I couldn’t have explained it better than you did, I’m speechless. Pls just I wanna read another monologue/discussion of an Arcane series scene like this again. Rn I feel like a child listening to a wonderful, mysterious, unpredictable story with heart-shaped eyes as they watch the narrator speak. Just wow.

Jayce: What about these? Do you know who made them?

Caitlyn: No. Well. Uh . . .

Vi: Her name is Jinx

I love this scene so much, it’s so layered and there’s so much going on that says so much?? Anyway I need to slow down and backtrack a bit

Caitlyn knows. She knows that’s one of Jinx’s bombs. But she hesitates. No, she doesn’t just hesitate, she outright denies it and then stalls. Jayce asked her if she knew who made the bomb and her immediate response is to say no. Because Jinx isn’t just some random terrorist to her anymore. She’s Vi’s sister. Who Vi obviously really cares about, and Caitlyn won’t betray Vi’s trust in her. But it tears her two ways. And Vi sees her discomfort and steps in, holding her hand to let her know “it’s ok”, and tells them, Her name is Jinx. This line is so interesting. Is this a betrayal of her younger sister, to identify one of her bombs to the council? Maybe. I mean, Jinx’s identity doesn’t seem to be some great secret, and they would have found out eventually, but for Vi to chose to give it was so unexpected. But this is also the only time Vi ever uses the name Jinx (I’m not counting her outburst in episode 3, it wasn’t being used as a name then). She insists on Powder. She doesn’t say to the council, Her name is Powder, my little sister Powder makes those bombs. Even though bomb making is not a thing that started with Jinx. It was Powder’s whole thing. No, she says, Her name is Jinx. Is this an attempt to protect her sister as well as she can, by not identifying her as well as she could? Maybe. She covers for Caitlyn, and offers no more information on her than she has to. But she still gives the information, the information Jayce later uses to demand her arrest. And, again, she uses the name Jinx. It’s so fascinating, because she is steadfast in avoiding using that name everywhere else. Yet it’s the name she gives to the council. Is it an expression of the possible disconnect in Vi’s mind between Powder, the little sister she remembers, and the person she has become? The person who laughs as she fires on people, who’s bombs always work? Maybe. Or maybe not! Maybe there is a completely different interpretation/explanation I’m not seeing. There probably is! It’s a very nuanced scene, with a lot of conflicting emotions and conflicting interests and conflicting motivations. That’s why I love it. I love that I don’t actually 100% understand the reasoning behind all the characters actions all the time. It means it’s complicated, and layered, and nuanced, and it means the characters are complicated and layered and nuanced too. And I love that
