What are your thoughts on Cagliostro being a previous Roa?
The idea of Roa being as much of a historical nuisance to the Clock Tower as he was to the Holy Church is tremendously funny, but the few Count scenes really sell the image of Cagliostro as a swindler first and foremost. He also talks nothing like Roa.

The TOP 3 results of this poll will move on to the final round of Summoning Polls!
PRETENDER:
Liars, heroes that can even deceive the World around them with unparalleled ease. They exist within fiction, their identities forgeries and their True Names lacking the 'truth' that others possess, making them difficult adversaries.

Genuinely going fucking insane at this prospect what if Alessandro Conte di Cagliostro was a snake-themed character and tied to avengers (I genuinely believe that given his downfall and manner of death he could qualify for that class, or at least appear in the chapter related to it) and was hot. i want to try and temper my expectations but this is too insane
Tumblr media
THE WORST IS THAT IT'S SO BELIEVABLE...
he literally looks pale with red eyes like a creature dwelling in darkness? in prison ? doesn't it work too well?

hey this is an odd question but
does anybody know of an explicitly transgender anime girl alchemists named after 18th century italian occultist Count Alessandro di Cagliostro BESIDES the ones in granblue fantasy and symphogear?
obvs having two is already a fascinating data point but if we had three it would warrant a whole study imo

The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University has its annual SMFA Art Sale this weekend, benefiting financial aid for students and other important programs. I've got 2 items on offer in this year's sale, which for the first time in two years is in person this Friday through Sunday, 4--6 November, at the school. My two pieces are Count Alessandro di Cagliostro and Do You Take Venmo?. Please note that the catalog you can download from the Sale website only includes highlights of an event that will feature over 1,000 pieces over the course of the weekend, rotating on and off the walls and pedestals of the atrium, gallery, and elsewhere in the main building. There will not be a complete online catalog this year. So if you are looking to buy either of my pieces and do not see the piece you want on the wall, ask them. The show is open to the public 10 AM -- 8 PM this Friday, 4 November, and 10 AM -- 5 PM this Saturday and Sunday, 5--6 November. No public reception is planned; there will be a reception Saturday evening for alumni and faculty, but I'll probably not attend. I may drop in on the sale itself, most likely tomorrow (Friday), so if you want to see me, email me at [email protected] and we can see how to coordinate. The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (do the students still call it the "Museum School"?) is at 230 The Fenway, Boston, only a block from the Museum of Fine Arts on Huntington Avenue. The Green Line stops nearby at the MFA stop on the E (Heath Street) branch; MBTA buses #8, #9, #19, #22, #28, #39, #47, CT2, and CT3 stop at or near the corner of Huntington and Ruggles/Louis Prang. There is a parking garage around the corner from the school entrance, on Museum Road.

Thoughts on Alessandro di Cagliostro profile because jeez
I said yesterday that Sakurai still had the chance to do the funniest thing, and my answer to that is:
Haha.
Anyway, with the way his intro describes him as an enemy of the rich and hero of the poor (hello again, Douman), Althotas being described as his childhood mentor, and one of his Skills being called I Am Acharat, it's pretty clear that he's a lot more based in Dumas's fictionalization of Cagliostro in the real historical man. Better for the Dantès parallels, I suppose. And all the more reason to bring Dumas to Chaldea already.
One intriguing thing it says is that Giuseppe Balsamo is as much of a fake identity as Alessandro di Cagliostro. Well, considering he's primarily Dumas's Balsamo, I suppose his original identity should be Prince Acharat. And if that's the case, he's not even European.
Either way, the profile's idea that he doesn't have a true self at all— that Balsamo, Acharat, Cagliostro, etc. are all characters he invents and portrays—is a neat answer to why his associates saw him as "lifeless" and what makes him a born Pretender.
I like how the Fraud Skill that he frequently mentions and uses in the story comes masked under the name I Am Acharat. It's just really flavorful that this Skill specifically is built with a layer of lies in the description. The layers of lies in his profile's telling of his story as a whole are pretty nifty.
Rébellion au Monde is... eh, better explained in the story than in the profile.
And the Douman part is... certainly something. I did not have "a lore explanation for why Cagliostro says NNNNN" in my bingo card. But what matters is that if at this point anyone still doubted that Douman is loyal to his Master, here we have more evidence to present.

16th October 1793, previous Queen of France prior to the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette, then called ‘Widow Capet’, is executed by guillotine. Convicted of high treason by the Revolutionary Tribunal, she is executed at the Place de la Révolution, following the execution of her husband King of France Louis XVI, which took place on the 21st January 1793. Labelled as ‘Madame Deficit’, for her extravagant lifestyle, and lack of understanding of the economic problems facing France prior to the Revolution; her reputation was further tarnished during the "Diamond Necklace Affair", in which she was falsely accused of defrauding the crown jewels and the jewelers in order to purchase a very expensive necklace. The affair also involved the Italian adventurer, magician, alchemist, occultist and free mason Giuseppe Balsamo, who self styled himself Count Alessandro di Cagliostro. Marie Antionette also is falsy associated with the story in which she misunderstood the cries of the French poor for bread, as being cries of dissatisfaction for eating bread, in which she replied. ‘Let them eat cake’. This account actually derives from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, ‘confessions’, and was published in 1782, and is not based upon Marie Antionette. Due to these accusations, and other false accounts, such as her affair with Lafayette, whom she actually hated, and incest with her son; she was tried and convicted with her execution already arranged before her trial. Her head was then given to Marie Tussaud for the making of a wax death mask, and her body thrown into an unmarked grave. If I had a nickle for every time I saw a piece of Japanese media turn famous occultist, alchemist, and magician Count Alessandro di Cagliostro into a super powered immortal transwoman or use his name for such a reference I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice, right?
