Daring to Didgeridoo
youtube
An review by Lizzie B on HakGwai’s Introductory Didgeridoo Class!
“I have always wanted to try the didgeridoo; fascinated by how such a unique and magical range of sound can come from a simple cylindrical bit of wood, I jumped at the opportunity to give it a try.  When our instructor, Hakgwai, told me that the secret to making the humming sound of the didgeridoo was done by vibrating my lips... well, I was slightly shocked!  Hear me out; when I was a kid I was always told it was rude to vibrate my lips, everyone called them “raspberries”.  I always thought it was just an odd thing that children did to amuse themselves, “raspberry-ing” their friends, leaving a fine mist of saliva over everything and anything in their wake.  When I heard that this is what I had to do to play the instrument my first impulse was: It’s not cute, attractive, and wont get me a ring on my finger.  But the truth of the matter is... that is all a construct of how I was conditioned to feel, after a childhood of training to be a polite adult.  But what no one ever mentioned is how immensely freeing, practical, and healthy this simple act is for you.  It exercises your facial muscles, clears your throat, and enables you to play the magical instrument that is the didgeridoo.  It’s funny, I had to breaking through a barrier of humiliation I didn’t even know was there, something as silly as making a simple sound with my mouth was associated with so much vulnerability.  Getting over myself enough to make a ”raspberry” again was, well, surprisingly liberating... all apprehension melted away the moment I heard the first hum emitting from the other end of my instrument.  Elated by the small improvement and invigorated by the amount of oxygen flowing to my brain, I smiled bigger than I had in quite some time.  Playing the didgeridoo is a remarkably sobering feeling; the act reveals parts of your respiratory system you may not have known existed, strengthening your throat muscles and trimming your jawline.  Our instructor also mentioned that regular practise of the didgeridoo can cure sleep apnea and eradicate snoring entirely.   The biggest lesson, one I’m still practising, is the act of “circular breathing”.  This is where you train yourself to breathe in and blow out air simultaneously, creating an endless source of oxygen to feed into the instrument.  Hakgwai said it took him around a week to learn this technique, constantly practising he was able to master it and can play the didgeridoo for hours at a time without taking a break.  I am grateful to Hosbby for offering me such a lovely experience, meeting Hakgwai was a pleasure.  He even prepared us our own DIY didgeridoo to practise at home.  I look forward to trying another class with Hosbby when I come back to Hong Kong in the spring.”

Hosbby X Pancham Bollywood Party | filmed by Travis Leung
A review from our lovely guest, Kaman, who attended Pancham’s Bollywood Party.  Be sure to check out the video above!
“I loved the Bollywood Party.  I was delighted to see that Pancham had prepared some chicken biryani, lamb kebab, and samosas for everyone to enjoy before our “bollywood debut”.  Before our dance lesson began we all put on vibrant clothing, the beaded waist scarves were my favorite.  It was when we all saw each other dressed up that we wanted to begin right away!   After Pancham wrapped the boys’ head scarves we were ready to go, beginning with a music video called “Girls Hunt with Eyes” setting the upbeat tone of our dance marathon.
In the first minute of her warmup most people had shed their worries and were ready to keep dancing.  Pancham encouraged us to make funny facial expressions as we danced to increase the drama, so we laughed and enjoyed the playful atmosphere.  It was comical, two men were the centre of the dance while the ladies danced around them.  It was theatrically sexy and hilarious to see my husband dance like a Bollywood star.
Over all, it was all good high energy fun and a serious workout!  The steps were so easy to follow;  Pancham broke down the steps and around 30 minutes later we were mostly caught up with the whole 2 minute dance.  The highlight of the event was having Travis to do our video shoot.  He shot multiple times from different angles, and we felt like we were in a music video!  Everyone even had their own dance solo, it was so much fun.  If there is another Bollywood event in the future I will be sure to attend.”

**We were so happy to have collaborated with Pancham on the Bollywood Party event, and elated to hear that everyone had a magnificent and memorable time attending.  We are sure to have more events in the future, so stay tuned in to our Facebook page for updates. **

“Enjoy and appreciate food, but most of all respect it for what it does for you.“
Pictured above are a variety of delicious dishes made from scratch by our talented host Rehana, a local home chef who teaches the art of crafting authentic Pakistani cuisine.  The Hosbby team can personally attest to the warmth, talent, and exquisite taste of Rehana’s home cooking.  The carefully prepared, complex layering of flavours make Rehana’s cooking a culinary experience not to be missed if.
How did you discover your passion for cooking?  Was there a specific person who influenced you?
“As to be expected it was my mother- she sensed that I was interested and encouraged me.
Whenever she would go into the kitchen (which was not often since we had a cook), she would ask me if I wanted to watch her make it.  Also, she might have noticed me listening intently when she told the cook what to cook and how to cook it.  I also had aunts who cooked for themselves on a daily basis, unlike my mother. (At the time) I was about 10 years old only!!!!
As I got older (in my teens), I started collecting recipes- I still have them!!!  Then when I got married I just cooked and cooked.  EVERYTHING there was, I wanted to try and make it (I still tend to do that).  Any cuisine or dish from any country, even though I had never eaten it or been to the country, and without a clue as to how it should look and taste. I picked up recipe books and tried all kinds of foods.
When I had children I made everything for their birthdays, even the candies for the gift bags and the bread for the sandwiches.  I made all types of fancy and fun cakes, cookies and finger foods.
I still love entertaining and making all kinds of things; whether it is for a dinner party, my mahjong friends, or when my children who are all grown up and married come to visit.  Also in my cooking classes, which I hold in several places and in my home.
2) What aspect of teaching others to cook traditional Pakistani cuisine is most enjoyable and rewarding for you?
“I like to talk about the spices I use. The history and origin of spices fascinates people.  It always surprises me how little people know about spices.  There are many different spices out there, each having it’s own medicinal value, flavour, and taste.  I also like to show and tell about my simple approach to cooking, which is basic, traditional, and fresh- with a strong healthy slant.”
3) What are some of your fondest memories shared around the table?
“Birthdays, anniversaries, and dishes shared with my mahjong friends.  Especially when the children visit and we sit round the table and laugh and talk together.”
4) Is there any advice you have for those just beginning to learn the art of cooking?
“Food is what sustains us, gives us health, and so much pleasure.  It is what we share with everyone we know since all activities and celebrations are centered around food.  I say to everyone- enjoy and appreciate food, but most of all respect it for what it does for you.”

Hosbby ADORES this fun and easy DIY craft reblogged from “thefabulousweirdtrotters”!  What’s better than taking something seemingly useless and making it into a functional, beautiful piece for your home?
It’s important to be more conscious about the things we throw away; as it seems, a great many commonly discarded items could be made quite lovely with a little bit of consideration and effort.  This craft is definitely something for a Hong Kong home maker to consider; this is the sort of easy and fun DIY you can do with either your older children or your dear friends over an afternoon cup of tea.  Whatever the occasion, try and invite some more handmade flare into your life!
Love,
Hosbby

Inspiration for the Hosbby logo
Remarkable.  The design of Hosbby’s logo was inspired by a big and beautiful hot air balloon.  Our founder, Christine So, envisioned a symbol that inspired others to “reach new heights.”  The different colors depicted in the middle of the logo represent the many types of people or interests we come across in life, and how they all come together to create something vibrant and captivating.
Try something new, gain new passions, discover a new appetite for life.
