hello. you know that now in the fandom everybody are really trilled with their own ships (which is fine) for free! main characters ,,, the writers've just - to give 'something' to the fans- decided to make asahi/kisumi and ikuya/hiyori look like some suitable couples to make it kinda canon for the fans and stop them to ship their main characters ??

I don’t know how to quite answer this to be honest, so forgive me if this doesn’t make any sense, and do keep in mind this is mostly just opinions, but:

I disagree a lot. Like, the season 3 was a mess, but as far as ships’s concerned, it’s nothing but fanservice - so they weren’t trying to stop fans from shipping the main. They just had a bunch of new characters introduced in Starting Days (and also in season 3 as well) and I think they wanted too much out of it all.

They wanted to give so much time to everyone that it just pilled up and became messy af. Instead of prioritizing the main storyline, which has always been Haru’s storyline, they went ahead and wanted literally everyone to be main and it was hard to watch tbh. When you have a group of 5, it’s difficult to give screentime to everyone. In season 3 they tried to give screentime and lines to legit everyone, which is really not recommended to do, especially when you’ve done differently for so long up until there (s1, s2, even Starting Days all focused on Haru as first priority, Rin as second and then the rest of the two “main groups” - Nagisa, Makoto, Rei and Momo, Ai and Sousuke).

So point is, I feel like they had a lot of characters they wanted to give screentime to, but couldn’t do so individually because then there wouldn’t be enough time, so they paired them up in what made sense to them and then went with that.

Asahi and Kisumi had moments in Starting Days, so it’s not completely off to have them have a moment or two in s3 as well, since the moments in Starting Days they shared were very popular among fans at the time (not gonna lie, their individual energy pairs up quite well, whether you view them platonic or romantic). Do I think they should have had /that/ much screentime? Less screentime? Idk dude. I personally would prefer other characters’ bonds to be explored more than theirs, but I didn’t mind it much either, they were entertaining but not really a whole lot more than that.

Now for Ikuya and Hiyori. That whole charade and storyline was… yikes. It makes sense with Ikuya’s character to befriend someone as controlling as Hiyori but the massive focus Ikuya and Hiyori got, down to their moments and all was just.. yeah I do not want to go into that, but I highkey did not enjoy watching it at all. It also felt very badly written and very much copied from the previous seasons.

None of the two ships were ever shown in any was as “canon”, btw. So the accusation is even more off. I don’t think KyoAni will ever make any of the ships canon, especially not the same sex ones. And while that fact makes me a sad, of course, I’m also, in some really disturbing way, quite glad ‘cause the fandom would riot if so. Let’s say the dream came true and RH became canon, which would fit a lot to the storyline I might add, everyone else other than RH fans would get pissed, both the antis (obviously) and the “my ship deserved to be canon more than your ship”, so yeah. I think I would feel this too, if say MH or SR became canon, like I would hate it so much and it would give me quite the heartbreak, which would make it extremely difficult for me to support the fact that they just made history for my community (the LGBTQ+ community, rather than my RH fandom community). And if a minor ship I don’t mind became canon, I would feel happy of course, but at the same time in some weird way I would still be disappointed that they chose to fetch representation through background characters rather than the main. But yeah, I would prefer that at the same time, ‘cause then there would be much needed representation without the fandom going negatively apeshit over it.

It would be groundbreaking if Free! had a same sex couple, it would make history for an anime to do this, especially a sports anime, like with Yuri on Ice, but even more so with a show like Free! that’s run for ages and had a massive hype to it. But yeah I don’t think KyoAni has the guts to make that stand and do this. And I also don’t think the fandom is mature enough, either. Because if they made a main character canonly queer, it would create backslash from fans bc they disagree and if they made a background character canon it would backslash bc fans would feel it wouldn’t be “enough”, due to it feeling like less representation and all. I would rather see another anime do this, so there would be no hard feelings and so that there won’t be any illogical backslash from the fandom in any way.

KyoAni makes their ship hints but it’s for no other purpose than queerbait, and that’s sad yes, but it’s always been like this since the very beginning of Free!.

To end this, I think, or hope, season 3 was just one big filler season which introduced us to all the old and new characters in order to give them closure or to allow us to get to know them more and see where the child characters winded up as teens and adults, and so on. Basically the introduction step before moving on from there to the main (the main top 5, y’know)’s futures. I look forward to what KyoAni has in store for us, but I don’t have much hope for it either.

I go into each new chapter knowing Kato will twist my heart and she has yet to let me down. That face Shiro made after Mephisto said "she was pregnant" is actually hard to look at... Was it really that shocking for him to find that out?

I suppose it was his definite confirmation that Yuri is in great danger? That Satan’s influence over her is greater than he thought, that the balance has tipped (since he previously sort of listened to her)?But there’s something very off about that… “was”.WAS pregnant.The issue here is that we don’t know when exactly this takes place- Could be Mephisto just mentioned this in passing before the whole attempted escape “Oh btw I saw your almost-girlfriend seems the other guy knocked her up lol”… But a lot of people are re-hatching the old theory that maybe, just mayyybe- Satan may not be the father of at least one of the twins. They’re fraternal after all- two eggs, not one.Satan seems kind of angry about her “smelling different” (as in, change in hormones affecting her body odour? Or smelling like… cigarettes, perhaps?)… Shiro however, seems adamant about killing the kid, no matter who’s it is (though he emphasizes it’s Satan’s)… Then again… He only mentions ONE kid. Does he know they are twins or not? It seems he may have already been on mission to fetch the sword when that was discovered…But Satan always acknowledged only Rin as his son, not Yukio. Same for the kings- you never see Meph refer to Yukio as his little brother. Because he doesn’t have the flames? Or because he’s not really Satan’s offspring after all?Sooo many questions!~Stay tuned for the stunning conclusion next chapter :P~

YGO ArcV, overall

Out of the three YGO series I’ve watched so far, A5 ranks the lowest for me and it’s the one I wouldn’t recommend at all. Obviously, this is deeply personal, but I didn’t find anything particularly worthwhile about either characters or plot.

Just getting this out of the way because it’s not even A5′s fault but definitely impacted the way I saw it: I didn’t like Yuya. As a character, he was entirely a miss emotionally, a huge case of informed attributes. I didn’t even objectively find him interesting or compelling (like Yusei). I also really, really hated his dueling. But since he’s the main character, there is naturally a lot of him and everyone loves him by the end. This is normal, but having to put up with it when I don’t like him was a nightmare. If I had at least been lukewarm or indifferent toward Yuya, I would have found A5 probably a lot less tedious. Again, not the show’s fault here, but definitely a thing that happened.

I would say A5′s biggest strength was its potential in terms of possibilities. The cosmology was more immediate and usable than Zexal’s “a dragon created the universe long ago,” the concept of worlds based on past series and cameos is ripe for fun fics and ideas, the whole 4 counterparts set up suggests off-screen alternate perspectives of events. Interesting concepts for fans to explore can take a series far.

A5′s two biggest problems would probably be lack of balance in its ideological message and lack of... naturally-flowing plot threads, let’s call it.

In terms of tone, A5 tries to do both Darker and Edgier and Lighter and Softer elements. There’s serious, moral gray and gray stuff like the heavy war as hell from the Xyz survivors and the entire buildup of how messed up the City is. There’s details like multiple failed duels in Heartland (vs Kaito, vs Edo, etc) showing how things are not that simple. Except that... they are that simple. Yuya and Jack duel, and somehow that solves all the societal issues in the City. Kaito nearly cards Kurosaki and leaves the duel unmoved by their nakama message, but then returns suddenly changed. Etc, etc. It’s not that the final result is “cardgames solve everything,” it’s that A5 often builds up issues as being far more complex than it has capacity to address properly, so the solutions we knew would come (cause it’s shounen) feel like they fall short.

The pacifist (?) “duels are not a tool of war” message is just not well integrated with the rest of the stuff shown (aka, the war, the societal issues, the multiple characters with deep issues due to past trauma or ongoing personal goals). Frankly, the entire smile and entertainment dueling ideology is poorly elaborated and involves a ton of being told by character that this particular duel is entame but that one is not, without any real way to judge for ourselves, and why it suddenly starts or stops working. There’s also a general lack of consistency about whether characters remember to entame at all.

In terms of its character and plot progression, it often feels like A5 focuses too much on the needs of specific scenes without considering the overall flow and consistency.

I would say the first notable example was Masumi. She’s a minor character, but she gets quite a bit of screen time and one of the most thorough early character threads about hunting Yuto/Kurosaki because her teacher was carded. She finds Kurosaki, she has a moment of solidarity with her team, and she gets completely trashed to show how strong and ruthless Kurosaki is. And that’s it. She gets memory wiped. Did you care about Masumi and want her to have some closure about her teacher? Too bad. We have no idea if Reiji erased all her memories of Professor Marco or if she now thinks he’s on an extended vacation or what, but Masumi totally drops all interest in the matter. Her character motivations just get flat out wiped once she’s served her purpose.

Other characters are like this too. Like Yugo. He’s one of the four counterparts, so a lot of fans got the idea that they all have at least somewhat equivalent weight. Not really. Yugo’s quest to help Rin, the driving point of his character? Left completely hanging too. Rin beats him under brainwashing -- and if that was where his story ended, it would be a tragedy, but understandable narratively. But it’s not. Rin inexplicably leaves him just lying there, and he goes off to duel Yuri (by... happenstance iirc) and get beaten and eaten. It’s a weird, awkward place to end him that gives no sense of actual closure (again).

Even characters who don’t get dropped have weird progressions that make it hard to feel satisfied. Like, Kurosaki has multiple duels to show how severe his trauma is (good duels btw, some of the best). But then this trauma is addressed by having him duel Crow and... remember that he once dueled to the future of Heartland’s children. This comes out of nowhere and never goes anywhere either, but the outcome is that, next time he duels, Kurosaki is all into nakama. That’s a very natural shounen place to end up, don’t get me wrong, and the duel itself was pretty good, but how did Crow’s duel bridge to this? And then we twist into him accepting Ruri and Yuto being dead in a very awkward (at best) way.

Plotlines have some similar issues, in addition to various instances of writing that feels like contrivance, convenience, or plain plot hole.

So yeah. On the whole, this series ranked very low for me. But at least there’s fan content.
