This. ❤️
maybe it’s only because it’s sunday night and i’m feeling slightly mushy, but i’m thinking about the sheer amount of creation that goes on in every fandom i have ever been part of, and just???
we have as fangirls created an entire dialect (anyone who’s spent any time on tumblr can speak it/recognize it, and it’s very distinctive and expressive and the way it compensates for being a text-based medium without inflections/facial expressions and the other things that usually go into a language are endlessly fascinating for me). we come up with off the cuff headcanons. we write vast volumes of insightful and sophisticated media critiques/meta pieces/theories and speculations (and sometimes put more thought and care into it than the actual writers, alas). we get so much meaning out of every look/line/scene. it’s astonishing. we liveblog, we flail, we cry, we enjoy (and bewail) the experience without holding back, and spend so much genuine energy on the Very Real Need for Those Idiots to Just Kiss, and i love it.
we spontaneously and easily create full-length stories that are often better than many published books, or just a snippet to support or flesh out a single piece of narrative/spoilers. we interact and encourage and inspire each other in constantly flexible and fun ways in doing it. we eagerly and happily consume these stories and create more from them in turn.
we spend hours on edits, or gifsets, or drawings or sketches or digital paintings, or other beautiful pieces of art, and the talent is just amazing. simply because we love something and want to make something pretty. after all, all this creation is happening for free, in ordinary people’s off-hours. nobody’s an expert, nobody’s getting paid for it. everyone can participate. yes, there’s the whole question of fandom culture and its problems/issues, but that’s beside the point in terms of what fandom itself is.
see, this is why i am suspicious of any author/creator who proclaims to hate and/or dislike/not encourage fanworks. yes, some of it is creepy and strange and that goes with the territory. but honestly i think that ignoring or discounting the sheer amount of passion with which people love stories, and want to be part of their creation in imaginative mediums, is a mistake.
and because of all this creation, we talk to each other. we become friends. i have people i met here who i text all day every day about my life, regular things, non-fandom stuff (although there is certainly lots of that as well). i count on those people to be there and to support me and to turn to when i need someone to talk to (and try in return to be the same for them).
the world is stupid, the world is dumb, the world is scary. we need more creation. we need more connection. we need more of whatever this energy is that drives us to question and explore and care and make shit and enjoy it together and to tell a new and better story as a result. we need to move it beyond tumblr, sure – but i also think it’s a hell of a start.
so yes. this isn’t anything that hasn’t been said before, obviously, but it struck me tonight for some reason, and i wanted to say something.
i love you guys. keep being awesome.

This. All of this.
narcissa malfoy was probably the most powerful occlumens in hogwarts history and nobody knew
she literally stood up to lord voldemort and lied that harry potter was dead and i don’t know about you but if i were an evil ruler i would probably want to triple-check that my nemesis was, you know, actually deceased
voldemort had actual doubts about snape
narcissa swans on by without a whisper, without a second glance

Excuse me while I flail. (Now all I need to hear is that Jane Espenson wrote the episode in question).
James Marsters is on the “Once Upon a Time” season 5 DVD special features as a new character!!!! :D  Not sure who he’s playing  besides someone Cruella meets in the Underworld in this new extra scene of what happened to her after Hades is gone.  Wonder if that means he’ll show up in season 6 in one of the flashback episodes as he’s a big name to get.  Plus, I’m just so happy Spike is connected to “OUAT” and another actor from “Buffy”. :D

Um, you do realize that with the writers’ current track record, the fourth bullet point is all but a certain indication that Killian Jones’ and Emma Swan’s first son will be named Brennan, right?
DO NOT NAME YOUR KID
• After your other kid • After your other kid’s ex-boyfriend • Pistachio • Come to think of it, naming your son after your father that you murdered probably wasn’t the best choice either • Also why would you name your son Rumplestiltskin??? Like ? What kind of name is that ???? No wonder the guy has issues, I’d wanna destroy everything too if I had a name like that.

It exists. Only with a capella. Ever see the movie Pitch Perfect? Becca and Jesse are precisely a gender-reversed younger version of the Nick/Jess dynamic. Interestingly the movie was also written by Kay Cannon, one of the NG writers.
Imagine your OTP in a universe where everything is the same, except for one thing: their personalities are switched.

Everything everyone above has said. This video warmed my heart and made me smile -- 'cause this fandom thing that I am a part of has been here for a long, long time, and it's bigger than I ever imagined. And that's kind of amazing.

We Didn’t Start the Fire - 50 Years of Fandom
[details here]
password to watch: fandom!
IMPORTANT NOTE: I am neither Fiercynn nor Scribe - hence the link. I just felt it was entirely, entirely, completely necessary to share this with everyone, because this is one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen in my life. I just - fuck. I’m in tears as I type this, because this vid? Is not about a bunch of fandoms, it’s about what fandom is, it’s about a tradition that goes back a long, long time of people looking at stories and saying “here’s what I have to say about that,” and other people listening. Towards the end it gets into fandoms I know, fandoms I’m in or have been in, and that’s when I started crying, because - this is going to sound so ridiculous, but I can’t help it, because that was when I realized that I was part of it, this old often-problematic beautiful revolutionary thing. And then, the last few minutes, it gives us characters who tell stories in the stories (Becky Rosen!), it saysyes, you, this is your story too. It’s two-thirty in the morning, I’m crying, and I may not be coherent but I have absolutely no regrets. Watch this.

What did you think of Big News? I miss your amazing New Girl meta!
Oh, thanks so much! Honestly, it's taking me a little time to process it because there was so much going on in that episode, and I was actually away for a couple of weeks. I'm trying to catch up on all the stuff I've wanted to post, so hopefully I'll get to that soon. Thanks for asking!

Son of a bah..penis..nope that wasn’t better

At least she can say penis now.

Okay, you know what? I'm going to set the record straight. Because Jess has been taking flack for this for far, far too long.
Jess has always been able to say the word penis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the pilot. (Gifs by jerksicaday)
She only couldn't say it after she actually SAW Nick's penis, probably because she was freaked out -- and my guess is that part of that freakout was because she was also a little attracted to him by that point and denial is Ms. Day's standard coping mechanism -- because, honestly, wouldn't you be a little taken aback if you had accidentally seen your roommate -- who is, notably, your secret crush -- completely naked? So this manifested as an inability to say the actual word like a normal person, because saying it made it real -- and we all know Jess does not like dealing with reality.

EXACTLY. I really do think this was completely intentional. Both of these moments were among the most honest in their respective episodes. Lines like this, which are so resonant, aren't the kind that just get thrown in. I really think the writers put some serious thought into them -- which gives me hope that, as frustrating as how the breakup happened and how the writers keep saying they have no plan, that there really is a plan in place for all of this and the writers just don't want to give anything away. (And really, had the writers said "Yes, we needed them to break up so they could deal with their issues, but don't worry, they'll be back together by episode X," would this scene with Jess have made as much of an emotional impact? Certainly not for me.)

Yes, everything here is exactly right -- isobelfree, you saved me the trouble of posting all of this myself :). I actually do want to get into Nick a little bit, though, as you mentioned at the end -- I agree that his goofing off with the kids was a way of being able to let off some steam and do the things he missed doing with Jess as a way of coping with how much he missed her. But what I thought was also just as important in that episode was his admission in the steam room at the beginning, when he said he was trying to take care of himself more now. Granted, that meant eating squares of ham -- but it was without the dressing! And he WAS at the gym. When have we ever seen Nick at the gym? I'm still a little frustrated with how much they've turned Nick into a total man-child who is perfectly content to stay that way (as opposed to showing any motivation for growth, as he did last year), but if, as Schmidt said, this is a baby step, then it perfectly mirrors Jess's realization that sometimes she can't plan for or control everything in her life -- which gives me hope that someday the two of them will be mature enough to get back together for good.
I’ve seen a lot of complaints about tonight’s episode, mainly that it was a bit of a “filler” episode. I’ll admit it didn’t generally move the plot forward a lot, though I honestly enjoyed it, as I was laughing pretty much the entire time. (That good cop/bad cop scene KILLED me.) But I’ve been...

Jess shares too much sometimes without saying what she means and Nick withholds giving the same effect; this is why they broke up, not because they don’t have anything in common, but because they share this inability to get to the heart of the matter.

#OOOOOHHHWHOWHO #THEY DO HAVE THINGS IN COMMON LIKE LOVING EACH OTHER AND BEING WEIRD #THEY JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO BE REAL #THAT'S NOT JUST JESS'S PROBLEM FOLKS#NICK'S JUST GOOD AT CALLING HER OUT ON IT #THEY NEEDED SOME KIND OF LABEL ON THEIR BREAKUP FOR IT TO MAKE SENSE #LL THEY COULD COME UP WITH WAS WE HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON. #BUT THE REAL ISSUE IS THEM HAVING TO WORK ON BEING REAL OR TO GET TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER. #WHICH IN MY OPINION IS THEM DEALING WITH THEIR PAST SO THEY CAN FINALLY GROW UP.

Yes, yes, yes, THIS. I have so many thoughts on this episode, and I am also SO looking forward to some kind of post-breakup heart-to-heart between the two of them. Because neither of them has had any closure -- and by keeping them away from one another they've made it even more necessary -- and even if said closure becomes moot and they get back together (I hope I hope I hope), they still need to talk and be completely honest with one another. And I have yet to see that from both of them.

Finally got around to reading this and it is a spot-on criticism of the show. The thing is, I tend to be optimistic about things like this so I have faith that a number of these things can still happen. Keep in mind that in spite of the writers saying they don't have a plan, we did have a photo of the writers' room with all 23 episodes listed on the whiteboard REALLY early into the season. I think that they just meant that they have some ideas and might know the general arc they want to take, but are flexible enough to change things if it feels right -- which we KNOW they've been doing, given their affinity for improv -- or maybe, just maybe, they were being facetious. I have this feeling that they were so focused on the Prince episode in the beginning that they let things slide, and they had so many balls in the air this entire season that they had trouble keeping them all up and ended up writing themselves into a corner to keep things going the way they had envisioned. They said they hadn't initially planned for the breakup to happen in Mars Landing -- but that doesn't mean the hadn't planned to break them up at some point this season (much like the Cooler kiss was initially conceived as happening at Walt's funeral). So I'm willing to cut the writers a little slack, at least until the next two episodes air, and see where they take us. They've always managed to pleasantly surprise me before just when things seemed darkest.
What would have to happen on the show for you to get your faith back and to trust the writers again?
Wow.  This is an AMAZING question, and I’ve been staring at it for awhile, trying to think of the best way to answer.  I’m going to just list some things (in no particular order):
