my tf2 phase burned bright and fast and left me with some writing ideas/plot bunnies I probably won't develop further

Various Soldier Headcanons and Backstory

Bits and pieces that Soldier remembers

His birthday. He turned 18 on December 7th, 1941. He celebrates his birthday on July 4th.

Fields. Tall grass up to his shoulders. Hills where you could see plains for miles.

The St. Louis Browns. They were the best goddamn team on the planet. They won every game. (A/N: The Browns were pretty bad. They moved in 1953 and became the Baltimore Orioles. Soldier does not know this and thinks they still exist.)

He's standing in front of a large cross. It's large and foreboding yet plain and simple. It's a pale off white holted on crimson wood. Crimson feels familiar, but unpleasant.

A hand on his back. It pushes him along. He knows it belongs to a lady, one much older than him, but he can't picture her. Only her comforting hand.

Backstory Pondering

Born and raised in Ethel, Missouri

Mother died in childbirth, father shot himself after being horrifically traumatized by the Great War when Jane was a toddler

Should the ladies at the orphange know about his dad? Because he's Jane Doe. That's basically a codename for anonymity. So theoretically, if he is referred to as such, shouldn't the nice ladies at the orphange not know his past and name him Jane Doe out of necessity?

But on the flipside, I like having the ladies tell Jane how "his father died a war hero." They play it up, he protected his allies from the enemy Germans, he put himself in harms way to save lives, they want Jane to have a good impression of his father. (His mother is never mentioned.) So Jane gets obsessed with the Great War. He's suddenly an avid reader, even if the only books he reads are ones about the war. He roleplays war when playing outside. He wants to go to war.

Then, the twist is that the ladies lied to him. Jane was born a couple years after the war ended. His father couldn't have died in the war if he was around having a son in the early 20s. But his real death is gruesome, and discussing PTSD (being shell-shocked) is a big taboo. Jane was there for his father's death, but he doesn't remember it, so they just lie. A little white lie.

Which makes it extra upsetting when it turns out Jane's memory is bad all throughout his life. He barely remembers his childhood, except for brief flashes. And the one thing that was solidified was that his father was a goddamn war hero, and he's gonna do him proud.

Someone else finds out they lied to Jane, possibly Miss Pauling or Demo if I had to pick a merc. I don't think Jane could parse it himself.

The Mannchurian Candidate (Manchurian Candidate AU)

The Gravel Wars are freshly """over,""" or at least that's what both the mercs the citizens of Teufort believe. The story released to the public says that Soldier shot a stray rocket and killed Redmond and Blutarch Mann simultaneously, thus ending the war in a stalemate.

However, this story is not true. Teufort has been getting more and more restless about the effects of the Gravel Wars, and protests have been growing louder with each passing year. Soldier, during a battle, accidentally shoots a rocket into respawn, fucking up the system and incapacitating the mercs. Mann Co. sees an opportunity.

The Administrator puts battles on hold as they fix respawn, then brainwashes the mercs to believe the fake story released to the public ("Jane Doe is the bravest, kindest, smartest man I've ever met :)").

Soldier, now a celebrated war hero in Teufort, is quickly thrown into Teufort's mayor reelection cycle. He's hired as a security guard for one of the mayor candidates. He basks in this.

Soldier has also been additionally brainwashed by Mann Co. to do their bidding, but because it's Soldier, no one knows how much of his weirdness is Mann Co. and how much of it is just Soldier being Soldier.

The other mayor candidate-- the incumbent mayor-- accuses anyone and everyone of working for Mann Co.. After all, Teufort HATES Mann Co. and being associated with them is political suicide. Who's behind the incumbent mayor's slanderous campaign? "Political Science Intern" Miss Pauling :)

With both mayor candidates being secretly controlled by Mann Co., they can control Teufort and squash protests.

Meanwhile, Engie also sticks around Teufort, as he was hired by The Administrator to fix respawn. But he's having trouble-- he can barely sleep at night because of recurring nightmares. He's sitting with the rest of the mercs at the airport, no, a lecture hall, and a strange lady is jabbering on and on the Administrator is explaining a brainwashing procedure. He doesn't care. None of them care. The Mann brothers are there. Aren't they dead?

(May or may not have Soldier kill Pyro and Scout, since that's close to what happens in the source. They would be revived when respawn is fixed.)

These nightmares plague him with dread and unanswered questions.

After all, if the wars are over, why is he fixing respawn?

The rest of the mercs sans Soldier are also having these nightmares. This culminates in Engie rounding up the mercs still in the US (my thoughts are Demo, Spy, and possibly Medic, but it could be any combo of mercs with enough explanation) to get to the bottom of Mann Co.'s scheme. Whether they actually stop the scheme, idk lol
