Book Review - The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell
Bernard Cornwell, well known Historical Fiction author wrote this book in 2004 and a jolly good book it is too. There are many things to like about this book for example: Rich History, Romance and Dark age Warfare- VIKINGS! The book follows a Saxon boy called Uthred, he is a Lords son raised opposite the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in the Stronghold of Bebbanburg, (modern day Bamburgh). Captured at 10 by the Danes he is taught the Viking ways and learns how to live in and love their quite diffrent culture. But Uthred knows his true place belongs with the Saxons. Set in a period of English turmoil meet well known historical figures such as Alfred the Great and read about well known battles such as Cynwit. This book is part of the Saxon Stories Series by Bernard Cornwell. Genre: Historical Fiction Positive: A book full of, well all of the above, this is a great book just read it! Negative: Personally, no problems that I have with this book come immediatly to mind.

Book Review - The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is a universally loved book and I, knowing the story quite well, decided I wanted to remind myself of the story and read it once more. Yet again it did not disappoint. A lovely Childrens classic and a truly wonderful book, purely the product of Lewis’s imagination and mind! There are some beautiful vivid scenes and if you are thinking of reading it for the first time or are wondering whether to read it again, come on! What are you waiting for? Read it!
Genre: Fantasy
Positive: Amazing, just amazing.
Negative: I have no problems with it.

Book Review - A Study In Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
A Study In Scarlet is a great book, although under the Long Stories Category of the Sherlock Holmes books, it is relatively short at approximately 120 pages.
I tend to find some people avoid these books due to their age, (being published in 1887), but I found that this does not make any difference to the quality of the story, Sherlock Holmes is funny, clever and gripping.
Of course the reward at the end of the book is you get to find out how Sherlock solved the case which is always interesting.
Genre: Mystery, Detective Fiction.
Positive: Funny, gripping and in my opinion timeless.
Negative: Very modern readers may not like it.

Sally Gardner Talk - 5th June
Yesterday, on the 5th of June, I went to a talk by the writer Sally Gardner. She suffers from highly severe dyslexia, but she was not stopped by this and Sally has published, among other titles the award winning book 'I Coriander'. She discussed what it was like writing with dyslexia, how at around the age of 12 she was deemed too stupid to learn and how she has gone on to be an award winning writer.

Flashman by George Macdonald Fraser - Review
Flashman the arch-cad and toady is an all out hilarious character, created by George MacDonald Fraser, the books romps around at a great pace and as well as the book being hilarious you also can learn from it with George Macdonald Fraser weaving his character through some of Victorian historys greatest moments.
Genre: Historical Fiction
Positive: Great all round, historically accurate.
Negative: May not appeal to those who hate cads. A tiny bit sexsist and racist due to the period of history that the book covers, but these factors do not detract from the overall book experience.
