I tried not to think about it as I went about my days, and mostly I succeeded. But occasionally the memories still found their way in, through a sound I heard, a word someone uttered, or a smell I caught in the street.
—Tan Twan Eng, from The Garden of Evening Mists (Myrmidon, 2011)

So you get your heartbroken. You cry until you vomit, the betrayal searing your throat until you havent a single tear left. Then one day after weeks of rain, the sun peeks through the clouds as it always eventually does. You wander your college campus and someone compliments your rain boots. A freshman confesses that they look up to you. Your professor gives you that extension you needed. A classmate from a previous year greets you by name from across the path. You get lunch from your regular vendor and she only charges you half the price as usual. And you start to realize that maybe, just maybe the most important person in your life is all of them.
