BILLIE EILISH 2018
With almost all of her ‘Where’s My Mind’ US tour dates sold out, this Los Angeles native has accomplished what many artists could only dream of doing at the tender age of 16. The spunky youngster, professionally known as Billie Eilish, has reached many significant milestones as an artist and already has an extensive resume under her belt. Her music has been remixed by artist such as Astronomyy, Blackbear, and Sofi Tukker, she has collaborated with artists such as Vince Staples, her single entitled ‘Bored’ was featured on the soundtrack of Netflix’s hit TV show ‘13 Reasons Why’, she was crowned one of Apple Music’s ‘Up Next’ artists, and she’s performed on talk shows such as The Late Late Show with James Corden (all within the time span of about two years. Amazing, if you ask me!). Because of her persona and the level of maturity of her songs, many are surprised by Billie’s actual age. In an interview with her brother for Fuse, Billie explains that you can write songs from your imagination to explain what you have felt, may be feeling, or what you think you might feel about something; you don’t actually have to go through things in order to write a song about them. Billie’s philosophy on music is deviant from basic mainstream music which is all about love and heartbreak and is wise way to think about writing music. This is exactly what I love about Billie, she isn’t afraid to be herself; she knows what she wants and she gets it. In her song COPYCAT, she preaches to her fans, young and old, that it’s okay to be different. She encourages her listeners to be who they are, to think for themselves, and to not be clones of each other.
Sporting her famous monochromatic looks (this time in all white), Billie rocked the stage while performing songs from her debut ep, ‘dont smile at me’. Accompanied by her brother, Finneas O’Connell on guitar and keyboard, and her drummer, Andrew Marshall, the trio performed Billie’s hit songs (such as ‘bellyache’ and ‘my boy’) and debuted a new song titled ‘when the party’s over’. It’s shocking for most to learn that this is only Billie’s second tour because she owns the stage like a seasoned professional who’s been touring for years. Her set kept the crowd going from beginning to end. Billie’s concert kicks off with Finneas and Andrew making it rain billion dollar Billie bills on the crowd with cash cannons, making the crowd go crazy (side note: this reminded me of G-Eazy’s set during Coachella ‘16 where he threw dollar bills into the crowd!), and concludes with fans cheering her name for more. FINNEAS also made a debut and sang his song ‘New Girl’. The amount of love and respect Billie and Finneas have for each other is endearing and the fact that Finneas wrote Billie’s breakout song, ‘ocean eyes’ makes their relationship even more adorable. Their song gained momentum and became popular in a very natural way, with people genuinely liking and sharing their song. This is a very rare and remarkable feat for an artist who isn’t already signed to a record label. In an interview with Vogue, Billie describes her feelings as “over the moon” when ‘ocean eyes’ began to gain thousands of plays on SoundCloud. Billie Eilish is most definitely on the rise and is one to keep an eye on; so much is in store for this rising artist!

JUDAH & THE LION
With a mix of rap, pop, folk, and rock Judah & the Lion has created a unique sound different from any music you may find on the radio. So, it is difficult to place them in any one genre of music. You may have heard their song “Take it All Back” played on fm949, where it has topped the local charts for months. The nonconventional band consists of Judah Akers as lead vocalist, Spencer Cross on drums, Brian Macdonald on the mandolin, Dylan Oglesby on guitar and accordion, Daniel Weatherby on piano, and Nate Zuercher on banjo.
The band does an excellent job at grabbing your attention and getting the whole crowd dancing, especially front man Judah Akers. Akers brings so much energy to the stage that I only got a handful of pictures of him with both feet on the stage floor. The band incorporates lots of stints such as a synchronized dance sequences and, in the realm of Twenty One Pilots (whom Judah and the Lion has opened for during 21P’s EMØTIØNAL RØADSHØW earlier this year), they pull their t-shirts over their heads and play their instruments blind during a song from their set. If you would like to see Judah & the Lion, they will be back in San Diego at the House of Blues on February 9th, 2018 on their own headlining tour.

SWMRS & THE INTERRUPTERS 2017
SWMRS (pronounced swimmers) is a four-piece band of boys from Oakland, California. The band formerly known as Emily’s Army (est. 2004) concluded their co-headlining west coast tour with the Interrupters at the House of Blues San Diego last Sunday, October 29th and will continue the east coast portion of their tour at the end of November. The quartet consists of brothers Max and Cole Becker (lead vocals and lead guitar, lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day’s son Joey Armstrong (drums), and Sebastian (aka Seb) Mueller (bass).
Though co-headlining wtih The Interrupters, the majority of the audience was in attendance for SWMRS. Everyone, from young skate punk teenagers to adults well into their 50’s, shared the dance floor and moshed together. Moshing may be intimidating but this group of fans are extremely caring and will pick you right back up if you fall (however, you may still go home with a couple of bruises as battle scars). This and respecting one another are a couple of the rules Cole, lead singer of SWMRS, goes over at the beginning of the concert. The band likes to appoint social issues, encourages their audience to think for themselves, and make a difference in the world.
I have seen the boys perform four times once at the Ché Café, the Observatory North Park, the Irenic, and then this last time at the HOB. Every time I see them play I make new memories (I crowd surfed for the first time at their show at the Observatory) and I always end up meeting amazing people. If you attend more than one of SWMRS concerts you are sure to see some familiar faces because, one, their fan base is incredibly dedicated and, two, because their concerts are always insane amounts of fun. From playing small 100 person venues to selling out venues, being able to watch the band rise in popularity is a great feeling. Most recently, SWMRS’s hit song “Figuring it Out” was featured in a Taco Bell commercial!

PORTUGAL. THE MAN 2017
As the saying goes, third times the charm. There's nothing like seeing one of your favorite bands over and over again.
Recently releasing their latest album Woodstock with their hit single Feel It Still, making Billboard's top 20 hot 100, Portugal. The Man is taking the music world by storm. Rising in 2004 from nonetheless Sarah Palin's suburban town in Wasilla, Alaska, this indie alternative rock n' roll quintet consists of John Gourley as leading vocals, Zachary Carother on the bass, Kyle O'Quin on the keyboard, Eric Howk on guitar, and Jason Sechrist on drums. Not only does this band have insane instrumentals, but their production is transformative with blue and purple hues, putting you in a beautiful trance. Playing a sell out show in Oceanside, California for fm94.9 Indie Jam; this has been one of the largest fan base festivals I've been to with people of all ages covered in merchandise.
Watching Portugal. The Man grow from opening for Cage The Elephant to headlining their own tour has been one wild ride. I had the pleasure of meeting them earlier this year at their show at the North Park Observatory in San Diego and all I have to say is, what cool f*cking lads. Decked out in "Lord's of Portland" gear, vintage vibes, and white sneakers, these guys sure know their way around style. Without a doubt you are sure to meet some rad people at their show, including the band themselves, as they enjoy sparking conversations with their fans. Whether you are a new or old fan, their setlist is composed of songs from all of their eight albums and you are sure to have a gold ol' time.

Bambi

HUNNY 2017
Having a similar sound to bands like Vinyl Theatre, Smallpools, and The Wombats; Hunny has relatable lyrics about love and life. This band has an eccentric vibe to their sound, incorporating indie, pop, and punk fusions. The band consists of leading man Jason Yarger on vocals, Greg Horne on the bass, Kevin Gerimmett on the keyboard, Joey Anderson on the drums, and Jack Goldstein and Jake Munk on the guitar.
Decked out in sequenced jackets and retro baby blue blazers. Southern California’s own, Hunny recently released their new album, “Windows I,” after their 2016 hit single “Vowels (And the Importance of Being Me).” The sextet packed their bags and made an appearance in San Diego, California while supporting Bad Suns on their Outskirts Of Paradise Tour ‘17. Making a big impression, the venue was packed with people of all ages causing a ripple effect; with crazy fans at the barricade and silent jammers by the sound booth. Originating from the Greater Los Angeles Area, the band was formed in Newbury Park, but you can find Hunny on Spotify, Soundcloud, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and at the Soma Side Stage on August 31st in San Diego, California.

SAINT MOTEL 2017
Theres nothing like classic indie pop to make you smile, with their amazing stage presence and crowd interaction, Los Angeles natives, Saint Motel, made a short stop in Oceanside, California for their 2017 fall tour. The upbeat band consists of AJ Jackson on lead vocals, Aaron Sharp on guitar, Dak Lerdamornpong on the bass, and Greg Erwin on the drums.
This was our second time seeing this lively band and it was better than I remembered. Decked out in Saint Motel merchandise, fans lined up hours before their set. Lacking a photo pit, we dove right into the crowd and got the chance to meet amazing individuals. With a unique fusion of funk rock in their music, Saint Motel played a breathtaking show, uniting those under the golden skies. From solo concert goers to entire families, the whole crowd was jumping to the beat. So overall, the next time Saint Motel makes a stop in your town, make sure to mark your calendars!

FRANZ FERDINAND 2017
The Scottish rock band originates from Glasgow, United Kingdom, with Alex Kapranos as lead vocals, Paul Thomson on the drums, Dino Bardot on the guitar, Bob Hardy on the bass, and Julian Corrie, also known as Miaoux Miaoux on the keyboards. With multiple UK top 20 hits, the band headed across the pond to sunny San Diego, California. With a mixture of vibes, new and old, leading man, Alex Kapranos sure knows how to get the crowd going. The crowd consisted of crazy teenage fans to those who were there from the beginning. Emulating something out the movies, with a 360 view, I saw smiles, laughs, and new friendships forming. With hundreds of fans rallied at the beautiful beach in Oceanside, California, Franz Ferdinand played a wild show that was one for the books.
