“TDR gets canceled and then gets good art” THE ART HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD YOU GUYS JUST HATE FUN.
okay on a serious note though, it’s totally fine to not like an art style. But to just call it ugly and blame it for the fact that the comic got canceled is such a freezing cold take. Art is so much more than “this is pretty” or “this looks realistic”. Rossmo’s art is SO stylized, full of shapes, so distinct and full of personality that I actually think it goes way over peoples heads. It’s GOOD art. you don’t have to like it, but do not discredit the work that he put in to bring this story to life.

Reading summaries of Jack Drake’s role in Tim’s life keeps making me grimace because they’re like… “Jack was neglectful & sometimes abusive. He would repeatedly regret how he treated Tim & would start to do better before reverting to old ways. Eventually he Finally Started To Become A Better Dad but was tragically murdered before that really went anywhere.”
And I’m sitting here like… no? He wasn’t becoming a better dad? He just died during an upcycle. Jack was neglectful and abusive and he had a cyclical pattern where he’d go “oh shit I should treat my kid better” but he always went back to being shitty.
The tragedy isn’t that Jack died after ~resolving to do better~ and that Tim was robbed of Finally Having A Good Dad. The tragedy is that he was a terrible fucking father in the first place. It’s the same tragedy Stephanie, Cassandra, Jason, and a bunch of other characters are suffering through.
It’s just that Tim’s dad died during the honeymoon phase of the cycle of abuse, and that colors how he’s remembered, how Tim is allowed to remember him by the narrative. Arthur Brown and Willis Todd died during the blatantly abusive phases. Jack didn’t have any better odds of becoming a better father than they did.
