I think an important thing to remember when discussing how fate handles its servant designs is that fate as a series was not created to be "a franchise about historical and mythological figures". The servants were simply a tool used to tell the story of fate stay night. It just so happened to be that the servants became the most popular part and so later on with other installments that became the focus. The identities of the mythological figures themselves are not even that important in fate stay night. Really only saber's story gets much attention because she's a main heroine. What I'm saying here is that fate never intended to try and be a historically/mythologically accurate portrayal. Understandably if people get into fate because of their interests of history/mythology they're likely to be disappointed. What fate ACTUALLY does is use myths as inspiration, changing and combining them to make something new, which is actually pretty similar to how many of these myths came about in the first place. It's important to keep in mind that fate is a type-moon work first and a story about historical figures second

I know okay, I get it. Everything went wrong at the end of fate zero because Angra Mainyu was summoned in the previous grail war and corrupted the grail and bla bla bla.

But hear me out!

Fate zero as a whole works better thematically if the reason for all of it going so wrong was because Diarmuid cursed the grail and everyone involved on his way out, because it would technically be Kiritsugu’s fault. Kiritsugu spent the entire war doing horrible things to take out the competition. Saber calls him out on this after all of team lancer is killed and that pushes the story of Kiritsugu realizing how he gave up all of his humanity to achieve his goals and sacrificed everyone he loved to get there when the goal wasn’t even achievable to begin with.

Plus Diarmuid isn’t entirely human and if you know anything about Fae and Irish gods, you DO NOT want to be cursed by one cause it will seriously mess you up. The ending of the grail war going wrong being because Diarmuid cursed it makes the most sense when you watch fate zero because they never once mention the grail already being corrupted in the show.

And like, I know NOW that it’s because of avenger being summoned in the previous war, but how would someone who has never played fate stay night or watched the heavens feel movies know that? Just let Diarmuid take credit. It makes Kiritsugu’s story more tragic and brings the overall theme of characters in fate zero leading themselves head first into their fates and deaths full circle.
