tbh a lot of discourse around israel feels like a desire to modernize what is, in effect, a very traditional colonial issue. i cant remember now but probably rashid khalidi also made the point that if israeli had only been established maybe a century earlier, in the heyday of colonialism, it might have succeeded. but unfortunately for zionism it came around during the peak of decolonization, when arab nationalism was on the rise, and every country in the region was declaring independence and choosing self-determination.

whenever i see people try to be like—ah, its a strategic problem. ah, its a matter of financial interests. there's oil. there's trade. there's tech. its falling for israeli propaganda as the only democracy in the middle east, as the victimized civilized nation amidst its medieval arab neighbours. but they're forgetting the core colonial aspect of israel that is currently driving its entire government. a lot of liberal zionists adopt what ilan pappe called the idea of a "fantasy israel" that is progressive, a lot of leftist zionists think of israel as a socialist, egalitarian project co-opted by evil netanyahu. but in truth netanyahu is the most honest aspect of israel, that was established in the most violent and colonial of means. after this establishment the leftists and the liberals wanted to walk this back and settle comfortably into a peaceful, democratic country—but how is that possible without acknowledging the fundamental injustice upon which it was built and upon which it remains functioning? it's not. a fascist israeli is an honest israeli.

and so we keep going around in circles, because nobody wants to admit that while it has grown under the shadow of the more modern, equal-opportunity imperialism of america, israel is a relic of 19th century colonial attitudes. old thoughts, older racism, new weapons. everyone wants palestinians to have modern, democratic solutions without acknowledging that they're dealing with a very old, traditionally fascist movement lent impunity by the modern structure of the united nations, and have been for 75 years. this is why the audacity of the liberal zionist enables the brutality of the right-wing zionist. as long as you avoid the true nature of the zionist project, you delay the solutions. they need to be dragged into the 21st century so we can have a civil conversation
