i do not think the reason james was obsessed w lily in canon and regulus in fanon bcuz james likes to be degraded. no, he took it as a challenge. he was cocky and knew that he was hot shit, he knew he could get anyone he wanted but lily/regulus were acting uninterested and that made him mad and he wanted nothing more than make them fall in love with them. he wanted to say "i can get anyone i want, look at you (lily/regulus) i wanted you to love me and u did, i won" not that he is a happy dog who is waiting for treats and likes it when people gets mean w him. no actually, he wanted to make mean people beg for him so he could ego boost. that was his motive and maybe on the way he fell in love with lily/regulus who knows lol

“Oh, you really like this, huh?” Regulus taunts, fingers sliding into James’ hair and gripping, tilting his head back a little so James can’t hide his burning face, can’t hide the embarrassment. Regulus is sitting up on his knees, and for once he’s taller than James so James has to look up into his eyes, taking in the dark intensity of his dilated pupils. The hand in his hair pulls harshly, and James whines. “I asked you a question, baby. Answer it.” “Yeah,” James gasps out, voice breathy, letting his eyes flutter closed because God, the moment Regulus has his hand in James’ hair all thoughts are just gone. Another tug, another gasped, “yeah, I really like this.”
