she wants
next time she flies in
for us all to meet up
talk about her mother
who I knew long ago
had my thing with
because she has decided
she wants to know now
who her mother was
would like to hear
the stories legends myths
that made up her get go
& I find myself disinclined
the times I tried to talk
to the one flying in
she treated me as some joe
an idiot in the crowd
never bothered to find out
why this loser hung around
the eternal friend
though her mothers divorces
make up break up’s
wild horses of growing up
being ok to be back of house
not just another hand
held out wanting wanting
to take her time & money
a fair weather fiend
oh & it wasn’t her asking
just her ‘people’ don’t’cha know

easier
life was easier then
I had certainties
in my mind
knew what was right
from wrong
then nuance
crept in
creating shades
grey from black
dirty ivory from white
wanted for me
a good woman
who knew the same
felt like me
heading into the light
life happened along
I found newer songs
ballads of red lights
ripped bed sheets
low rotten fights
& the certainties
I once held
fell to distance
leaving me
with questions
that could never
be answered
unless I took up again
those certainties I once had
