It seems to me often we like to think of Milano as a classic city full of history, fashion, class, beautiful architecture, and amazing panzerotti. Yet it lives in ambiguity depending from where you approach it. For some Italians coming from other provinces it is a modern city with airs of inclusivity and freedom, a place where people work in cubicles and walk fast, have one too many coffees in one day, but also a place where people feel free to be themselves outside of familiar, cultural, or religious inhibitions. I am not talking about anything particularly out of order but just remember that feeling you had when you were nothing but a teen trying to dress, talk, listen to music, or do anything that you knew you shouldn’t or couldn’t do. Milan is contradictions, a punk band playing at the opera and a lady at a piano in some industrial underground bar. The end of the year for most represents new beginnings, fresh opportunities, challenges, projects to tackle, and possibilities. For others it means the end of something, quitting smoking, staying away from junk food, or any bad habit we mean to get rid of. This year I feel trapped in the middle of both feelings. I feel energized and motivated to, maybe not create new challenges but to complete ones I still have not been able to; yet I am still grateful for the people and situations that got me through last year so I can still find myself here, for all the happy moments spent with a loved one, for all the clicks of a camera shutter that made me smile, all the kilometers walked looking for interesting light and shadows, and also for all the sad moments I or someone I care for did not have to spend alone. This project has been met with nothing but expectations and good intentions, it has not been as easy as one would ultimately hope for, but it has, and is, an experience that fulfills many aspects of my interests. There is nothing I would like more than to make this grow to a point where we can afford to keep doing it out of passion and dedication. So for this new year the one thing I would ask of you is to please share this page, share the podcast, with even one person you think would be interested in, comment and let’s start conversations that are interesting and yield even more curiosity for us all. If there is one thing I know is that no matter what the question might be, we are bound to find someone out there who has an answer. The rain seems to never stop, today Matera got its streets turned into rivers. Makes you wonder how a city that has stood for ages can still suddenly succumb to nature. Someone once said the hardest thing in the world is living in it; I prefer believing we just need to find the good in between, in-between a thesis and an antithesis, in-between disagreements, opinions and arguments. The strength in humanity is our ability to learn and compromise. To know that in this day and age where the news seem to scare everybody into numbness we are all still just as vulnerable to the rain. About the photo, one i really liked taken on the Ricoh GRDiv, an off camera jpg that makes me understand why CCD sensors should still be a thing. Even in the land of the supercars there is still love for an all American muscle. It's not very common to spot a classic vintage around town in Milan as much as you can spot a Ferrari or a Lamborghini doing the rounds, a restored Alfa Romeo or a classic Fiat 500. Yet Italy in general does have a special appreciation for motorsports and car design in general, people don't shy away from complimenting a driver or taking a picture. Mid season is a real thing. We get 22 degree sunny days and breezy nights. October is almost over now. One thing I wanted to do this month, almost a resolution, was to start shooting more street photography again to share on our stories. Hopefully besides our podcast conversations and the photos we share, you also follow and enjoy our stories. There's many plans for those, including an inevitable dip into video, but before we get ahead out ourselves here... I know there is a great conversation to be had around film photography, and I am one that still occasionally shoots 35mm and picks up the odd rangefinder at a street market. But the world and how these stories work require certain timing that developing film won't allow. I thought about that long and researched a lot. Using my old reliable NEX7 and it's off camera jpg files is always a pleasure, but the images are still.. Too sharp, too perfect. So I reaserched some more and ended up using this Ricoh GRDiv, something that is now called a vintage digital. Old enough that might seem pointless yet not old enough to be considered a treasure. It is a treasure to me. It was the last on the line of GR Digital before the abandoned the CCD sensor that is so nice for black and white, for the bigger more contemporary APSC sized sensor as in the previously mentioned NEX7. Pairing such a small sensor with a wide angle 28mm that goes as fast as 1.9 is really something a lot of people back then didn't even get to experience. The constrains of the camera, it's portability, the beautiful grain and contrast it renders beautifully things I see and see again after I've pushed the trigger. Unexpected candids, almost wabi-sabi. It rains every time I'm in Verona. Doesn't stop me from climbing up a hill, through a roman amphitheater and a villa, for a wonderful, wonderful view across the river. Nothing much to add in reality. It's a beautiful city and I enjoyed a spectacular view I am very glad I can share with you. Besides that, if you have seen our stories today you'll notice an influx of reportage black and white photos; this is something we'll be sharing almost daily, snapshots of life in Italy captured with what is now considered a vintage digital camera. Autumn is in full force in Milano, the sunsets arrive earlier and the nights are chilly. The sights and colors of the foliage are stunning. A stroll around town is something I'd highly encourage, specially with a camera in hand. Lately I've been reflecting a lot regarding my approach to street photography, be it candid or with a friend tagging along. There's a surprise coming next week that will revamp and re-energize our stories and hopefully give me personally a new perspective on how I see and choose to portray every day life. I just remember how special it is to be in a place like Italy and when your sight is excited and motivated everything around you is somehow more beautiful. I try to find meaning in things we constantly overlook, because we get so used to them perhaps. And no matter where you are, find yourself, or live, there are so many opportunities and occurrences out there just waiting to be expectated, and even photographed. Sometimes we forget about the geometry of the world. We live in color and high definition, so much so that it might be a bit overwhelming at times. This past days I was asked about my decision to use black and white photography as a constrain for Italian Digest on Instagram; I do not think of it as a constraint. With the commodity that are smartphones in our society everybody has the means to photograph and record, and consequently share something just about the moment it took place. Whether that is reporting, personal artistic expression, or anything really, it can be distracting to live in this ever hanging world we have created for ourselves. I believe each one of us must be our own personal editor and consume the media we are truly passionate and benefit from. Black and white was a choice even back when color film first appeared, for its lack of distraction and almost crude representation of the world. There is a sense of timelessness associated to it but I would argue that the attempt of capturing the zeitgeist of a place will eventually turn into nostalgic representations of the past. Black and white might give us a new perspective on a photograph we might not have initially liked as well. During fashion week in Milan we got a chance to catch up with my friend and amazing streetstyle photographer @harrisontsui, and I grabbed a quick snap of his lovely @panerai and camera rig. Originally we met because we actually use a very similar setup, some vintage glass and portability over the ever present need for faster tech. There is something in that kind of photography philosophy that to me translates exactly into the fascination and appreciation for mechanical time pieces, and better when it is an Italian one with militar historical significance brought back into the spotlight precisely because of fashion. Walkable is an understatement, Milan unlike cities like Paris is a runway. Historically confusing with a radial design that emanates from the main cathedral it is a maze that both confuses and amazes tourists that get constantly lost in its backstreets and stumble upon great architecture and shops every other block.
