Don’t speak for me, Meng Yao thought angrily, but he wasn’t ready to speak to Xichen. He wasn’t sure what they’d done to him, but he was afraid it was unforgivable. He tried to sit up but couldn’t, and then he remembered why. Xichen had bound his muscles until they were practically gone.
Meng Yao raised his head to look down the length of his body and see what they’d done. He screamed.

“Stay here, please.” Xichen’s words were polite but sounded like a command. Meng Yao didn’t know what to think. Was this ordeal finally over? After Xichen left the room, Meng Yao tried to raise his right arm. He could lift it, but not far. This was bad. This was so, so bad. Did Xichen finally realize what he’d done?

Vacation
Xichen knew that Mingjue’s and Meng Yao’s relationship couldn’t last. Sooner or later, Mingjue would wake up and realize he’d been dating nothing more than a fuck toy. Xichen bid his time, but days turned to weeks turned to months, and still, Mingjue continued to date Meng Yao.

Xichen stared across the restaurant to the table where Mingjue held Meng Yao’s hand. He’d tried to downplay it earlier, coming up with improbable reasons for them to be eating together in such a fine restaurant, but then Mingjue had taken Meng Yao’s hand, kissed it, and not let go.
Without planning to, he found himself on his feet, walking to the table, and then standing there, staring awkwardly at the two of them. Shit, he should say something. “Mingjue, I didn’t expect to see you here and with …” He trailed off as if he didn’t know Meng Yao’s name.

Arranging for Xichen to be seated towards the back of the restaurant where he’d have a clear view of the table where dage and Meng You would be seated had been expensive but worth it. The only snag had been Huaisang’s view of Xichen’s table. He’d planned to watch from the kitchen, or not actually in the kitchen really, but just inside the door, but the head chef had raised a fuss. As if Huaisang had actually been in the way! Whatever.

Before Lan Xichen could reply, Shen Kuo brought up the class assignment, asking Lan Xichen what got him motivated. “Well, my motto is seize the day, live life to its fullest.” He chuckled. “Sorry, my idea of a joke.”
Meng Yao watched, amazed, as the young men laughed as if Lan Xichen had actually made a joke.

One Easter, after finding all the eggs, my sister and I hid them for my Dad to find. When he couldn't find them all, we gleefully announced, "We buried them!"
Huaisang: You buried my Easter eggs five feet underground.
Mingjue: And I left loose dirt to indicate a fresh dig.
Huaisang: Yeah, under a camouflage tarp covered with bricks and broken glass.
Mingjue: That was the giveaway! Pardon me for trying to challenge you.
Huaisang: It took me three weeks to “close” the egg investigation. I was eight.
Mingjue: Yeah, well, just so you know, there’s still two eggs you haven’t found.

Afraid Meng Yao would leave, Xichen joined his friends right after his first match, sooner than he’d intended. As he walked over, he ran his fingers through his hair, roughing it up just enough to make himself look a bit rakish. That look had never failed him. Meng Yao, however, caught up in a conversation with Mingjue – and what would they have to talk about? – didn’t seem to notice he was there.

Xichen chose Mingjue’s didi as his point of entry into Meng Yao’s life. Huaisang had come into the high-school as a freshman that year. What could be more natural than introducing another new student to his friends?
“You’ll owe me,” Huaisang had said when asked.
“I beg your pardon?”
“You want him for a beau. If I befriend him, I’ll be a person of interest when he goes missing. You’ll owe me.

Another Day in the Park
As he made his way through the path, Meng Yao lost track of the turns and unexpectedly found himself stepping out into the open area at the center. Yanli sat on the stone edge of the lotus pool. Unfortunately, Meng Yao had stumbled across the space too abruptly. He couldn’t hide that he’d heard her crying. He did the only thing he could. He bowed. “Please forgive my intrusion. I will make my way back to the house.”
“No, don’t go.” She hastily wiped tears away. “Please, join me.” He sat facing her on the stone wall. “I’ve been meaning to speak with you. I want to thank you for trying to find my brother.”

You Had One Job
“While you were away,” Lan Qiren repeated. “Wangi married that, that …” He petered off as if he couldn’t find a word bad enough to describe Wei Ying. “You were hired to prevent exactly this type of …”
“Mistake?” Xichen suggested.
“Atrocity,” Lan Qiren thundered.

Wedding
The lock clicked. Wei Ying shot up on the bed. His hands clenched at the blanket as the door opened. It had to be Lan Wangji. No one else had visited since the day the fists had flown and there’d been a body on the floor and Lan Wangji’s voice, so cold, saying “Leave him.” No, don’t think about that. Never think about that.
The figure in the doorway dripped blood, so much blood, clotting and dripping. Wei Ying choked back a scream. But no, that wasn’t blood, or was it? No, not blood, cloth, red cloth, the color of blood, but not blood. Red. Red with silver embroidery. Lan Wangji was wearing red. Why was Lan Wangji wearing red?

I would read the hell out of this.
Modern day sangcheng au
Pet shop owner and hobby painter Nie Huaisang. He's got a thing for exotic birds, he has a few in his private aviary behind the shop; he talks to them a lot. His brother tells him he needs human friends, and "Wei Wuxian doesn't count".
Single uncle Jiang Cheng (martial arts studio owner and trainer) caring for teenager Jin Ling. Jin Ling was given Fairy as a birthday present from his other uncle Jin Guangyao.
"Why the fuck would Jin Guangyao give you a puppy?! No. Don't answer that. Fuck, what to we need to look after a puppy?"
"Didn't you have dogs before, uncle?"
"I had dogs when I was a kid! Where's the nearest pet shop? We need supplies if we're keeping her."
"Found one! SangSangs Pet Supplies and Bird Specialists. It's a 10 minute drive from here."
Cue the first meeting between Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang at the pet shop.
Huaisang is happily chatting away about his latest painting to a grey parrot on her perch near the counter.
Who has the audacity to wolf whistle at the handsome fit man who just walked into the shop.
"I swear I did not teach her how to do that"
Things spiral from there.
