A name that always makes me smile. 肥後 Higo (or rarely Koego) is a surname, but also 肥後国 Higo-no-Kuni is the old name of 熊本県Kumamoto Prefecture.

肥 means fertile, fertilizer, get fat, or pamper. Higo-no-Kuni got its name from its the prolifically fertile land, but the name can also be interpreted as "manure country," which tickles me.

For readings, we have the verb pair 肥やす (koyasu) to fertilize, and 肥える (koeru) to gain weight, to grow fertile, or to be refined (in palate) or discerning (in eye/ear). There's also 肥る (futoru) to gain weight, but that's most commonly written 太る so don't worry. Finally, the on-yomi is hi, as in 肥料 (hiryō) fertilizer, 堆肥 (taihi) compost, 肥大 (hidai) swelling/enlargement, or 肥満 (himan) obesity.

後, as we've covered, means behind, back, or later/after, and it’s read nochi, ushi(ro), ato, oku.reru, go, or gō.

ここで特筆すべきは、その後（桶狭間の戦い後）の信長の戦いぶりである。彼自身、敵よりも過小な兵力をもって本陣に突入するという奇襲、すなわち賭博性の高い戦法は、以後二度と使うことはなかった。ともすれば成功体験におぼれ自己模倣を繰り返したくなるところだが、信長にはそれが一切なかったのである。 時としては外交により面従腹背の姿勢に終始しながら戦を回避し、いざ一戦を構えるとなると後詰の補給網すらも完璧にし、敵を凌駕した兵力をもって勝ちにいった。そこには奇襲といった要素はかけらもない。 またそれは自身の戦法に限らず、自らが次々と新たな戦術を生み出し実践していったのも信長である。その良い例が武田軍団との対決となった長篠の合戦だ。当時の武田軍団は、信玄亡き後も日本最強の呼び声が高く、事実長篠の合戦時においても将領の個々の実力は、信長と家康の連合軍のそれと優ることはあっても劣ることはないといわれた。 しかし結果はご存知のとおり。世界史的にみても空前絶後の3000丁の鉄砲を三段構えで打ち放った信長・家康軍の前に、旧態依然とした（というか、むしろ当時の主流であった）騎馬戦で挑もうとした武田の軍勢は奮戦あえなく散ることとなる。 まさに長篠の合戦は、新発想の軍法の前に、旧態依然とした体制が敗れた一戦であったのだが、勝った信長ではなく、負けた武田側の軍法が“甲州軍学”として後世に伝えられたことは一種のアイロニーかもしれない。
