He smelled it before he heard it. The tang of decaying flesh was heavy in the air, as is common when dealing with the Drowe. But Zieg knew this was going to be a radically different encounter the moment he had whisked into the wood. It had fortressed itself deep within the abandoned mines, littering the entrance with the bones and remains of those foolish enough to cross its path. When it finally revealed itself to the old mage, he had to stop for just a moment to take it in. This Drowe had somehow come across the skull of a hippo- an animal he hadn’t seen before. But the tusks gave the beast away, and Zieg felt his ears pull back as the creature bellowed at him. 

He pulled his staff quickly, but he knew he was in for the fight of his life.
