On this special day, let's get to know the cutest protagonist in DMBJ, Wu Xie aka Tianzhen aka Xiao San Ye, in a deeper understanding although everyone must already know him (⁠≧⁠▽⁠≦⁠)

One of the best ways to understand what kind of character Wu Xie is by reading the book. I found some interesting meta/analysis about Wu Xie (and PingXie) and I want to share them here. However, everyone has a different perception and understanding of things, so just take it easy, okay? ദ്ദി(ᵔᗜᵔ)

In the postscript of Daomu Biji Vol. 8:

Wu Xie is a difficult person to describe. If I have to say it, I want to say: he is actually an ordinary person.

A: In the main story, he is really a bit naive. Why he wasn’t over the past?

Let’s analyze Wu Xie’s mental journey over the years:

A major premise is that Men You Ping has always been Wu Xie's greatest source of security.

Wu Xie is too curious, but as a fledgling young man, he lacks experience and force value. If his curiosity is not satisfied and the problem cannot be solved, he will easily fall into anxiety (the book mentions many times that he was anxious when encountering difficulties, so I won’t take screenshots.), and Men You Ping has been providing guidance and protection to Wu Xie, which can be said to have given him a great sense of security in both physical and mental aspects (here I summarized it before. Xu Lei (NPSS) also said in the interview that Zhang Qiling had been protecting Wu Xie and helping him deal with many problems, so when he left, Wu Xie was forced to become like him.

Therefore, when Men You Ping was no longer with Wu Xie, his source of security was suddenly taken away.

During the ten years when Xiaoge was away, Wu Xie must have dreamed of Men You Ping countless times during the long agony of waiting and dealing with the enemy. Especially when he encountered difficulties, He prayed, hoped, and imagined that Men You Ping would fall from the sky and appear next to him like it did in the past, because this is a habit he has developed due to Xiaoge's protection.

The title of the chapter in Sand Sea where Wu Xie's throat was cut and he fell off the cliff is the poem "Like red beans inlaid in the ivory dice, my yearning for you is deep in my bones" (the translation comes from here). Why was this poem chosen as the title of this chapter?

Xu Lei once answered this question in a vx (Weixin/WeChat) interview. He said that this was his emotion at the time. Writing in the first person, the author's mood at that time represents the mood of the protagonist at that time, so the meaning of this poem is Wu Xie's mood at that time.

Xu Lei said in a lecture at Fudan University in 2013: "Wu Xie was doing a lot of things with a sense of resentment in Sand Sea, because everyone abandoned him and left him alone there as a widow. The only person he can settle accounts with is Men You Ping, because he is a person who will appear at a fixed place at a fixed time, so Wu Xie must be holding his breath and preparing to ask that person for something back." Therefore, during the Tibetan Sea Flower period, Wu Xie had just left the sense of security provided by Men You Ping, and would still subconsciously seek his protection when encountering difficulties, even if it was just his statue. During Sand Sea period, he had clearly understood that Men You Ping was no longer by his side, so he had to force himself to become stronger and become like him. But even so, when he was extremely anxious, he still couldn't help but miss Men You Ping, which put him in a state of both longing and resentment.

But even so, even in those ten years, Wu Xie had thoughts, resentments and worries about Men You Ping, and thought about asking for something from Men You Ping, but he still couldn't bear it. The moment he saw Men You Ping again, he still chose to cover up all these emotions, so he subconsciously pulled down his sleeves to cover the scars on his hands, just as he said during Sand Sea period. When he sees Men You Ping again, he will not tell him all this, he will only tell him that you are just a patient, and you can rest now. It has been analyzed before that the reason why Xiaoge went to Hangzhou to say goodbye to Wu Xie before entering the bronze door and said to him "You are my only connection with this world" is because for the first time he had his own "desire". Maybe the word "fall in love" or "lover" the writer uses here is too strong for some people lol, but they did care for each other, no matter what the relationship is, it can't be denied, right? There were some questions that appeared in my head when I read the book, why did Wu Xie do that? Why did he do this? Why did he do all of these things to this extent? Then I understood. Actually, Wu Xie, especially in his early stage, reminds me of my old-self, so I feel like I can sympathize with him somehow. His "innocence" is different from the innocence that most people think, Wu Xie's innocence is the kind of innocence who wished everyone well.

This is a post-apocalyptic fic but I think it had been written for so long that the author seemed to forget some original setting like the "rule-based horror" trope. I am reading it on and off.

A fic with an old-fashion "evil will be rewarded with evil" idea and the MC had killed so many people with the aid of the "system" (as in the computer/game system). The only thing with this author is that they tended to put the fic on long hiatus and then came back months later as a changed person and shifty completed the work. It is so good so far.

I've never heard of this story before but WUKONG starting shit just cause the Arhots were getting more attention PLEASE!

I love they immediately go to get Wujing to come help but hate that it was all a trap because this imagine is so cute of the three of them just hanging out.

THEY ARE SO SWEET TOGETHER! I love stories where after the journey they are still such close friends/family. Drop of a hat would just join each other to beat up some guys no questions asked. But boooo this guy turns out to be the Arhat after their butts.

But still a lot of great moments of Bajie and Wukong fighting together! Do love that they still continue the trend that Wukong has trouble fighting under water and him asking Bajie for that help makes a lot of sense with him used to be the Marshall of the Heavenly Reeds.

But still Bajie isn't nearly as immune to elements nor has the same stamina as Wukong does, making him tire out quickly and being more prone to magical attacks.

八戒想了想，道：“我倒是想起早年学过一门八面玲珑功，此功虚头巴脑，对敌全然无用，但今天正用得上，他无影无相，我只求滴水不漏，或许可以破他这路拳。”

Wukong! Is that a genuine compliment?! I never thought I would see the day! I bet that his moves were beautiful!

This is my first time seeing Bajie with his own clones so that is pretty neat to witness in another story.

Wukong is such a homie, he knows that Bajie doesn't have the same immunities as him and even pushes him out of the way when he is prone.

八戒虽然惧怕罗汉法宝，但他就盯住过江罗汉，俩人正是对手，拳来耙去，直斗得愁云惨雾，日头偏西。

But also good on Bajie for not backing down either! He is clearly scared and feels outmatched but he refuses to back down. Love that about him, always a coward but he ain't a doormat.

体高罗汉见过江罗汉无法取胜，就拿闪电瓶对准八戒，一连串闪电直刺过来，八戒吓得一哆嗦，压低云头，躲到了流沙河中，找到一片荷叶，把鼻子埋了进去。

这边悟空不再需要顾忌八戒，金箍棒变大变粗，将方寸山棍法解数全部丢出来，形成一张紧密的棍网。虽然被围在核心，他还是哈哈大笑：“任你们罗汉花招再多，谁也进不了俺的棍网！”

Also that even when Bajie does go to hide in the river Wukong sees this as more advantageous than anything as he can finally go all out. He was holding back cause Bajie was in his line of fire but now he is out of friendly-fire range he can do maximum damage without worry!

悟空战退了四罗汉，再来寻八戒，发现八戒已不在荷花池，连连高叫无人回应。

Late-bloomer Omega Fu Xiaoyu and recent divorcee Alpha Xu Jiale connect and build a relationship based on their intense sexual chemistry and attraction. Sex allows Fu Xiaoyu to feel loved, desirable, and unashamed of his own sexuality for the first time, but this new relationship forces Xu Jiale to confront his own misconceptions about marriage as well as the difficult reality of parenting a young child after divorce. Every Omega in this story has complicated histories and attitudes toward relationships because of society's prejudice against their gender, and every major relationship in this novel involves a divorcee, a cheater, or both. But in the end, they all keep living and trying.

[ABO (A/O), transmigration, abuse recovery, political activism] -- This novel uses the ABO setting to explore gender-based oppression. A surgeon transmigrates to an ABO universe, into the body of a horribly abusive Alpha, whose partner is terrified but powerless in their oppressive society. They work hard to help each other heal from deep-seated trauma, and join the work of advocates for Omega's rights. This is the most political danmei I have ever read, that shows civil disobedience and structural changes can be good and necessary. The advocates network, organize, protest, and they get threats and pushbacks. Prejudice is systemic, generational, and almost normalized in society, and it takes a massive wave of disruptive protests to finally bring about rudimentary legislative protections for Omega. It comes too late for many and is far from any semblance of equality, but it's hope and a start.

老婆是顶级Alpha，我该怎么办 by 海藻大王

(Title roughly translates to "My Wife is a top-level Alpha, What should I do?")

[ABO (A/A), "rebirth", space/interstellar, mecha, college, political conspiracies] -- Now, for an ABO novel that just wants to have fun as a OP Mary-Sue sci-fi-ish Young-Adult Action-Adventure. The protagonist is a super-soldier reborn to the early days of his military career with skills, knowledge, and an AI assistant from the future. The love interest is a prince who is rich enough to buy entire planets. Together they become the most popular power couple at the military academy, and work together to foil a conspiracy that targets talented Alphas. They get fake-married, and later discover they are each other's secret online crush. It has plenty of humor, a cute "college" romance, and the kind of dramatic "cool" characters my teenage self would could only dream of in a wish-fulfillment fic. Save it for one of those days when you just want to relax and revel in the joy of ridiculously attractive and competent teenagers who are killing assassins, saving the empire, and acing their exams!

Actors and Celebrities

内娱第一花瓶 by 三三娘

(Title roughly translates to "Top Flower Vase of the Mainland Entertainment Industry")

[entertainment industry, film-making, reconciliation, elite society ]-- Most entertainment industry novels focus on the fun parts of glamour and fame, but this story puts the focus on the creative work, with a main couple that has marvelous chemistry as great artists who inspire each other. Over the 900K words of this novel, they meet, fall in love, bond over film-making, break up, and later reconcile. It's one of those rare stories where the shou has to chase the gong after breaking up, and you can sympathize with the hurt on both sides while understanding that no one is intentionally being scummy. The novel really goes into the details of film-making and the entertainment industry -- the styles and visions of the directors, the practice and preparation of the actors, the logistics and finances of running a crew, and the strategic calculations to manipulate the media narrative and public discourse.

I have a love-hate relationship with this novel because of some of its narrative choices. Some arcs seem to just fawn over the "wisdom" and "classiness" of the ultra-rich, and conflate privilege with virtue. (The gong, whose family of casino owners once helped him pay off hundreds of millions in gambling debt, is the one making an awarding-winning movie about a regular person succumbing to gambling addiction ... ) But to be fair, I'm holding this novel to a higher standard than a typical danmei because of how good it is and how much I like it.

Concealed and Blended: Fendai :: 粉黛 by 七世有幸

[entertainment industry, actor x makeup artist] -- This is also a story about two artists who inspire and help each other develop their crafts, but a much shorter and lighter take. The gong is a makeup artist, who is "straight" but cross-dresses as a branding gimmick to advance his career. The shou is a retired E-sports player-turned-idol actor, who is secretly gay and has no real passion for performance. The novel starts off with funny interactions between "straight pretending to be queer" vs "gay pretending to be straight." Later, they develop a deep bond after collaborating on a series of projects, and help each other discover their true career aspirations. Despite being celebrities, the main character feel like normal people because we see them learning and practicing their professional skills. Fame is a fickle and cruel game that they must play in their profession, but does not define who they are.

Flower Vase :: 花瓶 by 困倚危楼

[entertainment industry, contract relationship, scum gong crematorium, reconciliation] -- This story is a classic in the scum gong crematorium genre. Wealthy business man gong pays actor shou for a sexual relationship; the shou is secretly in love with the gong, who is pining after a "white moonlight". The shou is smart, resilient, knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it. The gong has already started falling for him, but he hasn't moved on from his "White moonlight". Their peaceful breakup mid-story is suffocating, because they both have feelings for each other, and they almost got it to work, but the feelings are just not quite right yet, so this relationship has to end before it festers into something truly unsalvageable. But don't stress too much, the "crematorium" is so friendly it almost feels like an kiddie obstacle course the shou has set up to help them transition into a better relationship -- didn't I mention he is a very smart guy who knows how to get what he wants?

(The title is a reference to an Eason Chan song. I can't find an official translation of the song title, but it roughly translates to "Once and Again")

[entertainment industry, rebirth in another body, reconciliation] -- Controversial actor Jiang Yu dies in a traffic accident, and returns in the body of a D-list Idol. It's very fun to follow a POV character like Jiang Yu, whose internal monologue is dripping with pettiness, insecurity, jealousy, and adamant insistence that he is *fine* with his hard-working and kind-hearted self always being misunderstood in bad faith. His love interest is his foil in this: an award-winning actor with an impeccable reputation and a unflappable personality. As the story explore their histories, relationships, and grief over Jiang Yu's death, it also deconstructs these initial perceptions. In this second life, Jiang Yu gets a more measured view of his relationships and artistic legacy, while his "perfect" boyfriend faces his own flaws and the critical mistakes he has made in their relationship. With this clarity and honesty, they rekindle their relationship, and Jiang Yu starts a new life and career.

Misc. Modern

Poison of the Heart :: 心毒 初禾

[mystery/police procedural, (sort of) social commentary] -- Instead of uncovering some mastermind criminal conspiracy, this police procedural is famous for its down-to-earth cases, so realistic it makes readers a bit depressed about life. Most of the cases see normal people gradually lose their best selves after suffering excessively under systemic social issues like poverty, misogyny, and prejudice. Their misfortunes, emotions, and reactions feel very realistic and relatable. However, since the discrete cases do not build up to a coherent arc, they also don't do much to support the development of the main characters -- a detective and a cybersecurity expert; they are fine but I just don't find either of them or their slow-burn romance too interesting. (Their slacker co-worker who becomes more motivated in his career has a more memorable character arc imo.) Personally, I think this novel is a good read for the mysteries, but maybe not so much as a romance or character drama.

Surrender (Book 1) :: 臣服 I by 墨奈何/墨青城

[BDSM, power differences, mob/gang drama] -- Young businessman Xu Ye, who has only dabbled with BDSM, stumbles into one of the most skilled dom's in town, who is also a mob heir. This dom finally gives Xu Ye the experience he wants from BDSM. But as their chemistry in the playroom soars, their personal and professional relationship in the real word grows more complicated. I love that this story shows the communication and work that goes into building a relationship, albeit one within BDSM parameters. The story repeatedly emphasizes that both partners are equals outside of play (but this rule is sometimes broken by the main couple for "drama"). Although Xu Ye is a sub, he has more agency than most shou's I see in danmei. He is experienced with sex, knows what he wants and likes, and is fairly independent from Chu Ye professionally and personally. He feels like a reasonable adult who has chosen a relationship that brings him joy and pleasure.

(Title roughly translates to "fallen in transaction")

[romance, (sort of) prostitution, family relationships, healing and forgiveness] -- This a Haitang story with lots of humour and sex, but also a surprise tear-jerker full of heart. An Li's life has been ruined by a criminal record, taking the fall for his cheating ex-wife so she can look after their ill daughter. While desperate to find work to support his young daughter's medical treatment, he is mistaken for a male escort by young CEO Xu Shaoqing. Xu Shaoqing is angered by An Li's borderline homophobic reaction to the incident, and pressures An Li to sleep with him for money. Xu Shaoqing himself is struggling with the distress his sexuality causes his homophobic and ailing father, who has sent him to conversion therapy and still pressures him to go on dates with women. An Li and Xu Shaoqing eventually form an unlikely connection, as they help each other process the hurt caused by the people they love, and salvage the good from those relationships.

Fei Ping Ying Qiang :: 妃嫔媵嫱 by 七月侯

[male concubine, imperial harem & court drama, age gap (initially 15 vs 20)] -- As an unfavored shu son, Xiao-Qi is "gifted" by his family to his brother-in-law, a prince who is known to like men. Though he has no choice in the matter, he eventually falls in love with the Prince, who has shown him more kindness than anyone else in his life. The prince (gong) has a "realistic" and gradual shift from accepting period-typical polygamy to wanting to build a life with the one partner who really loves him, but it's a messy situation because he has already married and sired children with multiple women, and his position really requires him to have an heir. However, Xiao-Qi learns a lot and grows up with the gong's help, and together they overcome political and social obstacles for Xiao-qi to be recognized as his partner.

穿成苏培盛了 by 一渡清河

(Title roughly translates to "Transmigrated as Su Peisheng", referring to the name given to Yongzheng Emperor's senior personal eunuch in the popular cdrama "Empresses in the Palace".)

[historical transmigration, Qing Dynasty/Kangxi Era, political intrigue, prince x (real) eunuch] -- Lovers of long, complex, character-driven political novels will probably enjoy this 2-million-words epic. It's not only a battle of wits, but also a examination of personal values and emotional priorities of many well-crafted characters who live in a complex political environment, including the largest and most active female cast I have ever seen in danmei. The protagonist shou is a transmigrator, and it shows mostly through him being very mature during his younger years, and having a sense of self-worth unexpected of slaves of that era. The gong is Fourth Prince Yinzhen (future Emperor Yongzheng), and he is married with children just like in history. The main couple have a bittersweet secret relationship, yet they love each other enough to be able to live with that imperfection. The plot seriously downplayed the darker implications of the shou' role as a eunuch and slave, but their idealized romance is a much-needed relief from the intense and tightly-paced political content, which is inspired by real history.

九千岁[重生] by 绣生

(The novel title literally translates to "Nine Thousand-Years-Old", which is a title occasionally given to excessively powerful eunuchs, comparing them to royals, like emperors who are said to live to "Ten thousand years".)

[ (eventual) "double rebirth", political intrigue, prince x (fake) eunuch] -- In his first life, Crown Prince Yin Chengyu is deposed after falling for political traps, and only returns to court after making a "indecent proposal" with powerful eunuch Xue Shu. Despite working together to help Yin Chengyu win the crown and govern the nation, their relationship remains complicated and contentious until Yin Chengyu's untimely death from illness and overwork. Waking up as his younger self, Yin Chengyu immediately puts a metaphorical leash on Xue Shu's neck while the latter is still young and impressionable. While they work to strengthen Yin Chengyu's political position, the prince also tries to come to terms with his feelings for Xue Shu across the two lifetimes. Xue Shu eventually recovers his memories of the first lifetime, and their second-chance romance gets a happy ending.

As a serious political novel, this story lacks depth and suspense, but as a feel-good "rebirth" novel, the plot feels a bit too slow and heavy. It doesn't stand out in either categories, but it feels unfair to completely ignore it, especially because it kept me company for weeks while I was struggling with a reading slump.

第十二封情书 (finished, took about 4 days, noticed I got better at speed reading as it went, and I seem to pick a Very Specific type of daily life setting danmei which is realistic, this made my heart feel heavy and reminded me of growing up with no real fancy happy ending but instead feeling a lot like I was looking into someone’s diary, someone’s life, a reality for someone that I also understand. its definitely similar to 他们的故事 in how they both feel like i looked into a real life, very relatable, very intimate storytelling style like the author is sharing their own experiences maybe).

I recall that when I first entered the abyss of Chinese novel (and in case you wonder, yes, I’m still stuck here), memorising everyone’s names, nicknames, titles and whatnot was painful. Seriously, no one ever has just one single name (￣▽￣). And to make things even more complicated, character names usually carry a specific meaning, such as foretelling that character’s destiny, describing appearance or expressing personality. Surely, character naming isn’t simple business here.

And of course, Daomu Biji doesn’t fall out of that pattern. I was having a convo with @aknightus and she wondered why everyone’s name is translated in the English sub except for Wu Xie. So here I am, writing a very quick and dirty guide to do some justice (hopefully) to the various names of the 5 main guys of Daomu Biji. Here we go!

Wu Xie (吴邪)

Name meaning: A wordplay of the term 无邪, also pronounced as “wu xie”, meaning “no evil”. Okay he is the main character, so his name obviously has deep meanings. For one thing, it describes his naive, slightly gullible nature. More importantly, the name is given by his grandfather (Wu Lao Gou) to express the hope that he will live a ‘no evil’ life even though he is a descendant of The Nine Families. Needless to say, Wu Xie’s name is a foreshadow of his character development throughout the entire Daomu Biji novel.

Will he remain ‘no evil’ forever? That is left for us readers to find out.

Other names/titles:

- To Pan Zi and other underlings: Xiao San Ye (小三爷), lit. translated as “Little Third Master”, because he is Third Uncle’s nephew (Third Uncle is addressed as “Third Master” by people in the tomb-robbing community).

- To Pangzi: Tian Zhen, which is short for Tian Zhen Wu Xie (天真无邪), lit. translated as “Innocent and No Evil”, again a wordplay on his real name due to the same pronunciation.

Men You Ping  (闷油瓶)

Name meaning: Lit. translated as “Tightly Closed Oil Bottle”, the name could be contextually understood as “the guy who doesn’t like to talk”. Important note: Contrary to what is portrayed in the drama adaptation, the only person to know this name is Wu Xie. Wu Xie specifically uses this name only in his head and his diary writing. No one else is aware of this, including Men You Ping himself.

Real name: Zhang Qiling (张起灵), which actually isn’t a name but a title given to only the head of the Zhang family. This also means that there were other generations of Zhang Qilings that lived before him. “Qiling” refers to the act of bringing the dead to their final resting place. From this name, it can be guessed that all Zhang Qilings have the role of bringing the corpses of Zhang family members back to the Zhang Family Mansion under the lake in Banai, their so-called burial ground.

Name origin/Fun fact: The author once mentioned that Zhang Qiling’s image is built on his high-school best friend and also roommate. The roommate slept on the bed numbered 370, which is pronounced as “san qi ling”, a very similar sound to “Zhang Qiling”.

Other names/titles:

- To Wu Xie, Pangzi and other tomb-robbing comrades: Xiao Ge (小哥), lit. translated as “Little Big Brother”, an endearing/respectful term used to call a man who is likely to be younger than you.

- To Hei Xiazi: Ya Ba Zhang (哑巴张), lit. translated as “Mute Zhang”, because we all know how much Men You Ping dislikes speaking lol.

Wang Pangzi (王胖子)

Name meaning: Fatty Wang

Real name: Wang Yueban (王月半)

Xiao Hua (小花)

Name meaning: Little Flower

Real name: Xie Yuchen (解雨臣 )

Other names/titles:

- Stage name: Jie Yuhua (解语花), roughly translated as “talking flower”, a metaphor usually used to describe a beautiful woman. This is because since young, Xiao Hua takes on a female role in his stage acting, and in canon, he is also described by Wu Xie as ‘very pretty, almost like a lady that steps out from a painting’. Important note: The character 解 is pronounced differently in his real name (Xie) and his stage name (Jie).

Hei Xiazi (黑瞎子)

Name meaning: Blind Person In Black. This is because he almost went blind due to a mummy’s curse, as mentioned in the sequel Sea of Sands.

Real name: Unknown, save for the fact that his surname is Qi (齐).

Other names/titles:

- To Wu Xie, Pangzi and other tomb-robbing comrades: Hei Yanjing (黑眼镜), lit. translated as “Black Glasses”.

Pingxie Fanvids - Double Standards

I know the English-speaking pingxie community is small, but the Chinese community is huuuuuuuge (with the caveat that fanworks is sometimes a bit decentralized and difficult to search, because China and these kind of works... boo).

One of my favorite subset of videos to find on BiliBili (Chinese Youtube), are ‘double standard’ videos. Or, how pingxie act with each other vs. with others. You can find them all by searching “瓶邪双标” here.

This is how they generally go:

Xiaoge to others: Ignores them, frowny face, ignores them, lets them suffer their own fate, glares at them, shoves them around / treats them roughly.

Xiaoge to Wu Xie: Attentive, responds to his questions, smiles, acts soft, saves him (like a lot), is super gentle with him, only ‘activates’ at the mention of Wu Xie, etc.

Wu Xie to others: Do not bomb relics Pangzi, hey we should turn back because danger, normal ish dude to dude (yes, A-ning is also a dude) interactions.

Wu Xie to Xiaoge: Like a lost puppy, always callling his name, ‘danger? what danger, xiaoge is three feet away already quick I gotta catch up’, ‘Pangzi where TF is your bomb we gotta save Xiaoge’

Here are some of my favs, one from each of the last three Daomu dramas with both of them (I’ve added some general explanations for non-speakers, though I’ve no idea how much that helps.)

The Lost Tomb 2

Wu Xie when listening to instructions (always Xiaoge)

Wu Xie when requiring manual labor (use Pangzi)

Wu Xie when Xiaoge is suspicious, and Pangzi cracks a joke (defend Xiaoge)

Wu Xie when both Xiaoge and Pangzi are getting out of the water (help Xiaoge)

Wu Xie when Pangzi says continue into danger (reject, lecture mode), when Xiaoge says continue into danger (OK, wait for me!)

Wu Xie when Xiaoge gets injured (worry), when Pangzi gets injured (ridicule)

Wu Xie when deciding to continue on (ignore Pangzi, worry about / defer to Xiaoge)

Wu Xie when both Xiaoge and Pangzi contributed to defeating the enemy (cut Pangzi's boasting short, praise Xiaoge)

Wu Xie when Pangzi saves Wu Xie (Ignores Pangzi - Xiaoge! I have to go save Xiaoge!)

Ultimate Note

Xiaoge when saving people (max comfort for Wu Xie, no regard for other)

Wu Xie when learning A-ning hired Xiaoge (how dare you hire my husband)

Wu Xie when opting to ‘hit’ someone (chooses Pangzi, never Xiaoge)

Xiaoge when seeing them fall (catch Wu Xie, let Pangzi fall on his ass)

Xiaoge when sensing something wrong with them AKA the parasitic mushroom - With Pangzi, knock him out, let him drop to the ground from standing, don’t let wife Wu Xie approach. With Wu Xie - catch him gently even though other is already squatting, handles gently)

Wu Xie when Xiaoge disappears into the meteorite (Pangzi get down so I can step on you to find Xiaoge)

(I think this one was published prior to completion of series, so a lot are missing. But it’s a bit more difficult to find a good comparison video for Ultimate Note that I can also easily explain.)

The Lost Tomb Reboot

Wu Xie when it comes to using bombs in tombs - Pangzi’s suggestion (ignore), Xiaoge in danger (Hurry up, Pangzi!)

Xiaoge when it comes to explaining things - If Wu Xie asks (explain thoroughly, draw a picture even, face fully to speak, volunteer information unsolicited, anything spoken must be responded to - even if he’s just saying he’s thirsty). If others (aka Liu Sang here) ask (ignore, don’t even look at, only turns to glare because other said something stupid like Wu Xie might be dead, leaves, don’t care, what’s this got to do with me, stop talking to me)

Xiaoge and Wu Xie in keeping pace with each other - Xiaoge with others (leave behind, eat my dust). Xiaoge with Wu Xie (turn to wait). Wu Xie with Pangzi (ignore). Wu Xie with Xiaoge (always wait, arms gently guiding).

Wu Xie when separated from others (call Xiaoge’s name first always).

Wu Xie when others get too close to Xiaoge (wtf are you doing Pangzi, smile at Pangzi’s joke immediately drops when Xiaoge jokingly agrees to be Pangzi’s belt accessory, ditches Pangzi when the former offers up the female doll to Xiaoge)

Another one of my favorite songs, 请笃信一个梦， sang by Zhou Shen (周深）， some may recognize him for drama and donghua ost’s

Zhou Shen’s voice is incredible, but also the part there the child was singing, made me really think about xiaoge’s life and how NPSS said he is the most innocent character out of the DMBJ series

The lyrics are also surprisingly fitting. If you ship WX&ZQL, you might find the song heartwarming

This edit is based off of a Xieping fic

Basically while ZQL was in the Bronze Gate, he subconsciously materialized another version of himself. 

The other “him” died after telling him to go home with Wu Xie. 

ZQL, feared that he is an imposter himself and that WX is going to find out, buried his other “self” in a stone-piled grave before meeting with WX.

ZQL went home with WX, trying to keep the materializing thing a secret, but one day the secret was exposed by Hei Xiazi, who found the buried body on Changbai Mountains.
