance, and spend a full year avoiding that pain by seeking out every distraction I can find, there’s a good chance that at the end of that year, I still won’t really have come to terms with the breakup - it might still be a really painful subject for me, and I might find myself struggling to cope if I don’t have any distractions available when I’m reminded of it. This can be especially damaging for relationships - if I don’t know how to sit with a friend’s pain, then I’m likely to simply drift away from them when they’re going through a hard time to escape from the discomfort of their negative emotions.
“Sitting with difficult emotions” can look different for different people, but simply put, it means you allow yourself to experience pain without trying to distract from it, minimize it, deny it, or run away from it. You don’t disguise it or downplay it for someone else’s sake. You let yourself say “This is what I’m feeling right now, and it hurts. I am struggling right now, and that’s alright. I don’t need to pretend to be okay.”
Some ways to sit with negative emotions include:
Label the emotion. What is it that you’re feeling? It can be a complicated mix of things, and that’s okay. What do those emotions feel like for you? Can you feel them in your body?
Allow yourself some quiet reflection time. Think about what you’re going through. When did it start? What circumstances led up to this? Have you felt this way before?
Express your emotions. Document what you’re feeling and experiencing through art or journaling. Draw, paint, write a poem. Express your emotions in a way that works for you.
Remember that emotions are temporary. Remind yourself that emotions - even very overwhelming and powerful emotions - don’t last forever. The things you’re experiencing right now might last for a little while, but they will eventually fade and you will experience other emotions again.
Accept your emotions. This is what you’re experiencing right now, and that’s okay. You are allowed to make space for this emotion. Don’t pressure yourself to control this emotion or diminish it, and don’t put pressure on yourself to “be okay” for the sake of other people. Accept that this is what you’re feeling right now, and try to be okay with that.
Sitting with negative emotions without trying to banish them can feel very unnatural or counter-intuitive for a lot of people. It’s not what most of us were raised to do. When someone comes to you in pain and you don’t immediately start jumping through hoops to try to cheer them up, it can feel like you’re not trying hard enough and that you’re letting them down somehow. It’s not true. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just sit beside someone as they sit in their difficult emotions.
Don’t get me wrong - distractions are not always a bad thing, and there are definitely times when you just need a break from what you’re experiencing. Likewise, it’s not good to spend too much time in negative emotions - if you’re struggling to experience anything but negative emotions regardless of what is happening in your life, you should definitely talk to a professional about that. But sometimes in life, bad things happen to us and it’s okay to just feel bad that about for a little bit. We need to let go of this expectation that people perform happiness, even when they’re going though something terrible. Sitting with negative emotions means accepting that negative emotions happen sometimes, and that that’s okay.
Best of luck to you! MM

If you’re living in an abusive environment, and you often doubt your own memories and wonder if it’s really that bad or if you’re overreacting, here’s a few things you can do:
Write down what your abusers are telling you in the time of abuse. It can be easy to disregard it at the time it’s happening, but once you write it down, you can read it later and only then see how actually horrid and disgusting these words are. Whenever you doubt yourself, read these words. No loving parent or partner would say words like that, no matter what kind of angry they are. If you write in the dates too, these writings will also serve as a proof, if at any time you decide to take legal action against them.
Check the double standards – would you be able to get away with acting toward the abuser the same way they’re acting towards you? Would you be safe doing any of the things abusers are doing to you? For instance, if they threaten you, or pick apart your appearance, insult and humiliate you, destroy your confidence, ruin your plans and goals constantly, invade your boundaries, act like you don’t have feelings or imply you’re worthless and a burden – could you ever do any of that back, safely? If the answer is no, then all of their aggressions, even ones they mask as ‘jokes’ and ‘well intentioned’ are based on a power imbalance. They’re punching you down because they know you can’t defend yourself. That’s abuse.
Ask yourself, would I ever do that to someone. For every and each of their abusive actions, imagine yourself, with your own future kids, or a partner if it’s the abusive relationship, and ask yourself if you would ever do any of that to a loved one, anyone. How would that person feel. Once you put yourself in their own shoes, and imagine someone else suffering at your hand, it becomes clear their excuses are worthless, a decent human being would never do what they did, no matter the circumstances.
Only abusive people will ever try to tell you that you’re lucky it isn’t worse. Only abusive people will demand you to be grateful, or compare themselves to someone worse to prove how bad it could have been. What you can do is keep having healthy references to what a non-abusive environment looks like. If it’s your home, you should feel safe and loved in there. If it’s a relationship, you should be completely equal, never diminished or told you’re less than. If these people are nowhere near making you feel safe and loved, and insist on you being less competent, stupid, unworthy, deserving of pain – ask yourself what the heck is wrong with them. Even if by some insanity you could possibly be stupider or less competent, a loving person would never ever feel a need to say that to you to your face, they would see what is good in you, and point that out, over and over.
If your doubt in yourself is based on this person treating you badly, while they treat everyone else good, know that normal people treat their loved ones, their family, with more warmth, more allowances, more softness and forgiveness than their collegues, neighbours, outsiders, bosses or strangers. If this abuser chose the most vulnerable person, the one who relies on them the most, to abuse, something is wrong with them. They’re obviously capable of being polite and respectful – as they let on by treating others better, so why don’t they utilize their skill with someone who truly cares about them? Because at heart, they’re just an abuser. Playing nice with others is only to build a reputation that helps them discredit victims. Problem is not within you, but a monster who treats the people they supposedly love, worst than enemies. They’re incapable of love. You were lovable all along.

to everyone else in school right now:
please use sparknotes. please use khan academy. please listen to school house rock songs and watch the history of the entire world i guess and tim and moby and bill nye. any documentary you watch in class can be found somewhere online with a quick google. get your books from project gutenberg and z-lib. download textbooks off the internet whenever you can find them. use desmos for a free online graphing calculator. if you’re learning something and you don’t get it look up the wikipedia page on it and put it into simple english to get the gist, then put it back into regular english to get the full story. cheat if you have to. school sucks so bad rn and if you’re like me and you get all your materials secondhand or from the lost and found, online resources are really useful rn; all of the above have helped me pass a class in some way, and i hope they can help you too.
stay inside and stay safe. best of luck to all the students out there.

My perfect mashed potatoes
The secret is in the water; literally, it’s IN the water.
See, when you boil potatoes, a lot of special starches and sugars and stuff leeches out into the water. When you drain the water before mashing them, you throw away a lot of good stuff, which is a big part of what makes mashed potatoes “dry” and bland, even when you add large amounts of cream and butter and things.
So don’t throw out any water.
Here’s how you do that:
First, cut your potatoes into smaller cubes than you probably do. (I’ve left the skins on for flavor and also, that’s where a lot of a potato’s nutrients are, like protien and iron and vitamins B and C, just to name a few)
Tumblr media
The reason for cutting them smaller (besides avoiding giant peices of skin) is so that there is less space in the pot between each peice for water to fill, so you use less water to cook them. That’s important because you won’t be draining any water, so you can’t afford to have too much water! For the same reason, just barely cover them with water when they go on the stove.
Tumblr media
But! Before you do that, put the pot on the stove with some butter, garlic, and seasonings; let the butter start to sizxle just a little then put most of a single layer of potatoes in the pan and let the brown and sear. Turn them, brown them on all sides, get ‘em fairly dark (I forgot to get a pic here because I was worried I’d burn the butter).
Ready? now throw the rest of the potatoes in right on top, and add your water, give them a stir. This way, you’re boiling in some of that lovely fried potato/french fry flavor.
Okay, so, as they cook, you may need to add a little water, not too much! ideally the very highest piece of potato will be poking just above the surface. Now, when your potatoes are really really soft, mash them directly into the water. Just pull them off the stove, leave all the water in, and start mashing. Trust me. At first you’ll think there’s too much water. If you get them mashed and they ARE a little too liquidy, just put ‘em back on the stove. You’ll have to stir often or constantly, but they will steam off additional water without losing any good stuff.
Now add some salt, and taste. Right?! And you haven’t even put in any cream or cheese or anything yet.
Speaking of which, you can use like, a third of the amount of butter or cream or anything, and they will still taste better than usual. So they taste better AND they are higher in nutrients AND lower in fats and salts! That’s a lot of win — enjoy your potatoes!
Fuck Columbus! Indigenous Rights! And happy Thanksgiving!

Lets get things straight before we let the whipped western media start reporting on the on-going ethnic cleansing and massacres as “clashes” or about Israel once again bombing civilians in Gaza as “self-defense” or “retaliating.”
For the entire holy month of Ramadan and only in last month alone:
The Israeli army protected Israeli settlers during their “Death to Arabs” march where they attacked any Palestinian they saw, Israeli Mayors and members of their parliament were a part of that March.
The Israeli army dragged Palestinians civilians from their own homes, so that the cheering Israeli settlers standing to the side with their luggages can move in to there, because it’s literally a public law that Jerusalem’s non-Jewish population has to always be under 40%.
The Israeli army stormed Al Aqsa Mosque, the 3rd holiest site in Islam and started indiscriminately shooting rubber bullets and sound grenades at unarmed worshippers during Lalyt al Qadr, the holiest night in Islam.
Thousands of people on Facebook, instagram and Twitter had their posts/accounted deleted or muted after reporting what happened there, Instagram claimed it was a “technical issue” but they have yet to give an actual reason as to why it happened/is till happening.
The very next day, despite all that happened, the Israeli government decided to still allow thousands of Jewish Israeli settlers to come to Jerusalem for their annual “Jerusalem Day,” a racist and nationalist holiday to celebrate stealing the city in 1967, where Jewish Settlers will march through Jerusalem while singing and waving the Israeli flags, all while being being 100% protected by The Israeli army at all times.
The Israeli army blocked any Palestinians from entering Jerusalem in the same exact day, all while accompanying those Israeli settlers and “defending” them as they assault Palestinians and try to break in their holy site.
The Israeli army deliberately used rubber-coated bullets on Palestinians civilians, not out of mercy, but to keep the morality rate low for their reputation, while still being able to disfigure as many Palestinians as they can to ensure that no trauma is wasted. Hence why the majority of Palestinians who got shot, have either lost their eyes or broke their elbows/knees.
The Israeli army prevented Palestinian medics from entering Jerusalem to tend to the injured Palestinians, the Israeli medics however were allowed to enter, but they only tended the injured Israelis soldiers.
By the end of the night, Israelis have set fire to the historic Al Aqsa Mosque, with thousands of Israeli settlers celebrating, clapping and singing right in front of the fire (literal videos of that can be found online)
The Israeli army is currently indiscriminately bombing Gaza, civilians causalities are increasing by the minute.
Western/American politicians who have been silent about all the violence that happened in this month are now coming out and claiming that they support Israel’s right of “self-defense” as they bomb Gaza.
The Israeli army is one of the strongest armies with (illegal) Nuclear weapons in the world, not only that but they receive weapons and 10 millions dollars a day from the US for free every single say. Palestinians only have rocks they could find on the ground and social media to show the world their suffering.
This isn’t and has never been a conflict or “clashes” between two sides and never allow anyone to refer to it as such, the violence and suffering happening is purely one-sided. One side is an apartheid settler colony that’s fully-armed to the brim and are ruling over and ethnically cleansing the unarmed native population through various war crimes and human rights violation that regularly breaks international laws.
Israel is a rogue terrorist settler-colony that have been committing crimes against humanity no-stop for the last 72 years it has existed, their existence and the lack of consequences and the blind support they receive from western Superpower for committing crimes that are set by the international community should be a concern to everyone in this world.
