I don’t shoot a lot of color but when I do choose color it is for a reason. If color is a significant part of the visual story or identity then I will make use of that. Back and white is right for my work 95% of the time but there are times where the color is an important part of the subject really adds to the overall mood of the shot or the moment. El Mirage sunsets, great for color. Builds with color as a strong part of their identity, great for color. I was determined to get at least one decent photograph of this car on film. But how do you do that on a Saturday in the busiest building of one of the most visited and talked about cars at the 2023 GNRS? This was my challenge. . Standing out while surrounded by some of the highest dollar builds by the top builders in the world is a feat of its own and a task well accepted by owner Cobe Gewertz and Bill Ganahl of South City Rod and Custom. Rarely do you see so many grown men throw hilarious tantrums over the fact that this car wasn’t as they would have built it. The offence taken by so many was much need levity to me as I could only chuckle at the strong emotions expressed on both sides of the table. To me, true art should stir emotions and generates conversation, so I guess that this most definitely fits that definition. Personally, I love it. . Now, how to get a photograph that tells the story of an event, people and the Grand National Roadster Show. I like people in my photographs as it gives the photograph a context as well as visual interest to viewers 20, 50, 100 years from now. My only answer to capture what I hoped to was a long exposure and patience. I found the angle and perspective I wanted which ended up being at an angle on the floor in the next booth over. This middle-aged dude laid on the floor for almost an hour getting both concerned and funny looks as I waited for just the right amount of people in the shot to show activity but still being able to see the entire car. As the exposures were 13-15 seconds each it was a guessing game. So with my trusty Hasselblad and Kodak Portra 400 color film (of course this had to be in color) I took my chances. I really wish that I could convey more fully in my photographs just how special some moments feel. Using only grey tones and contrast I am constantly looking for ways to plant the seed of a small story in your mind–just enough so that you can build your own experiences into that moment. How you feel, what you heard, what the vibe was is nearly impossible to capture in a single photograph so I am asking a lot both of myself and of you. This moment was special and if you were lucky enough to be there, you know. If you weren’t, you missed out on something really special. The Story Behind the Photo: December 2022, Flabob Airport. . My photographs would not be possible without the help, encouragement and support of friends. Mel and his team have created something indescribable in words with The Race of Gentlemen. Mel pours every part of his passion and soul into creating these events with a zealous reckless abandon. With every card on the table and so much to lose he still pushes forward and makes things happen that very, very few people have the drive and, likely insanity, to do. TROG at The Flabob Airport in December of 2022 was one of these magical moments of everything coming together in a way that made it feel like a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The people, the light, the cars and motorcycles, and the weather was quite literally picture perfect. Surrounded by historic planes and treated to the music of flying pistons it was perfection. . The second part of this surreal experience we running into the legendary Photographer, Mr. David Burnett. I have been an admirer for years and had the opportunity to interview him for a magazine story a few years back, but we had never met in person. I have been influenced by many who have gone before and Mr. Burnett has definitely been a strong part of my perspective with my phtoographs so being able to spend some time talking, observing and learning from one of the best was a huge moment for me. . Which brings me to this photograph. This was shot on a 4x5” Graflex SLR with the sun directly behind the bottom of the airplanes engine. I was straining to get the camera high enough so that the sun wouldn’t shine directly into the lens. I was going to post this shot before the end of the year because it was such a spectacular sunset and closing moment at TROG Flabob blah, blah, blah, but, well, you know how it goes. So, happy 2023 and here’s to many more happenings just as amazing as this one was!! . This was shot on 4x5 film near the closing of TROG at the Flabob Airport last December. I remember this exact moment so well because I almost didn’t make this photograph because I was so enjoying the moment. It was absolutely picture perfect – with the sun setting, the palm trees waving, the sounds and smells of drag racing and the absolutely perfect vibe – and I was loving it. I had in my hands my 1930ish Graflex SLR and the sun was shining almost directly into my lens. Lenses this old are not coated to fight glare so I thought that there was very little chance that this photograph would come out anyway but at the last minute I quickly focussed and pressed the shutter release. As Wayne Gretzky famously said “You miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take” and I am glad that I took the chance to take this one. . Thank you, Mel and the entire TROG team again for making this happen. I don’t think that all of the people who works so hard to make The Race of Gentlemen as awesome as it is get enough thanks. So, thank you, to each and every one of you that make this event happen. The hours, the days, the weeks and the months of thankless work don’t go unnoticed. We appreciate you. Please, if you see me at the next TROG, stop me and say hello and let me buy you a beer or three. . . On another note, we as photographers are so lucky to have a chance to tell this story (thank you Mel!). It was awesome seeing so many shooters that I look up to out and making their magic. You all push me to be a better photographer. This also makes me look for moments that tell a story that are either just before or just after “the moment”. I love this kind of shot because there are multiple layers to the story. You can imagine the sounds of the hopped up motors just out of camera view on either side, the smells of spent gasoline, Lyle has just sent them on their way, the announcer is calling the action live and the crowd is anxiously watching – a story, within a story, within a story if you like. Or perhaps it’s just me overanalyzing a lucky shot. But, I love it anyway.
