Note
@missbluesunglasses: The link I gave to the rdg manga (kissmanga) seems to have been updated with 3 more chapters today.
Just thought I’d post this and let you know (in case you didn’t already know this.) ^^;
Do you know a link to the manga
Hello! Unfortunately, even though the manga only has four volumes, no one seems to have it completely translated from what I’ve seen.
You can read a little bit of it here on kissmanga.
And if you’re interested in the novel series (what the manga and the anime are based on) this lovely person right here is working on translating it. She has the first three books finished and is currently working on the fourth one. There are six books total.
I hope this helps you!

Red Data Girl and Shinto FAQ, Part 1
I’ve noticed in the Red Data Girl tag some confusion about what, exactly, is going on—apparently among Western viewers.
I’m currently a little over halfway through this quote short anime series. Here are some things I think people might be wondering about.
Oh. And by the way: spoilers for the series as a whole!
Q: Hime-gami: what/who is that?
A: Hime means “princess” and “gami” is a form of “kami” when used in some compound words for better language flow; and “kami” means many things. Most English translations are “gods” but the best translation is “the divine.”
Hime-gami, in this story, is basically a powerful kami that is royalty in some sense. Princesses pop up from time to time in Japanese folklore/mythology, such as the story of the Bamboo Princess (who is also a supernatural being).
As far as I know, RDG’s Hime-gami has no IRL Japanese folklore direct counterpart.
Q: What is the significance of the mountain shrine, mountain monks, and in fact anything related to mountains period?
A: Mountains are considered sacred in Japan, sometimes even thought of as spirits (another form of kami), often associated with other worldly powers. Things related to mountains can seem more mysterious and powerful than the things that aren’t related to mountains. Whether this is always true or not, I don’t know.
Q: What the heck is Wayuki?
A: Apparently a Tengu spirit. They are associated with birds, and in their semi-human forms can be distinguished by their long noses, somewhat like long bird beaks in length. They’re often said to be found on mountains. You can find out more about Tengu on Wikipedia. In general, don’t piss them off: they are dangerous fighters. Especially do not piss them off on a mountain.
Q: What the heck was with the empty bow shooting… Something?
A: Special priests (aka, I guess in the anime translation, monks) practice archery and often the arrows they shoot have spirit-defense properties. Sacred arrows used in ceremonies can be found in Shinto shrines.
Also an apparently empty bow in the hands of an empowered priest/monk is still indeed armed, and can fire bolts of spiritual energy that can dispel spirits. I’m really really surprised that the students in the school didn’t all recognize this. It’s a huge red flag and says: if you are a spirit, do not piss this person off.
Q: What is a shini-gami?
A: The anime has chosen to take its own special spin on types of kami (such as Hime-gami), and this is another example. “Shin” means “to die.” This is why “shine”, pronounced rather like “shin-neigh”, is such a bad threat in anime/manga. It’s the imperative, command conjugation of the verb shin, so it literally means “DIE!”
Here, and in other stories such as Death Note, shini-gami are spirits associated with death, and usually can cause other living beings to die in some manner. In the case of RDG, it is implied that dark magic involving animal sacrifice is used to create/bind shini-gami.
Q: Does dance really have magical powers?
A: In the hands of a miko, a shrine priestess (or shrine maiden), it does. There are many traditional dances performed by priests and priestesses of Shinto shrines; “kagura” refers to a family of such dances, but is not the only type of ritual dance performed.
As for what this dance magic is: Shinto has a large focus on purification rites, which a dance can be part of. If you’ve ever watched Princess Mononoke, you’ve seen what spiritual corruption can do to nature, spirits, and people (although it is important to remember that the specific effects in that movie are specific to that story). Purification rites seek to prevent and rectify such imbalances.
Have any questions? Send an ask and I’ll see if I can compile them into a Part 2!
