A03 meme

A03 meme time, except I've been writing and posting fanfic to the internet since before A03. And before fanfiction.net. And before Geocities. And before the World Wide Web. There's fic of mine with ASCII doodle illustrations somewhere out there where the wild BBSes once roamed…I was tagged by @moveslikebucky; thanks Buckie, here goes. <3

how many works do you have on Ao3? 54. (and yes if we added in all the fanfic outside of A03 it'd be a larger number but I can't be bothered to consolidate it all)

what’s your total Ao3 word count? 341,744, which is better than I was expecting, yay.

what fandoms do you write for? At the moment it's just Good Omens, but there's been a lot of Dragon Age, some Lord of the Rings, and way back in the day there was Harry Potter and a lot of anime. I am toying with dipping my toe back in LotR, there's a thing I wrote ages ago that's entirely finished and just needs editing and I've been meaning to get it out there for ages. It's long though, so that'd be a commitment.

what are your top five fics by kudos? What Custom Strictly Divided (507) Like an Echo Far Away (415) (this one wasn't in the top five last week when I first started writing this post! So I think @mielpetite gets all the credit for boosting it with amazing fanart) What Comes From Your Hand (402) Give Me Your Illusions (346) Nightswimming (307)

do you respond to comments? Yep! Sometimes just with "Thanks!" or hearts but I try to. Though they get away from me sometimes and then I do a bunch all at once.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Definitely Warmaiden, which is my "What if Éowyn got the One Ring?" fic, from an idea that occurred to me one day and wouldn't leave. Clearly that doesn't end well for her, or anyone. From GO fandom it's probably Silent Night, which I still want to expand into a larger fic to be a set with Give Me Your Illusions. Someday, someday.

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of them! But for the happiest I'd say Swan Lake Revised, cowritten with @mostlyjustgoose. And if we ever get part three up it'll be even more happy. And smutty. Very smutty.

Do you get hate on fics? Very rarely. I've been lucky there.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Oh here's the irony. I used to do a lot a lot a LOT of online roleplaying and mygod I wrote smut. So much. So. Much. I don't do as much rp these days but even so the threads I have going are still frequently pure filth. But in fic, much less so, even though I want to. Why it all gets channeled into rp and not as much into my fanfic I do not know. Honestly I want to write a lot more of it. Smut forever!!

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Sometimes, when I have a good idea. But the craziest one I ever wrote, ages ago, was a pure crackfic for my 21st birthday, where I imagined a bizarre party for myself in which LOADS of fictional characters (mostly from anime) showed up so I could make them interact in wacky ways. It was utterly ridiculous but amused me. Making all the characters voiced by Megumi "She's Everywhere!!" Hayashabara meet up and wonder why they all sound alike, for example. Also I wish I'd written an Artemis Fowl breaks into Gringotts to rob it fic before I became so disillusioned with both Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter. Heigh ho.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yep. It was impressive how lazy the person was about it too, they stole all the html as well. Someone brought it to my attention pretty quickly.

Have you ever had a fic translated? Twice, yes. Into Portuguese, as I remember.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Hi @mostlyjustgoose, I adore you, please co-write things with me forever. <3 Our baby is Unusual Strings, a reverse omens AU love story, and it's SO. CLOSE. to being done. So close. Aughhhh. I love our angel!Crowley and demon!Aziraphale so, so much.

What’s your all time favorite ship? Aziraphale and Crowley, Faramir and Éowyn, Hiccup and Astrid. Don't make me choose between those three, my head will explode.

What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Shut up shut up I will finish all of them ALL OF THEM I SAY…sigh. Beauty and the Battousai. Though I should probably mention A Demon in the Dreaming and The Queen Bee. (they're plotted and outlined and parts are written aaahhh come on ADHD meds help me out here)

What are your writing strengths? Dialogue, definitely. I'm good at putting humour into things. Got compared to Patricia Wrede once and honestly, life goal achieved there. I can do memorable phrases and descriptions and edit well.

What are your writing weaknesses? What is plot. Why does it hate me. Why are my original characters one-dimensional cardboard. What is worldbuilding and how do I do it without getting stalled into paralysis. Baaaah. This is why my original novel will never be finished and I keep running back to fanfic instead.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Hoo boy contentious subject! I love reading it so long as it's translated somewhere in the footnotes, I'd be happy to write it if I knew other languages, the question of whether it should be italicized or not has apparently Officially been settled by The Publishing Industry on the side of Not.

First fandom you wrote for? Oh gosh I think it was the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The first that ever got shown to other people was Ranma 1/2 though.

Favorite fic you’ve written? It's still What Custom Strictly Divided. Though Unusual Strings comes very close.

Day Ten: A fandom character I want to play, but haven’t yet

Okay, listen yall: WHY ARE WE SLEEP ON THE TOLKIEN UNIVERSE IN THE RPC? Like that world is so well developed, why is it not more popular??? Anyway, that’s probably why Éowyn’s a character I never got to play, since the Tolkien universe is so underrated. But literally the first time I watch the LOTR movies, she was instantly my favorite character. And everytime I rewatch those movies, I get more and more muse for her character? Maybe I love her because she’s a woman yet she refuses to to as women would in that verse and just... goes to the battlefield and is amazingly epic? Who knows, but she remains the one character I would di to play.

4. Have you made any outright changes to the canon material in order to write your muse the way you wanted (entire scenes you chose to omit, chapters you say never existed, things you assume were never said, etc.)?

The answer to this will depend on what you consider “canon”. As for me, I don’t care what anyone else says, it’s not canon if it’s not established by JRRT himself

And that canon is the one I try to follow to the best of my ability.

If you consider the movies canon, well, my Aragorn is very different from that. The differences are all book-based but for those who need a reminder here’s the most important ones:

Attitude towards elves and humans. Aragorn does not have a dismissive view towards the race of men, and actually believes they have a future (fourth age will be the age of men, whether for good or for bad). If he had such issues in the past (and well, he probably did!), he’d managed to resolve them during the events of LotR.

Attitude towards kinghood. Aragorn was in fact more than happy to accept his heritage. This is book canon; my headcanon adds that he did have second thoughts sometimes but never to the point of trying to run away from it. He’d hoped and feared it at the same time, but his sense of duty prevailed.

Plus, book canon Elrond set Aragorn’s kingship over Gondor and Arnor as a prerequisite for letting him marry Arwen, which was an additional motivation for him (and for Arwen to support his ascension to the throne :P)

Relationship with Arwen and Elrond. According to the books (LotR appendices) Arwen and Aragorn were betrothed when he was about 49 years old - several decades before the quest for the ring. At the time of that story, this topic wasn’t disputed. This is also why I am reluctant to RP with movie based Elronds, as they are incompatible with how I view Aragorn and Elrond’s relationship.

Also, Narsil got reforged and named Andúril before the fellowship left Rivendell.

After the battle of Hornburg/visiting Saruman in Isengard. The movies don’t mention it but as Theoden, Aragorn and the others were leaving Isengard, they were met by the grey company - Aragorn’s kinsmen (as well as Elrond’s sons, Elladan and Elrohir) who had set out to help him in the war.

Dead army. I suppose more of a King of the Dead thing more than an Aragorn thing but that scene where the king complains “that sword has been broken”? Yeah, not a thing. The dead army was actually rather relieved to finally get the chance to fulfil their oath and be free.

5. What is an aspect of your muse’s canon material or canon existence that you never had the opportunity to explore but really want to?

Oh boy. There’s a whole bunch of stuff the canon hardly speaks of but I’d like to get to explore! Including:

- post-war chilling/building up friendship with Éowyn, Éomer, Imrahil or Faramir (or perhaps all at the same time)

- various kinds of threads with Arwen, both pre and post war

- interactions with the other Dúnedain, eg. when Aragorn’s only just learned of his heritage and comes to live among them for the first time, or when he comes back from Echtelion’s service and is filthy rich by their standards

- interactions with Elrond when Estel was a kid, probably mostly dialogue-based

- possibly interacting with some of Thorin’s company during their quest (Estel was 10 at the time and lived in Rivendell)

- idk something with Imrahil and/or child Théoden during Aragorn’s service as Thorongil?

also you know what I’m just gonna copy that thing I wrote in my drafts wayyy before i went on that long hiatus and never published

- Interactions with his mother, both childhood and later, preferably plotted

- Tiny bby Aragorn was brough to Rivendell and is not coping well with the ‘scary’ new environment. With an Elrond muse

- various stuff w/Elrond’s sons (together or individually), maybe they’re teaching him something? Or they’re hunting orcs together or something more complex [if the latter it should be plotted]

- interactions with Arwen from before [maybe including] the time he confessed his feelings to her (or maybe she noticed and wanted to be clear about it? the more likely option imo)

- interactions with Arwen during their time in Lórien

- anything with Arwen tbh as long as it’s canon plausible

- interactions with the other rangers when he’s young and inexperienced and has to adapt to the ranger lifestyle etc. [plotted]

- interactions with the other rangers after he returns from that 20+ year long absence (that is when he served under Thengel & Echtelion), is probably filthy rich [for their standards] and wow there’s so many stuff to tell about what happenned all those years, both from them and from him

- interactions with child!Théoden during Thorongil’s service in Rohan

- interactions with Denethor during Thorongil’s service in Gondor. I need to see the sass (even if it’s just crack.. even better)

- I know many Lego-muns like to follow the idea that Legolas and Aragorn met soon after botfa as the movies suggest, but consider this: a version in which they meet during Aragorn’s first visit to Mirkwood (which I think is during his search for Gollum)

- the not-so-fun journey with Gollum from Dead Marshes to Mirkwood

- something shortly before the fellowship sets out from Rivendell (with anyone who was there, fellowship or not)

- Meeting the hobbits at the Prancing Pony, after the war (with or without Frodo)

- Meeting ol’ Butterbur after the war [probably most awkward for him and most amusing for Aragorn tbh]

- the scenes that the books mentioned, but didn’t go into detail (with whoever was involved; basically the off-screen stuff)

- the palantír scene with Halbarad (and maybe Sauron)

- meeting his dad in the afterlife not really canon but sheeesh

- tbh one of my biggest wishlist things is (are) many short, ‘unimportant’ interactions. Perhaps with some random people he met on his journeys, talked to like once, and never saw them again kinda stuff? Or short interactions that might’ve been common (with the same person I mean) but never evolved into anything big or important. Interaction with the people who he never got to know very intimately, and neither did they know him that well. Seriously though I’d really love such things, even if said characters only appear as NPCs in other threads..

Silence fell upon them as they stood on the balcony, looking towards the East, even though there was not much to see there anymore. Yet they were still out there, next to each other, perhaps taking a step closer every day. As time went by, Éowyn, still with the darkness in her heart, slowly began to spend more time with Faramir. She would not say that she had grown fond of him, as her heart was still aching for someone else, she rather got used to his presence.

She only noticed it this afternoon, as they were standing on the balcony and none of them spoke a word. Yet this silence did not make her feel uncomfortable. In fact, it was something rather calming. As it started getting colder, she instinctively shifted closer to him. Not long after that she felt him shifting closer to her and he gently rested his head on her shoulder. She startled a little as she felt his hair against her cheeks, but once the surprise was gone, it did not feel bad at all. A small smile touched her lips, and she, without saying a word, leaned her head against his.

Mai has always been my soul during the ATLA saga, I honestly adore her to bits though I must say that I know very little. I’ve not read the comics or anything of the sort but it’s really good to see that you are so passionate about her, and your threads with her are so wonderful to read. I always adored her relationship with Zuko and wished there was more for us to see, though now that there’s rp I have that wish fulfilled I’m just glad someone picked up Mai, she deserves all of the love.

I literally could put your Geralt here, or your Éowyn or your Aragorn tbh. You have almost this staple where people can very quickly understand that it’s you there, be it in terms of graphics/edits (which are so inspiring and so beautiful), but also your writing is so beautiful to read! Everytime that I get a meme reply from you I always read and re read because it is a beautiful thing, like an early Christmas. Being able to write characters that are so unapologetic about their way of being, and standing by their faults even knowning that interactions will be hard is something that I truly value. I have a few muses that are hard to interact and it’s always a struggle of having to be like ‘should I warn them that this can turn very quickly into a shit show? will they be mad if I let my muse reply to them as she really would without me filtering it?’. It’s always a struggle but I’m glad that you remain faithful to her, your characterization is incredible :’)

Height: Um, about 164cm if I recall correctly, give or take a couple of centimetres.

Orientation: Pansexual.

Nationality: Singaporean, though I currently reside in Australia.

Favourite fruit: Mango.

Favourite season: Probably late autumn or early winter. Cool enough for me to comfortably wear my turtlenecks and light coats and scarves and jauntily-posed hats, but not so cold that I’m shivering. 

Favourite scent: Sandalwood, roses, jasmine, the fragrant scent of spices in South Indian cooking, freshly-baked goods, my partner’s hair...

Favourite colour: Red.

Favourite animal: Cats.

Coffee, tea or hot chocolate: Milo is actually my favourite but it’s not an option here. :P Tea and hot chocolate. I’m not a coffee person.

Favourite fictional character: Oof, that’s a hard one. Hermione Granger, Nanny Ogg, Éowyn, Glorfindel, Remus Lupin, Death (either Discworld or Sandman, they’re both awesome), Aragorn, Cheery Littlebottom, Mazikeen... the list goes on, really.

Number of blankets you sleep with: It varies according to season, but either 1 or 2. 

Dream trip: Egypt (I’ve already been there with family, but I want to return for longer, with my partner this time), New Zealand (ditto; also, when my family and I went, it was in 2004 and the LotR sets were down. I really want to bring my partner and visit the Hobbiton set in Matamata, in full costume), and Britain (I have never been).

Oh man. I mean, I’m almost always wanting to write every muse! I think I’m always itching for people to rp with Ophelia. She’s an old favorite of mine, and I always have so much fun with her. I used to run a blog that only had her on it (@pray-you-love-remember) and I miss that level of attention, I guess.

11. is there another muse you’ve been thinking of adding or writing for? who?

There is!! I’ve been thinking a lot about adding Marya Bolkonska from Tolstoy’s War & Peace. I’m going to be giving her a test drive in a thread with @ashencreature soon, actually. 

And I’ve had a Peter Pevensie blog for aaages, I’m trying to decide whether to add him here or leave him on his own blog.

Oh man!! For some of these, there actually are blogs for them, but I’m rather shy and bad at reaching out.

Ophelia – Hamlet, hands down. There’s a really lovely Hamlet I used to rp with quite a bit (shoutout to @it-is-i-hamletthedane, I love you!!) but they’re not as active. :) (which is fine!! it happens!!)

Raoul – Philippe. I need that brother-brother interaction. The Persian would be really great, too. Or Madame Giry!! I wanna rp with pretty much every Phantom character, but I really only ever see Erik and Christine - sometimes Meg. (I see you, though!! I’m just shy!! Feel free to come say hi!!)

Maladh – Maladh is actually a holdover from an old Narnia rp group, so I’m just gonna shoutout another member who now has a multimuse (@ranwritesnarnia) and say I’d love to have him butt heads with any other Calormenes again.

Laertes – In addition to Hamlet, I NEED a Polonius. Please. Somebody.

Luke – well, Leia and Han, obviously. I’m just too shy to interact with them. In terms of characters I haven’t really seen, I’d love to interact with someone writing Uncle Owen and/or Aunt Beru.

Faramir – I haven’t actually dipped my toes into LoTR rping proper, so I’m down for anyone! Éowyn would be cool, Boromir would be cool, Denethor would be cool, Pippin would be cool.

Andrei – I’d honestly love to write with a Pierre or Natasha or Marya (please!!) but a character I haven’t seen would be Old Nikolai Bolkonsky? I think it would be really interesting. Don’t do this to me. I’ve really loved the Shakespeare rp fandom for a long time. They are so lovely and fun. Recently, the War & Peace fandom in general seems like a really great time? I’ve been enjoying the memes quite a bit.
