it actually hadn't occured to me until just now but love & betrayal are @ the site of every villain's spiral. like. "Shifu had to destroy what he had created. But how could he?" vs. "They loved you so much that having to send you away killed them." vs. "I loved him like a brother, and he betrayed me."
it's super neat how love isn't only one of the major themes of the series but also a vicious motivator too

say what you will about still star-crossed but it's notable shonda went from a show with a dark skinned lead and colorblind casting to the bee show having white leads and race conscious casting in the worst way possible.
Yeeeeeeah, but the show being (somewhat) better on a casting level doesn't make it any less poor in terms of quality. To be very fair, Shonda did not RUN either of these shows, but she seems to be as involved as she wants to be and sets at minimum a cultural tone and expectation with her protegees (who I believe remain largely white).
Ultimately, my main nod to SSC is that it offered Lashana Lynch a paycheck; and I love Lashana Lynch, though I would love even more for her to have jobs that are more along the lines of The Woman King and No Time to Die versus SSC and The Marvels.

hate how scared modern liberal movies are of making characters of color into antagonists of any sort? like i know it depends on what kind of story you want to tell, but if it's a "colorblind" story that's just like, "regency era, but diverse" or whatever and all of the people of color are the kind supporting cast, just go fuck yourself I'm sorry

some incomprehensible thoughts abt songbirds and snakes bc i have a lot to say !!
- went into it knowing snow was a terrible person 60 yrs later but understanding his history and what led up to it all—
- reaper was the best character. his name is kinda ironic though, cause he was reaped. but when the other tributes died and he carried them all to be laid to rest together, along with ripping down the capitol flag and covering them with it while staring into the cameras — i find that that was a much more powerful display of defiance than lucy gray’s singing. using the oppressor’s flag to cover the children they delight in watching fight to the death. and rather than seeing the tributes as enemies (which, technically, they were), reaper, at their deaths, risked his own life to carry them all to the rocks and give them a proper place to rest (rue parallel i see you): seeing them as those who didn’t have a choice (to be labelled “district,” to survive each in their own way, etc.) - a way the capitol would never understand. he went into the games aggressive and intimidating, but died while still keeping his humanity (i would argue lucy gray did not but)
- something something the parallel of tigris and grandmother’s reactions to coriolanus on reaping day // their reactions to him in the end as dr. gaul’s understudy (grandmother calling him handsome both times while tigris went from happy and excited for him, standing to embrace him to “you look like your father” while sitting, looking wary of his change. also the colours from white —> blood red. incredible)
- tigris. i love hunter schafer ++ viola davis as dr. gaul
- the roses…
- snow + poison and finnick’s speech in mockingjay about snow using poison on his enemies with sores in his mouth that won’t ever heal (physical sores, reminders of his sins, and metaphorical ones - lies?)
- my ex-girlfriend lucy gray introduced me to this plant katniss before she betrayed me and 65 yrs later this girl from district 12 named katniss starts a revolution against me? and does her revolution bow? coincidence,,
- cheater w rat poison and the handkerchief
- lucy gray saw his change when they were in the cabin. saw through his lie of his “old self” dying to be there with her. she ran. he goes mad. he shoots her
- i can smell the “hear me out—s” and the toxic bf coriolanus x reader fics already

how people are still surprised that the academy continues to play in the faces of black filmmakers and performers is beyond me lol. like y’all saw what they did to beyonce w the grammys and saw what they did to danielle deadwyler/viola davis/GPB and still held out hope that they’d act different when oscar’s awards night actually came?? n they’re gonna keep ignoring us so long as we keep tuning in hoping that shit will be different.

today i watched "the ballad of songbirds and snakes". i'm already a big hunger games fan having read all the books including the one this movie was based on, and this is honestly a stellar adaption of an already good book.
firstly, the acting and casting in this movie is amazing. everyone's performances were great and it really elevated the story, especially for viola davis' dr gaul. the story itself, while i was already familiar with it, was also compelling - very nuanced and extensive with its display of resistance, propaganda, and dystopia in a way that's all too realistic. the adaption was faithful and clean, and there weren't any annoying changes.
the cinematography was OK, but i really liked the symbolism at the end with the rainbow, lady justice and snow falling, even if it was a bit in your face. the characters were all stellar. it was a bit long, yea, but it did good with all the time it had and didn't have any scenes that felt truly unnecessary. in the end i really liked it :) i'd give a 4/5. i really need to reread this series too *w*

Ik both are young n popular actors bt theres no need for ppl to always do Tom vs Timmy, esp with them being friends. They r both doing very well, I would say sum of the top yung actors for their ages, bt r just different actors prob striving for different goals. Their both white, i promise they will b ok lol. Both have time to b great n live up to their full potential, they r only in their 20s yall 😅
I def agree.... I don't get the Tom/Timmy comparisons all the time. They're buddies! They def respect each other in the industry as well. 😊
Like you said, I think they're both different actors w/different goals as well. Not every actor has the same goal, and not every actor even wants to be in certain roles.
I actually find Tom's filmography to be way more diverse than Timmy's (just being honest), but I can see why some fans compare Timmy's career to Leo's because Leo's career has been pretty specific over the years, and not AS diverse (imo). Again, every actor just simply does roles that personally call to them, so if Leo, Timmy, Tom, etc. are choosing these roles, it's because on SOME level, the role called to them, or, they just wanted to work with a great director/actors, etc.
But yea, they definitely have a LOT more time to flourish. Like you said, they're only in their 20's. Some people don't get a huge career in Hollywood until their 30's and sometimes even 40s and 50's!
Viola Davis (for example) didn't really start getting "big" in Hollywood until she was almost in her mid-40's! And she's a Julliard-trained ACTRESS.
So the journey isn't the same for everyone. And unlike many women in the industry, MEN are still acting and getting awesome roles well into their 60's, so Tom and Timmy (et al) are gonna be just fine. 😊 It's usually us WOMEN in the HW industry who have the "Ticking Time Clock" before they're viewed as "undesirable" for certain roles after they reach a certain age. 😒🙄

currently reading Viola Davis recounting her love story w her husband Julius in her memoir
I just wanna say hey GOD ITS ME AGAIN (this line is actually hilarious bc of the context within the book okay lol I laughed bye)
She just said “It was love in the best sense of the word.” AND THAT “I prefer to think that we were just ecstatically happy and that happiness brought out the child in both of us.” Oh okay imma cry I love humans
[this is probably my third edit]
“With this chapter of my life, I didn’t want to dwell on little Viola running away anymore. I wanted to run toward joy, hand in hand with Julius.” PLEASE AWWW
Okay one more
“You don’t have to live in the past. I found that not only did I have fight in me, I had love. by the time we clicked, I had had enough therapy and enough friendship and enough beautiful moments to know what love is and what I wanted my life to feel and look like.” 😭

y'know I really do feel sorry for the younger 20 somethings (and anyone in general tbh) that are suffering from tiktok brain rot around "anti-aging" advice. like the other day, I had a review/reaction video from I think james walsh the beauty influencer in my fb watch feed, where he was reviewing/debunking the bs anti-aging advice that people give on tiktok.
one of the videos he reacted to was from some 21yo beauty influencer or some rando idk, I'm not on there. her piece of advice was to "always sleep on your back like a vampire to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and crows feet. that's how I stay looking so fresh... even though yes I'm 21 which contributes quite a bit but still. be disciplined about sleeping on your back ALL NIGHT, EVERY NIGHT to get the PERFECT SKIN!!!" like im sorry, what???? you're 20 fucking one (21). why the FUCK do you feel compelled to give "anti-aging" advice??? why the fuck do you even care about anti-aging stuff when you're like at least 10 YEARS away from any considerable signs of aging beginning to slowly show??? get the fuck out of the house and enjoy nature or some shit. instead of lamenting that you're "getting so old by the minute so I MUST ELIMINATE laugh lines and crows feet even though im still only 21."
"but but. it's in the name of self care." I can hear some people say. "but but. it shows that as a woman you take high self-care maintenance of yourself if you begin EARLY with seeking out remedies for and eliminating the signs of aging" other people are saying. and finally: "but but. look at zendaya (or some other young 20 something movie star or TT influencer like idek mikayla nougeira). she's promoting revlon anti-aging serums! it can't be that bad!!!"
I raise to people with the first response that: no. having some 21yo condescend to you that you MUST fight to stay younger and sleep uncomfortably on your back stiffly like a vampire is NOT self care. starting to "fight" the signs of aging is NOT being a high maintenance woman in your early 20s. it's just being fucking insanely obsessed with youth..... when like... you're still young as fuck. like yes I made jokes about feeling ancient and old and w/e when i was 21.... but that doesnt mean that i became weirdly focused on trying to eliminate any crows feet and laugh lines....... that weren't even fucking on my face yet!!!!!! or cellulite that's on my legs.
moreover, for zendaya or other beauty influencers that may promote anti-aging products. they get paid either 10s of thousands of dollars or hundreds of thousands or maybe even up to possibly millions of dollars for promoting some bs estee lauder/revlon etc etc anti-age defying gravity super plumping and hydrating hyaluronic acid and idek retonoid vitamins C and E serum fuck shit.... against you, a random 21yo from god knows where in the US (usually).... like idek calabasis or houston or whatever the fuck with fuck knows how many low count followers (im assuming but probs not idek and idc)....
the people who I'll listen to about aging are people who have actually lived a life. like jamie lee curtis. like sandra oh. like leslie jones. like viola davis. idek just people who have ACTUALLY lived a life and are happy with aging, i guess (even if yes, they're famous and kinda unrelateable anyway). not some fucking stuck up rude asf early 20 something whose watched 3 fucking antiaging brain rot videos on tiktok and NOW thinks that they're the utmost expert on anti-aging hacks. and this is coming from someone whose nearly 30. fucking embrace getting older in your 20s. cherish it and use it wisely.
I say this as someone who, in 2020 at 25, nearly fucking died twice after a massive surgery. why the fuck should I give a fuck about crows feet???? laugh lines (ie lines of fucking J O Y)???? my cellulite??? when I'm 28 this year??? (*cue these TT brain rot girlies* EEEEWWWWW OLD HAG WHO DOESNT DO GOOD HIGH MAINTENANCE SELF CARE TO FIGHT THE SIGNS OF AGING EEEEWWWW!!!!!) I'm finally healthy again.... but realisitcally, YOU ARE the one that needs to look in the mirror and realise that being young and looking young ain't that crash hot, really. wise the fuck up and delete tiktok and escape anti-aging brain rot.... when you're still a kid (in a sense) stumbling about in your early 20s... stop giving a fuck about useless shit you can't avoid.
