Officer it’s this one right here he crashed my drawing program and refused to cooperate

@neodracunyan here’s the criminal the one who broke my drawing program so bad I’m going to have to archive everything and clear its data again and it hasn’t even been 3 months since I last did that for spring cleaning. I love how he came out in the end but he crashed my program 5 times while I was working on him and has caused it to lag and crash constantly ever since. I adore this boi but I will always have hard feelings for his reference sheet. He looks so smug about it too.

Below the cut is my usual ramble as well as the sketches and shape study for this one. (He has taught me many things completely on accident)

So let’s talk about this.

I started by sketching up a kickin that will never see the light of day fate just looking up my reference images and eyeballing it.

That kickin was really really ugly.

I know saying these things about one’s own art can seem degrading and derogatory but believe me when I say I got a second opinion and they agreed that chicken was ugly.

And they didn’t even know I was showing them my own art so I know it’s true.

So then I did the shape study and figured out why this wasn’t working the same as the others.

Then came a lot of trial and error of pushing different combinations of these shapes and builds together until I got a siluette that seemed to work (this was the one I used for the final version of kickin)

Then came the face which was also a matter with which I struggled but eventually figured out.

Despite all of these setbacks I do really like how kickin came out in the end (especially the side profile view) and once all of the struggles were through I really really ended up liking how he came out .

So let’s actually talk about this design now shall we?

Let’s start with the kickin hawk design. This design benefited from the fact that I knew who kickins partner is before choosing colors so I decided to make his grey clothing pieces blue toned in the same shade as bubba. It’s not super noticeable in the reference sheet because it’s surrounded by its complimentary and cross-complimentary colors (orange and yellow) making it look far more desaturated than it actually is. My intent is for the rest of the dark critters to have this same partnering motif from here on out in their color palettes (bubba will get kickins yellow, Bobby will get craftys cyan/teal color, and picky will get something green for hoppy) this will add a sort of visual synergy between each partner set making it more clear when they’re together as a group who the usual pairs are. (Instead of redoing catnap and dogday to fit this rule lets just say that their synergy thing is the red smoke bc when I designed them I didn’t know they were going to be put together as an individual pair instead of being with the rest of the critters as a group.) the idea for how kickin hawks weapons work is that they’re magnetic (either the holsters or a specific point on the weapon itself) and depending on which weapon it is will attach to a different point on his belt (think like polarity the nunchucks won’t attach to the spot where the guns go because the poles in its magnets don’t match the ones for the guns to attach to. This also means that if an enemy has a huge magnet they are guaranteed to never get all of kickins weapons because some of them will have opposing polarity and be repelled by the magnet instead of attracted to it a.k.a science is cool sometimes) The mask is for similar reasons to dogdays because of the fact that bubba uses lots of chemicals and gases similar to catnaps when fighting and kickin doesn’t want to deal with the loose gases effects (at that moment at least I feel like kickin would absolutely be bubba Guinea pig whenever he has a new variation to test) I also dyed some of his feathers with streaks of the reddish orange color because I feel like the moment he got the freedom to choose his appearance he’d go and change it. And uh yeah that’s about it for kickins ramble but if you have questions about the design choices feel free to ask ( while some of these guys may bite I won’t!)

Why drawing a simple reference card is proving to be too hard for me to handle today

#like I seriously didn’t think doing kickin would be this hard #but kickin chicken is made up of circles #and kickin hawk is made up of triangles #and that has blown itself into a problem of larger scale than I thought it would #like combining death with dogday was not this hard because deaths design is made out of rectangles and other quadrilaterals #but kickin hawk is literally a giant triangle at his core and figuring out how to deal with that has become a challenge #this little crime against the universe happened during a break I took from the body to just kind of figure out how I want his head to look #then maybe come back to the body with fresh eyes #I didn’t mean to give him rizz it just happened that way #and at that point I was obligated to do this as a person on the internet #and to whomever has read all of these tags you deserve a cookie #and the peace of mind that I am going to step away from this for a lil bit before something even worse happens #I’ll finish it eventually I just don’t know when eventually is yet

Well this is what happens when I get brain rot from a design. I draw it. More and more. Until it’s not brain rot anymore and just a thing I draw on the regular now. @neodracunyan here’s the catnap/sleep demon design on a comic spread bc my stupid little brain would not let me move on to the things I needed to do until this was done. (And the little detail of his tail trailing behind him is kinda cute)

So these are both unfinished drawings I started around when Walten files 4 came out and I just never finished them. Sometimes drawings just don’t pan out the way you wanted them to and you loose motivation to finish them.

Well this took longer than I thought it would. Behold the Catnap/Sleep Demon design for the apocalypse au by @neodracunyan that I hinted that I was working on in the Dogday/Eclipse Hound post…….which was over a week ago………but I did get around to doing it so at least that’s something.

His teeth are retractable

His knees can be normal when he wants them to be

Those “whiskers” on his face are not whiskers they are extra vents in his face that red smoke can be released from.(allows more to get out faster)

The charm on his katana turns yellow like his critters charm when he’s not doing his whole sleep demon thing

Running around on all fours means that he gets very dirty and I’d like to think that since cats don’t like water or baths Dogday just does any thing in his power to try and get him clean. Cartoon logic can apply to such a scenario with situations ranging from chasing him with a hose to dragging him by his tail into the nearest car wash. (If it’s funny and could get him clean then it could happen. a.k.a. Comic relief)

Sleep demon wears socks and fingerless gloves because he wants to protect his (paws? Hands? Feet? Idk) from debris on the ground that could cause injury (think broken glass)

That’s about all I got for right now I have ideas for some of the others that nobody else has designed yet but I also have no idea where I’d find the time to work on them till at the earliest mid may? (Maybe sooner than that we’ll see) Till then stay cool whomever got to the end of this. Cya later.

Sketches+ rambling abt this design under the cut

So I’m going to ramble a bit and explain some of the design choices.

The idea that these at some point were meant to be toys kinda lingered with me leading to the front plastic teeth and kind of innocent looking dogday seen in the side view. I like the idea that dogday (as eclipse hound or as himself) could use that to his advantage to lure unsuspecting people in. I also like the idea that as a sort of tell to the audience when he’s showing genuine emotions or not (perhaps good for interactions with the other Dark creatures. Like if they know that about his expressions then they can tell what he’s actually feeling. He’s kind of like an open book to those who know him) I also liked the idea of him having claws on his hands but choosing not to use them because it makes him feel uncivilized and dirty. He has the mask because the idea of him often working with catnap (yes I am working on a design for him too) and having it for protection against catnap’s sleeping gas and just continuing to wear it as eclipse hound even when he doesn’t need to because it freaks people out.(and he probably thinks that’s hilarious) His whole thing with his jaw unhinging to allow for more of his sharp teeth to show is actually a bit more complicated than it sounds. His sharp teeth actually extend and retract instead of interlocking with each other when his mouth is closed (his plastic teeth do not do this they are always out) so when he’s only showing his plastic teeth none of the sharps are extended. His lower jaw actually grows and expands itself to whatever size he wishes to open it to (kinda like how venom does) and more sharps extend themselves to fill whatever space is open. The only drawback to this is the larger he expands his jaw the longer it takes to contract back to its original size. So making his jaw super big isn’t really advisable (think like the toothy smiles he’s got in the ref take only a few minutes to contract while an expansion to the sun on his collar could take a few hours)

I could keep rambling about this design but I have a cat with a katana to draw so….. cya later I guess

So here is the beginning of spring cleaning. So it has actually been well over a year since I last cleaned up my open files in my drawing program as this drawing is from Christmas of 2022. It is a redraw of an image I did for Christmas of 2020 after hearing the phrase “Santa Zoom” and knowing that I would regret it forever if I didn’t draw Santa on a moped because of it. I did the redraw in 2022 because my mom requested a little Christmas picture to send her friends and I’d been meaning to do a remake of it for a while at that point anyway. This probably means I’m going to redraw this again at the end of the year for Christmas 2024. Also some of these spring cleaning posts will have gifs showing a compressed Timelapse of the making. I likely won’t add these for all of them.

It’s been a hot minute since I fed anything to this tumblr account hasn’t it. That is not entirely my fault as I have been sick for the last two weeks. This here just so happens to be the last thing I finished before got sick sooooo yeah. I have a Lot of sketches and scribbles from the last two weeks as well as multiple unfinished pieces. Good news march 1 is quickly approaching and that means spring cleaning. Aka the time of year where I archive everything in my drawing program and start fresh with no unfinished projects all over the place. It also means that this tumblr account will be well fed with lots of artwork. I’ve been open for asks this whole time so if you wish to know anything about my process or about any of the oc’s I’ve shown here (yes they do all have lore of some kind) then ask! So at the moment I’m also working on a custom brush in my drawing program right now and although it isn’t how I want it to be yet I figured it would be worth giving some insight into how I do this. The brush is supposed to emulate actual painting with a digital brush. It would allow color adding and blending without having to change anything. The swamp I was attempting to paint above was a progress test so I could get a feel for what was and wasn’t working. A few of the big things that weren’t working well were color opacity,(when the brush was at full opacity the background behind it was still easy to see and took multiple layers to build up) blending, (extremely streaky and showing the brush texture more than I wanted it to) and color consistency (the color the brush was laying down was hue-shifting without me changing the color and would not return to the original shade leading to this drawing that was supposed to be a mix of green, brown, and blue to end up with purple in it. The purple is in the water and I was having consistent issues with greys shifting purple, blues and browns shifting green, and the greens shifting towards yellow.) At a point I looked at this test piece and decided that the brush simply wasn’t working as intended and proceeded to finish it as best as I could. I will be doing another test piece after some more adjustments to the brush so stay tuned for that I suppose.

This is what happens when I get inspired by weird things.

So recently I was working on an essay and left my phone on YouTube and set to auto play. This led to a video by dime store adventures from 2 years ago talking about dogtown Massachusetts. (Linked here: https://youtu.be/T4yhm_S-dHc?si=zPBSfoo9aKkm7XOX ) I was extremely inspired by all of the weird and creepy stories about the place and wanted to do a few drawings with these ideas. This one was inspired by the story of Tammy. I decided to draw something inspired by it because the idea of a woman who claims to be a witch harassing those going down the road into giving her food or getting cursed. The entire situation sounds weirdly hilarious and extremely awkward to me. And admittedly a little creepy.

I have spent an exuberant amount of time this month figuring out how to draw convincing tears digitally. It all started here with this colored sketch of Anne from amphibia. This is supposed to represent the moment she first uses her powers in the season 2 finale. I think it looks really good for having been drawn without a reference image. I do like the amount of contrast I got with her eye and hair to make them really look like they were glowing.
