I made Applin and Flapple pies!
This project was unlike anything I’ve ever made! I wanted to make the whole Applin family completely out of pies, and doing that involved making pie crust do things it is absolutely not meant to do.
Applin is made from two dome-shaped hand pies filled with homemade apple pie, with pie crust eyes and tail.
To make Flapple, I had to bake pie crust in a dome mold, protecting his hands and tail with tin foil so they wouldn’t burn or collapse in the oven (ask me how I learned)! I made the apple skin wings and base with more pie crust baked on a dome, and I painted on melted white chocolate on the insides to add some structure and strength. I made an armature out of wire and wrapped it in tin foil for Flapple to rest on and lean the wings against - if Flapple isn’t totally supported in this way, it will break from its own weight (also ask me how I know)!
I tried my best to make Appletun, but it was just too heavy, and unfortunately collapsed under its own weight. No amount of franticly adding melted chocolate to the cracks could save it. RIP, buddy.
Still, I’m really proud that I was able to make most of the Applin family, and that it’s totally edible!
