Communications Technologies That Shaped the World
There’s no denying it, everything we have as a society right now we have in large part due to our abilities to communicate ideas. Here are three of the major communication technologies that have brought us this far.
The printing press. In 1448 Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press and made mass communication a possibility for the first time in the history of the human race. It’s thanks in no small part to Gutenberg’s invention that all mass communication was made possible. Prior to the invention of the printing press, books were hand printed and a rarity, usually only found among the rich, which severely restricted the spread of ideas.
The telegraph. While the printed word had been used to communicate ideas to the masses for centuries, near-instant communication had eluded us. That is, until Samuel Morse and his invention of the telegraph and Morse code. Throughout the 1830s and 1840s Morse would develop his inventions, and the resulting near instantaneous communication would prove to be a game changer and the basis of all communication to come.
The internet. It’s tough to credit the internet with any one particular inventor, as it was a collaborative effort, but it’s thanks largely to the contributions of Vincent Cerf and Robert Kahn, who invented the TCP/IP protocols adopted by ARPANET in 1983, that we owe the backbone of our modern internet. Used primarily by the US government until its commercialization in the 1990s, the internet is now how we do everything from stay in touch to purchasing our groceries.

Microsoft Pulls Investment in AnyVision
Microsoft recently announced that it has pulled its minority investment in AnyVision, a facial recognition startup. AnyVision made headlines last year, although not in a good way, for allegedly surveilling Palestinians. That said, a Microsoft-funded investigation led by former US Attorney General Eric Holder determined that AnyVision's technology doesn't power mass surveillance in the West Bank. Microsoft chose to exercise caution nonetheless, opting not just to pull the investment in AnyVision but stating it would halt any and all minority investments in companies selling facial-recognition technology.
As Microsoft posted on the website for M12, the company's venture investment fund, being a minority investor doesn’t offer "the level of oversight or control that Microsoft exercises over the use of its own technology." This is an especially worrying proposition for Microsoft when the company in question sells sensitive technology like facial recognition software.
According to Microsoft’s aforementioned independent investigation; "AnyVision technology has not previously and does not currently power a mass surveillance program in the West Bank that has been alleged in media reports." The company made the announcement on March 27th, but it was still not enough to soothe unease, ultimately leading to the company pulling its investment. The move leaves industry analysts wondering about the future of facial recognition technology, as there’s likely no shortage of investors lined up to take Microsoft’s place, each with their own interests and agendas.

So Long, Essential
When you earn a title like "The Father of Android," it goes without saying that no matter what kind of project you embark upon you’ll have venture capitalists knocking at your door to fund it. Such was the case for Andy Rubin, the former Google employee who led the development of Android, turning it into the world's most popular operating system. When Rubin decided it was time to leave Google, he did so with the idea of jumping into a smartphone hardware venture, which he called Essential. Valued at $1.2 billion before it even sold a single product, back in February the company announced that it had "made the difficult decision to cease operations and shut down Essential," mostly due to the fact that it had "no clear path to deliver" its newest smartphone to customers.
Essential did manage to release a first gen phone to its customers in 2017, the Essential Phone, along with two modular accessories: a $200 360-degree camera and a $150 clip-on headphone jack. While the company had grand plans for a sequel to the Essential Phone, not to mention a charging dock and even a smart display dubbed the “Essential Home,” none of their follow-up projects ever came to be. Plans for an Essential Phone sequel were officially cancelled in 2018, but in 2019 the company teased “Project Gem,” an ultra thin smartphone reminiscent of a TV remote. With the company closing its doors, however, there’s no hope of one day seeing “Project Gem” come to market.

Books or Screens, What’s Best for the Kids?
As technology creeps into every corner of our lives, and in an era when even our toothbrushes are “smart tech,” it may seem like technological revolution is inevitable, and much like with the Borg, resistance is futile. This seems to be the case in the classrooms as well, with more schools and classes integrating computers and tablets into the learning experience, often at the expense of more traditional books. But there’s a growing weariness that’s gaining ground and slowly turning into a consensus: the benefits of technology in the classroom may not be as beneficial as they seem, and it may be time to get back to basics, the basics being books.
Surprisingly, this dissent of the digital doesn’t come from those who have shunned it, but rather those who have embraced it and who work within the industry. Yes, it’s those who know technology best who are starting to not just call for a limit of screen time for kids, but an outright banning of it altogether.
“Doing no screen time is almost easier than doing a little,” said Kristin Stecher in an interview with the New York Times. Stecher is a former social computing researcher married to a Facebook engineer. “If my kids do get it at all, they just want it more.”
It remains to be seen if this movement will gain any ground, but given the speed with which technology has taken over the classroom, it may not be so easy to take it back.

What’s Coming Up In E-Readers?
We all love our Kindles, Nooks, and Kobos, but with each new version offering little more than a brighter screen or longer battery life, many have been left wondering if we’ll ever see any real innovation when it comes to our e-readers. But there’s reason to hold out hope for 2020, and here are two advancements we’re hoping to see come to market.
Dual screen e-readers. With a number of phone manufacturers such as Samsung and LG releasing foldable dual screen smartphones, the natural progression would be to see the same kind of tech coming to e-readers. Dual screen technology is nothing new for e-readers, however, a number of products have been released over the years such as the Encourage Edge, Pocket Edge, and eOneBook, but these products either came with high price tags or limited availability in North American markets. Last year, E-Ink unveiled a prototype that features a 10.2 inch screen that opens and closes like a real book, and we’re hoping manufacturers will jump on the trend in short order.
Color e-paper. Tablets are all well and good, but lovers pf graphic novels and regular readers of textbooks have long awaited and affordable and widely available color e-paper e-reader. E-Ink has developed a number of prototypes over the years, most recently at Touch Taiwan 2019, and rumor has it we may start seeing some commercially viable products to use the technology sometime in 2020.

Are Selfie Deaths Becoming an Epidemic?
No Instagram feed is complete without that perfect pose, your face the center of attention with a stunning mountainscape or rooftop vista in the background. But what happens when posing for these pictures doesn’t quite proceed as planned? It may still be the exception rather than the norm, but selfie deaths are increasing in frequency, and some are starting to wonder if they’re becoming an epidemic.
A 2018 study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care reported as many as 259 deaths from selfies gone wrong between 2011 and 2017. 259 may not seem like a particularly large number, but taken into context, that’s 259 people who lost their lives in the pursuit of nothing more than a photo, a senseless number of deaths in senseless situations.
Gigi Wu, an experienced hiker from Taiwan, had many years worth of death-defying selfies under her belt by the time she embarked upon a solo through Taiwan’s Yushan National Park. In an attempt to obtain yet another perfect selfie, the 36-year-old Wu fell an estimated 60 to 100 feet and landed in a remote ravine. Still conscious, she alerted her friends by phone who in turn allerted emergency officials, but given Wu’s precarious location and difficult weather conditions it would take rescue teams 43 hours to reach Wu, by which time she had died.
It’s difficult to say what motivates people to take such risks for the sake of a selfie, but one thing is for certain, the issue should be addressed soon if we’re to avoid an epidemic.

Home ecosystems/thermostats. With a wide range of products available such as the Nest, automating your home is no longer a futuristic concept, it’s an everyday reality. By getting the temperature control of your home online, you can easily reduce the heat or the AC from a distance when you forget to do it before leaving the house. How Our Phones Have Changed Travel, for Better or for Worse
Technology has changed or influenced just about every aspect of our lives, especially thanks to smartphones, and this is certainly every bit as true of travel as it is of anything else. Here are three ways our phones have changed travel, whether they’re for better or for worse is up to you to decide.
We never get lost anymore. Rare is the occasion that we travel without our phones, even even more rare is the phone that doesn’t come equipped with GPS and a map/navigation app. Gone are the days of paper maps and asking for directions, today’s tech means we just about always know exactly where we’re going.
We’re never alone. Traveling to a foreign land with unfamiliar surroundings was once an isolating experience at times, but travel data plans mean we’re always just a click away from our friends and family no matter where we find ourselves.
We document everything. Who of us have traveled somewhere new without taking any pictures? And let’s be honest, how many of us spend more time looking at something through the lens of our phone cameras than with our own eyes? The high quality cameras on our ultra portable smartphones have made it so that nothing gets seen without being documented and almost instantly shared on social media.
