ok, i was today years old when i learned this. and i'm not happy. so i had just started school when reading rainbow started. i wanted to read every single book that was on the show, not caring if they were below my reading level. (yeah, i get it. it's weird when a high schooler is in the kid's section. but i needed to decompress, look at the fun pictures, and read the silly stories.)
scholastic flyers got passed out right before school ended for the day and i would drool over them on the way to the babysitter's. this was luxury to me, since my single mom was working a full time job and a side hustle trying to make ends meet. if us kids were allowed to get books, it was because my aunt and uncle gave my mom money. (my aunt was like my second mom and my fairy book mother. my uncle has severe adhd and a massive "i'm not a kid person, but i will give the kids money to buy books because i love my sister and it's a giant fuck you to her ex.") no child left behind was passed in 2001. before it was passed, i was hearing grumbling from the education students at both of the colleges i went to. i cannot tell you how many of my teacher friends reasons for quitting, that dumbass law was in the top 5 every damned time. plus, there was no greater joy than when i saw LeVar Burton in STTNG and Roots, me going "that's the guy from reading rainbow!!!"

I was today years old. That is disgusting.
No Child Left Behind is one of the worst things to ever be incentivized in schools. It was signed into law when I was 14. Reading Rainbow was my show as a kid. LeVar Burton played a big part in why I became an avid reader to date. The joy of it. It's an adventure around the globe and through different time periods without stepping on a plane or time machine.
Children parrot behavior. In grade school, I always wanted to read the same amount of books as my teachers (50 books) and managed to double that each year. Before No Child Left Behind, book fairs and Scholastic catalogs were a serious matter like your grandma's Fingerhut catalogs. Libraries were (and still are) a wonderland.
Reading comprehension and proficiency in schools has been declining for decades. A crisis. The joy of books isn't pushed anymore and I'm always saddened by it. It's one of the reasons why I post my book reviews and recommendations on here, as well as posts from others to encourage reading and (novel) writing. Kids will parrot your behavior while the education system sadly fails to return as that example.

i am not joking we need to force teach cooking in schools. like. it is an essential thing for survival. do you know how easy it is to make things if you know even the bare bones shit about how cooking works. we need to teach teenagers how far you can take an onion and some other veggies it''s sad that people grow up not knowing how to prepare literally anything. and i'm not talking about oh this home ed class taught me how to make chicken nuggets at home i'm talking about learning the balancing of sweetness and acidity and saltiness and bitterness and shit like that and techniques and oil temperatures and how meats cook. it needs to be taught because it's literally not even that difficult and it matters so much

SHOUT IT
SAY THEIR NAME: Nex Benedict, another 16 YEAR OLD was murdered in Oklahoma, news channels are deadnaming and misgendering them, just like with Brianna Ghey here in the UK. But I urge you to not let your grief drive you to despair. GET ANGRY. Do not become apathetic, do not let grief numb you. Stand united as a community, lean on each other, have each others back. Reach out to any trans individuals of any age and make sure they have support in some capacity. Speak with your family, your political representatives, your school, anywhere, with anyone, that may be able to make some change, whether big or small. Everything builds, that is the power of a movement, of solidarity. If you make life a bit safer for one trans youth once, then you may have saved their life that day. And that kid might then show some other kid that there is hope, and so they live as well. And it grows.
Fly high Nex.

[Image ID: A screenshot of a Facebook post from Weisenback Farm. The post is a photo of two 5 gallon jugs of distilled white vinegar; one is 4% acidity, one is 5% acidity. The caption reads: Just a little warning for all those who are canning pickles or anything using vinegar. This year you cannot just grab a plastic jar of vinegar or even pickling vinegar without checking the label. Safe pickling requires 5% acidity... for the first time we are seeing 4% acidity vinegar... on the shelves. That renders anything pickled in the 4% NOT shelf stable. I belong to several canning FB pages where everyone is warning... for the first time ever... to check those labels or you could be throwing out many jars of unsafe pickled vegetables. End ID]
The National Center for Home Food Preservation issued this letter on July 14, 2023 warning people

They recommend that anything you have canned in the past 24 hours using 4% vinegar be stored in the fridge, and anything that was canned more than 24 hours ago using 4% vinegar be discarded.
