Tubbo, who’d just looked over his shoulder, frowned. “Tommy?”

He folded up the paper. “Tubs, someone out there who looks just like me who stole a probably very dangerous virus that potentially has some very loose connections Ran. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I sure as hell won’t sit around on my ass when shit has already hit the fan. I’m not letting any sort of lead escape me.”

Tubbo grimaced. “Look, I know… I know Ran’s death hit you hard,”

“He didn’t die.”

“…I know it’s tough, but you can’t go on some wild goose chase looking for Ran just because he wore a jacket with the same company that caught fire today because of some look-alike. It could be a complete coincidence.”

Tommy stood. “Or it’s not a coincidence.”

“Or it is!” Tubbo backed up, frustrated. “What if you go out there, and it was all for nothing, and then you get hurt? Or WORSE?”

“What if,” Tommy shot back, “I go out there and I findour best friend?! What if, I go out there, and I find out what happened to Ran, even if he’s gone- which he isn’t- because I actually fucking cared, unlike you?!”

Tubbo gasped, tears welling in his eyes and emotion choking in his throat. “You think that I don’t care? You think that I don’t wish I was out there right now, putting myself through thick and thin searching desperately for the person I met alone on the playground seven years ago? You think I don’t want to? I loved Ran. But I know what it’s like to lose someone, Tommy, and doing something like this won’t fix anything. Trust me.”

Tubbo turned away. “Do you think Ran would’ve wanted this for you? For you to throw yourself into potential danger because of some incredibly thin-strung ‘lead’ consisting of a jacket and a look-alike?”

“Yes.”

Tubbo looked back, crestfallen. A single tear rolled down his cheek as he opened the door. “Goodbye, Tommy. I’ll talk to you later, when you’re ready to listen. Stay safe.”

And then he was gone, angry footsteps echoing down the wood flooring. A minute later, Tommy heard the front door open and close. He doesn’t know how long he stood there, staring at the hallway half-expecting for Tubbo to come running back to agree to help Tommy find Ranboo.

He didn’t.
