Organizers are Fighting Ron DeSantis's Educational Bans with Free Books
Florida's Dream Defenders are working with the local DSA, book publishers, authors, and more to bring books to young people.
Tumblr media
by Lexi McMenamin
Education in the state of Florida is under siege. During the first Black History Month since the passage of governor Ron DeSantis’s “Stop W.O.K.E. Act,”  Florida teachers papered over their bookshelves over unclear punishments for sharing materials with students regarding “race and diversity in schools and in the workplace, particularly anything that discusses privilege or oppression based on race.” In an interview with the New Yorker, the president of the Florida Education Association estimated that a third of the state’s counties were instructed to cover up their bookshelves until confirmation that the materials were allowed under Florida law.
During the same period, DeSantis’s administration took credit for the College Board’s announcement that they would be updating their AP African American studies curriculum. Commentators noted that many of the changes made were subjects critically highlighted by the state’s Department of Education and education commissioner in the weeks before. The changes included the removal of “Black Lives Matter, slavery reparations, and queer theory as required topics, and it adds a section on Black conservatism,” per Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!.
While these headlines may be shocking, they come as no surprise to those on the ground in Florida. “It's in line with things that he's always had planned for Florida, and we've always known what his ideas were and what he planned to do to us. So it's shocking, but it's not surprising,” Alisha Cox, an organizer with the Florida-based Dream Defenders, told Teen Vogue. So Dream Defenders got to work, connecting with leftist publishers including Haymarket Books, Verso, and PM Press, to distribute books and literature to Florida students.

My very last comic for The Nib! End of an era! Transcription below the cut. instagram / patreon / portfolio / etsy / my book / redbubble
The first event I went to with GENDER QUEER was in NYC in 2019 at the Javits Center.
So many of the people who came to my signing were librarians, and so many of them said the same thing: "I know exactly who I want to give this to!" Maia: "Thank you for helping readers find my book!" While working on the book, I was genuinely unsure if anyone outside of my family and close friends would read it. But the early support of librarians and two American Library Association awards helped sell two print runs in first year.
Since then, GENDER QUEER been published in 8 languages, with more on the way: Spanish, Czech, Polish, French, Italian, Norwegian, Portugese and Dutch.
It has also been the most banned book in the United States for the past two years. The American Library Association has tracked an astronomical increase in book challenges over the past few years. Most of these challenges are to books with diverse characters and LGBTQ themes. These challenges are coming unevenly across the US, in a pattern that mirrors the legislative attacks on LGBTQ people. The Brooklyn Public Library offered free eCards to anyone in the US aged 13-21, in an effort to make banned books more available to young readers. A teacher in Norman, Oklahoma gave her students the QR code for the free eCard and lost her job. Summer Boismeir is now working for the Brooklyn Public Library. Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive, apps used to access digital library books, are now banned in Mississippi to anyone under 18. Some libraries won’t allow anyone under 18 to get any kind of library card without parental permission. When librarians in Jamestown, Michigan refused to remove GENDER QUEER and several other books, the citizens of the town voted down the library’s funding in the fall 2022 election. Without funding, the library is due to close in mid-2024. My first event since covid hit was the American Library Association conference in June 2022 in Washington, DC. Once again, the librarians in my signing line all had similar stories for me: “Your book was challenged in our district" "It was returned to the shelf!" "It was removed from the shelf..." "It was moved to the adult section."
Over and over I said: "Thank you. Thank you for working so hard to keep my book in your library. I’m sorry you had to defend it, but thank you for trying, even if it didn't work." We are at a crossroads of freedom of speech and censorship. The future of libraries, both publicly funded and in schools, are at stake. This is massively impacting the daily lives of librarians, teachers, students, booksellers, and authors around the country. In May 2023, I read an article from the Washington Post analyzing nearly 1000 of the book challenges from the 2021-2022 school year. I was literally on route to a festival to talk about book bans when I read a startling statistic. 60% of the 1000 book challenges were submitted by just 11 people. One man alone was responsible for 92 challenges. These 11 people seem to have made submitting copy-cat book challenges their full-time hobby and their opinions are having an outsized ripple effect across the nation. WE NEED TO MAKE THE VOICES SUPPORTING DIVERSE BOOKS AND OPPOSING BOOK BANS EVEN LOUDER. If you are able too, show up for your library and school board meetings when book challenges are debated. Send supportive comments and emails about the Pride book display and Drag Queen story hours. If you see a display you like– for Banned Book Week, AAPI Month, Black History Month, Disability Awareness Month, Jewish holidays, Trans Day of Remembrance– compliment a librarian! Make sure they feel the love stronger than the hate <3

Where's Waldo?
Where’s Waldo?
I love a good scavenger hunt and one that involves Waldo is even better. You remember Waldo. That cute bespectacled guy with the red and white striped shirt and the blue pants? He is the star of many books over the years and was a favorite of our boys when they were growing up. Where’s Waldo books littered our coffee table over the years and triumphant cries of “I found him” were always fun to…

free shipping with BookShop.Org this Prime Day
Tumblr media
on July 11 & 12, 2023, BookShop.Org will offer free shipping to entice book buyers to buy from them rather than Amazon. BookShop is an independent seller owned by a small group of investors, the American Booksellers Association, and employees, and they donate to and partner with independent bookstores around the U.S. to benefit brick-and-mortar indies.
(you can read their "about" here.)
unfortunately, BookShop only ships within the U.S., although they do have a UK branch. (I'm not sure whether the UK branch is offering free shipping for Prime Day, but if you're UK-based it's worth checking!) but if you're U.S.-based and would like to buy The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher (or any other books) with free shipping and WITHOUT supporting Amazon this Prime Day, you can order through BookShop!
additionally, Edna's fantastical journey canonically begins on July 11 - the same day the free shipping starts. what better time to buy the book than the very day it begins?
orders over $100 will also receive a BookShop branded tote bag, which according to the email I received about this whole thing is their first-ever merch.
(I am not associated with BookShop. although I did sign up as an affiliate and do get a small commission when people buy through my affiliate links, which the buy links in this post are. but they didn't ask me to advertise. I'm just an author whose book starts on July 11, just like the free shipping.)
anyway, this Prime Day please consider buying The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher through not-Amazon. the book is an adult contemporary fantasy about an 83-year-old who leaves the nursing home for fantastical adventure and gets oodles of found family.

Sobbing, yawning, eating leftovers.
Heyyyyy Raise family! It's the weekend. Finally. Whether it's another epic Fri-yay! or you celebrated People Getting Together and Eating Lots of Carbs Day yesterday and are leaning into Native American Heritage Day today, or maybe you’re getting the jump on your holiday shopping, we hope you're doing well. (´• ω •`) ♡
Reminder: Konishi is on hiatus so there is no new Japanese chapter this month! The next Japanese chapter will be released around Christmas and our version will go up January 15th, 2024 when we're back from our holiday travels and celebrations. We appreciate your patience!
More reminder: If you're collecting the licensed English physicals/digitals, Volume 6 will be available on that big site we all use, or your local bookseller/chain bookstore, on January 16th, 2024.
Mentioning this because it has one of the best covers. In case you needed to be reminded of how hot these two are. ☆*:.。.( ̄﹃ ̄)

Meanwhile back at JBS HQ: We're chillin' like villains and chatting with our new member, Boudicea, who has mad skills. She did a great job updating CH37.1, which included several Twitter sketches Konishi made in 2021 featuring Shouma. Poor sweet boy has a shitty memory. Riiiiip Morisaki-san. (*ノωノ)
One more month to go until the new chapter!

11 titles in the top 50! If anyone has a subscription to The Bookseller, please let me know if it gives the source for the top 50 as I can't find anything anywhere. The only list I can find is from the American Booksellers Association and that's a top 25.
Little over a third of books by female authors on that list are by Sarah. No other female author has multiple books on there, and the majority (if not all) of Sarah's books on that list are from her ACO series.
Where's the variety? And what about her ACO series makes it so popular compared to her first series?

“We were thrilled to learn that the ABA was ready to move their records into a library,” says Courtney Chartier, the Director of the RBML. “Columbia already has the country’s premier collection on the publishing industry, and the ABA collection will bring an essential new facet to the story, ensuring that the voices of independent booksellers are never lost.”  “The RBML is open to the general public, and welcomes thousands of researchers from all over the world every year,” adds Kevin Schlottmann, the RBML’s Head of Archives Processing. “Historians, literature scholars, students, and of course booksellers themselves will be able to dive into the rich history of ABA documented in this archive.”

Tumblr media
by Ed Nawotka
Online bookseller Bookshop.org will begin selling e-books by the of the year. It will also publish its first book, Our Strangers by Lydia Davis, in October.
According to Andy Hunter, founder and CEO of Bookshop.org, the initial rollout of will enable users to buy and read e-books in their web browser. The program will launch in Beta late this year. An e-reader app is also being developed and will be launched sometime thereafter.
"We are building the platform entirely from scratch," said Hunter. "We want to give independent bookstores a way to sell e-books and capture those sales that they are losing to Amazon," Hunter told PW during an interview at the American Booksellers Association's Winter Institute in Seattle.
Bookshop.org already has strong ties with the independent bookselling community. Beginning March 1, IndieBound.org, the ABA's consumer-facing online bookselling and marketing platform, will switch to using Bookshop.org to handle sales and fulfillment. 1992 Chronicle Books Installation by Gee + Chung design. Source: https://geechungdesign.com/case-studies/chroniclebooks-05.html
Chronicle Books is an innovative publisher of high-quality illustrated books on design, food, literature, collectibles, pop culture, and travel. At the American Booksellers Association Show, Chronicle sought to convey they are a publisher who “sees things differently.” Our solution for the publisher’s 30' x 30' cross-aisle exhibit represented a striking departure from the typical rows of bookshelves and backlit light boxes attendees normally walk right by, instead creating a retail-like environment which invites visitors to come in, pick up the books, and linger. Each display represented the values Chronicle stood for, using a giant gear, ladder, staircase, and abstract figure as metaphors for work, progress, attainment, and humanity.
These symbolic elements combined to form a highly engaging environment for attendees, using a Constructivist aesthetic and simple, industrial materials to create a “machine” for the display of books. Natural maple and galvanized aluminum panels provide the ideal neutral backdrops to highlight Chronicle’s colorful collection. The eye-catching tradeshow became a must-see for show attendees, as the booth broke new ground in what a booksellers booth could be, and what an exhibit could convey about a company. The distinctive exhibit helped the San Francisco-based publisher stand out within the New York dominated publishing industry as a firm who “sees things differently,” and was instrumental to creating a unique market niche for the specialty publisher.

Independent bookstores grew in number and diversity in 2021
The American Booksellers’ Association, an American trade organization for independent booksellers, has reported it’s highest membership number in years. This has occurred even despite the ABA’s tightening restrictions for membership, including that members must “primarily” sell books (that is, books make up over 50% of the inventory).
In 2021, over a hundred new stores have joined the association, dozens of which are owned by individuals from minority racial and ethnic groups.

I saw some booksellers talking about going to Winter Institute. What is that/what do they do there?
Winter Institute is a bookseller conference / trade show put on by the American Booksellers Association. There are professional development opportunities (panels / workshops / etc), networking opportunities (parties, author events, etc), keynote speakers, the publishers come and promote books, etc. It's fun!
(In the summer there's also Children's Institute, aka "Kidstitute", which is the same thing but specific to kid's books. And in fall, each part of the country has a smaller regional trade show.)
