What do you think about recent 5G leaks from Bleeding Cool?
If you've been living under a rock, never fear I shall ramble on about this whole initiative.
Tumblr media
5G - short for "Fifth Generation" - was to be the next big DC reboot, albeit one that recanonized everything instead of erasing what came before. Now the characters which had previously operated on a sliding timeline attached to vague dates, would be allowed to actually age. Superman's rocket would land in 1938 Smallville, and Clark would be elderly and past his prime by "modern" time. Jon would have taken over his role as Superman, alongside other legacy heroes such as Yara Flor Wonder Woman and a Batman who was the son of Lucius Fox (Luke originally, but after Ridley was recruited then it was Jace). It would have been an upheaval on par with the New 52, the classic heroes all either retired, dead, or sidelined for various reasons, and their heirs would generally not have been the traditional choices, Jon aside. If you want a really in-depth analysis of 5G prior to the recent Bleeding Cool reports, I recommend checking out this which does a lot of solid guesswork with regards to what 5G work was salvaged and retooled for other projects.
Now on to what Bleeding Cool has shared about what were the plans for 5G:
Tumblr media
Batman
At the end of Joker War Batman would have let the Joker go in return for the Joker promising to kill Bane for him, in retaliation for Alfred's death.
Joker does indeed honor his promise and kills Bane. This would then lead into a miniseries, Batman: Last Days where Batman would have been consumed by guilt over letting this happen. Because of the new 5G timeline, Bruce would also have been in his sixties, and forced to face the fact that he simply isn't physically cut out to be Batman anymore.
Traveling the world to dismantle Batman Inc, as well as try and salvage his relationship with the Batfamily along the way, Bruce finally retires in England. He would have asked the rest of the Batfamily to let Batman die, and most of the Batfamily would have respected his request. Tom Taylor and Andy Kubert were originally going to handle this series and their work got turned into Batman: The Knight.
Meanwhile back in Gotham, Luke Fox would have decided to take up the mantle of Batman in a New Batman series.
Damian would have felt betrayed by his father's decision to retire and would have chosen to replace his grandfather Ra's as head of the League of Assassins and his mother as head of Leviathan. This would have led to a Batman vs. Robin event where Luke and Damian would have fought each other. Jon would have been involved too, with Damian viewed Jon spending so much time with the Legion as tantamount to abandoning him, and ultimately Luke and Jon would have joined forces against Damain, but the two would not have trusted each other at first.
Tamara Fox, Luke's older sister, would have become her brother's Robin against his wishes.
In 2023 the Joker would have made his return after a long period away in The Hunt for Batman, seeking to test the new Batman Luke. Joker would have outed Bruce's identity as Batman and revealed the promise he made to kill Bane which caused Bruce to let him go. Luke would have wanted to bring Bruce in, but Bruce would have decided to surrender to the Gotham authorities and then he would be put on trial where he would have been found guilty. The Justice Alliance would have supported Luke and been opposed to Bruce, with his old villains gunning for Bruce in one last attempt at revenge.
Tumblr media
Superman
For 5G the plan was that riding the high of revealing himself, Clark would have started pressuring the other Leaguers to ditch their secret identities too. Within the League there would be much discussion and debate over whether or not this was the smart thing to do, with Batman being adamantly opposed.
Jon would not have been happy with his dad's choice because of the greater scrutiny it would have placed him under. Only trips to the future and spending time with the LoSH would have offered Jon escape.
Same as Bruce, Clark would be in his sixties in the "present" and discovered that his powers were fading. Handing the mantle and job of protecting Metropolis to Jon, Clark and Lois would have moved to Africa where he would have become a different type of hero.
Jon and Jenny Sparks would have become a couple as part of Jon replacing his dad in a New Superman series. Learning of a terrible fate awaiting the Earth from his time with the Legion, Jon would have fought a "neverending" battle to make sure it would not come to pass.
Clark would not have been able to sit on the sidelines for long and would have been building a secret Authority team to compensate for his loss in power. Ultimately Jenny would have joined the team too.
Seeing Bruce put on trial would have pushed Clark to step into the spotlight again, with the aid of his Authority team Clark would have broken Bruce out of prison and set up a Superman vs. Superman storyline where Clark and Jon would be on opposite sides, fighting with each other over what it means to be Superman.
Tumblr media
Justice League
There would have been a weekly JL series exploring the 5G timeline and leading up to the dissolution of the League called JL: The Last Call. Brian Bendis, KSD, Matt Fraction, and Greg Rucka would have been the writers for the series.
Come Fall 2021 there would be an event called Changing of the Guard which would have facilitated the mantle handoffs from Clark and Bruce's gen to Jon and Luke's.
Tumblr media
Justice Alliance
This would have been the replacement for the JL, with it's origin in Jon and Luke teaming up against Damian. There would have been a World's Finest event comic that would have seen Jon learning the value of the Superman/Batman partnership and ultimately culminated in the two forming a new team composed of Jon, Luke, Yara, Jo, and a new Flash who was the child of Captain Boomerang. Tim Sheridan would have written this and he seemingly used his ideas for the new Flash to create Bolt for Titans Academy.
In 2024 there would have been a Superman/Batman Against The DC Universe event where the entire DC hero community would have had to chose between Clark and Bruce or Jon and Luke, basically DC's Civil War. Clark would have undergone a process to restore his power levels which would have worked, but his power levels would keep growing to the point he would have become a threat to Earth itself.
Ultimately Bruce would have done something that would kill both himself and Clark as a way of ending the threat Clark posed, saving Earth, and preventing the future Jon learned about from coming to pass. Jon and Luke would therefore have continued as the only Superman and Batman. Unless...
The whole thing flopped saleswise in which case Didio was building an escape hatch to undo 5G and restore Clark and Bruce back to their spots as Superman and Batman in 2025, when DC and WB would have stepped back and judged whether 5G was a success or a failure.
Other 5G Tidbits
Ram V's The Swamp Thing was basically him taking his 5G Swamp Thing pitch and just doing it without 5G.
Jeff Lemire was going to write the Tangent Green Lantern hand off her Lantern to someone in the main universe, which would have placed that successor at the center of a 5G horror line.
A Lost Green Lantern Corps series was planned of seven depowered GLs hired to protect a planet.
Reading all of it, my main takeaways is that all of the Jon solo stuff sounds awesome and all of the Clark stuff sounds awful. If 5G had gone ahead I think Jon might have actually been accepted as a worthy successor to Clark. Fraction likely would have given us some of the best Superman content we've ever gotten and it would have been with Jon as the protagonist. Jon dating Jenny Sparks in a series potentially written by Matt Fraction sounds exponentially better than the utterly bland and lifeless series we've gotten under Tom Taylor. Probably still would have gotten a bisexual Jon too, and maybe he would have even had a boyfriend with a personality as opposed to the drab Jay with whom there is no chemistry or sparks (I'm sorry I couldn't resist).
Everything about Clark is a mix of hilarious and infuriating. He's the one who causes the JL to dissolve, he retires to Africa - just like he did in Future's End which makes me think Didio was really enamored with that idea for some reason - and builds a super powered hit squad in secret which totally is at odds with him previously being all about being open. Safe bet he did that behind Lois' back, which feasibly could have led to the two divorcing and Lois siding with Jon. Bruce has to kill both Clark and himself to prevent Clark from destroying the Earth, and it doesn't seem like Clark and Jon would have reconciled before the end. Which means -
Tumblr media
- this is basically the 5G final fate of the Earth 0 Superman! Dying a failure at the end of a battle with his son, whom he constantly undermined and never let take charge. Even if Fraction's Jon book absolutely kicked ass, there would have been a backlash from the Clark diehards regardless. Speaking as someone who is quite fond of Clark and was excited at Jon's potential, in case that wasn't obvious, I would have been pissed at this being his "permanent" exit from the spotlight.
Batman's side of 5G sounds doomed to failure. The whole concept of Bruce being put on trial for Joker killing Bane sounds idiotic, Luke being determined to bring him in for that was not going to endear him to Bruce's fanbase. Pitting the new Batman - who was already going to be controversial by nature of being black and "cutting in line" ahead of the other choices regardless of how that was facilitated - against Bruce is insane. Bruce is the most popular DC hero and the general consumer base was NEVER going to side with Luke/Jace against him. Luke/Jace's sales would have absolutely tanked in the wake of Bruce's death, which I'm sure people would have blamed Luke/Jace for. Batman's fanbase would have been outright radicalized against the new guy, and if DC can't rely on Batman selling well, then they would have been screwed. For that reason alone I doubt 5G would have lasted beyond the 5 years Johns predicted it would last in Doomsday Clock. Sales would have forced DC to end the experiment and bring Bruce and Clark back to life.
Furthermore, the Justice Alliance book was going to be written by Tim Sheridan? That's who Didio picked to write what would have been the flagship book? No offense to the guy but a new Justice team meant to replace the JL needs an A-List writer. His Titans Academy book was dull in the extreme, none of his other comic work has been better than "ok". Puts the lie to claims that Didio was going to make sure that the 5G books had great creative teams because they "needed to put their best foot forward". Telling that there's no real info on what the plans were for WW, or Aquaman, or Flash beyond Yara, Jackson, and initially Bolt being their planned replacements.
Tumblr media
If 5G had gone ahead it would have been the New 52 2.0. Some great books would have been put out, likely the side books which would have been sadly overlooked, but the main core would have been trash. Fraction's Jon book might have been the equivalent to Scott Snyder's Batman run, an oasis of stability amidst constant implosions, but it alone could not make up for what seems like Didio running the line straight into the wall with his micromanaging. We ended up getting the good Clark books we would have gotten in 5G anyway with Morrison doing Superman & The Authority and Russell doing Space Age. Jon drew the short straw but the current era has simply been better overall for Superman than what we would have gotten, and there's still a chance that someone can salvage Jon. 5G being cancelled was a good thing after all.

Does Jace really count as taking over for Bruce as Batman if he’s moving to NYC though?
Jace has not necessarily 'taken over' for Bruce, because that was not really the intent of his becoming Batman. Jace is using the symbol because of his own reasons- using what the Bat stands for to fight the fight he thinks needs to be fought. It feels far more motivated by Jace knowing that his own family is connected to the Bat than anything else.

But he's still... using the mantle. The world is not without a Batman, that's the relevant thing here. Yes he's not gonna be in Gotham, but there are all the other Bats in Gotham, and there is a Batman out there. He's still carrying on the legacy.

Puppy Love Pt. 2
@elloryia (homework assignment number two!)
“JASON PETER WILSON!”
He cringed at the sound of his full name. Even though he was an adult and lived on his own, there was nothing more terrifying than a parent shouting out one’s entire name. He looked down at the puppy snoozing in his lap and sighed. He didn’t know why, but he was sure the little shit was the reason he was in for it with Dad.
The door to the room he’d claimed for himself swung open as Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, aka, Dad stood holding up a gun holster. Jason flinched at the sight and set his book down beside him on the floor to give Dad and the object his full attention. The leather had definitely been chewed up by tiny, sharp puppy teeth that undoubtedly belonged to Lucky.
“Since when do you own a dog?” Dad snarled; his pale blue eye focused intently on Lucky.
“C-couple weeks ago,” Jason answered. “Just after I took care of the judge. I didn’t mean to adopt it, I just sort of …did.”
“Adopt it?” Dad’s left brow raised. “It’s a dog, Jason. Not a child.”
Jason shrugged, not sure how this argument was going to land. If he fought with Dad, Jason would lose if only because his father was by far the more stubborn of the two. If Jason didn’t fight about it, Dad would think he didn’t really care about keeping Lucky. Jason was going to have to tread carefully, especially since the next few missions he had were with the ornery old man.
“He was drowning,” Jason started. “I thought he would die so I took him to a vet hospital. They managed to keep the pup alive and they kind of assumed it was mine and I paid for the medical bills and now he’s mine.”
His father stared skeptically. “You’re hiding something,”
“What?”
“You heard me,” Dad said. “What are you keeping out of the story?”
“Oh uh,” Jason blushed and knew he’d given himself away with his heated cheeks and stuttering.
“If this is about some piece of ass, Jace, I swear,” Dad warned with a growl.
“It’s not like that!” he insisted.
“Oh please,” his father rolled his eye. “It’s never like that with you, until it is. I thought Joey was going to be the slut.”
“Hey!” Jason laughed, scratching at Lucky’s ear. “Don’t slut shame me.”
“You’re either ashamed or you aren’t, you’re the one that chooses to sleep around like one,” Dad shrugged, but there was a glimmer of humor in his eye that told Jason he wasn’t as angry as first thought. “Let’s see him.”
Jason got off the floor where he’d been cuddling with Lucky and reading a book. He walked over and passed the puppy to his dad.
Dad looked the dog over carefully, checking Lucky’s teeth, paws, docked tail, and looking under his floppy ears. Lucky attempted to lick at Dad’s hands a few times or nip at passing fingers, but Dad had plenty of experience with animals. Grant was still a dog lover, while Joey preferred cats. Rose had a fucking bird of all things.
“You dock its tail?”
“No, Sir,” Jason shook his head. “Dick said it was done by whoever owned it prior. Likely the whole litter and this one either didn’t get itself adopted or was abandoned by whoever bought it.”
Dad nodded and then handed the animal back. “It’s probably for the best. They get to whipping those tails about and then they break and get infected.”
“Dick said so, too.”
“I take it that’s the piece of ass?”
Jason rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but he’s a good guy. He’s intelligent and sweet.”
“And when we head out of Gotham and on to Paris? You gonna take the pet doctor with? You gonna bring Lucky along?”
“Lucky yes,” Jason nodded.
“Not Dick?”
“No, Sir. Dr. Richard Grayson is the adopted son of one Bruce Wayne,” Jason sighed. “Which means…”
Dad’s eye narrowed but not angrily. There was excitement in the old man’s eye and that was as worrisome as if he’d been pissed off by the news. Jason really should have known better. Dad been trying to figure out how to get one over on the Bat since their last feud.
“Batman isn’t on our list and we wouldn’t take a job on him even if one was put out,” Jason reminded. “He’s good for this shithole.”
“Fuck Batman,” Dad sneered.
“You’re just pissed off because he got in your face about having a teenage ‘sidekick’.” Jason laughed.
He would know. He was the side-kick. Jason had been training with his dad from the moment he’d been taken into the Wilson family. There weren’t a lot of vigilantes that allowed young teens or even friends to run around with them. Jason was sure Green Arrow and Black Canary had, but Batman, Superman, and Flash had never allowed such a thing and it was pretty well known that they disapproved greatly of anyone that did.
Cape or Villain.
“Think your boyfriend knows what Bruce is?” Dad asked.
Jason frowned. He didn’t want to use Dick for that. Had he realized that Dr. Grayson was that Grayson, he probably never would have returned for his jacket. Or Lucky. Batman and Deathstroke weren’t what you’d call enemies, but Dad delighted in irritating the Bat any chance he could. Especially since getting lectured by Batman about “foolishly endangering the life of a child”. Batman refusing to fight didn’t help, either. Dad saw it as unfinished business.
“I don’t and I won’t find out either. It’s not really any of my business.” Jason sighed.
“It is when Batman tries to stop us from doing what we’re being paid to do.” Dad argued. “When are you seeing him again?”
Jason blushed again, unable to help it.
“You have a date tonight, don’t you?”
He nodded, knowing it wouldn’t do him any good. “Yes, I’m meeting his family.”
“At Wayne Manor?” Dad said with a grin.
Jason closed his eyes but nodded none the less. He really, really should have run screaming from Gotham the moment he found out who Dick Grayson’s father was.
He was so boned.

equal, hermano
The second Rafael and Max were through the front door of the loft Max ducked, practically running, into their shared room the slam of the door reverberating across the whole apartment. Rafe let out a deep sigh, he knew his little brother would have locked the door by now so he dropped his bag by the door and shuffled towards the kitchen. Defeat was not a feeling Rafe enjoyed, neither was helplessness. Especially when it concerned his little brother.
He was born lucky, he knew it-he'd been raised to know and appreciate that fact. As a shadowhunter birthright is often the first thing you're taught at the institute. But his parents had also taught him the privilege it bought him in their world, the struggles he would never have to face all because he got lucky in the lottery of existence. Many in their world would tell him his brother was born unlucky, pulled the short straw. The same was often said about his Papa. Rafe never really understood it all, all he saw of them was the fact Max healed every injured creature he came across since the age of three, and the fact his Papa conjured waffles when he was sad, Max made runes dance on the ceiling in shimmering purple when studying was melting his brain, his Papa helped save the world. He didn't understand the people who hated them. He doubted he ever would. He also would never understand the people making his little brother want to lock himself away in their room. Rafe knew he needed to think of something. To him, Max had always been equal sometimes he even considered the fact Max was superior to him in plenty of ways. He and his family saw Max like that, but he wanted everyone to.
That's when the idea hit him. Rounding the corner into the kitchen, he heard the soft hum of classical music-his Dads favourite- and saw his fathers gently swaying along together as they prepared dinner. Perfectly in-sync with each other. He almost didn't want to interrupt. Almost.
'Uh. Dad, Papa, can I ask you about something?'
They both jumped a little at the presence of their son bursting the little bubble they'd created but composed themselves quickly.
Magnus spoke first.
'Of course sweet pee, always. What's up?' Both Magnus and Alec had lent against the breakfast bar, opposite their eldest son sitting on the bar stool.
'How does the alliance rune work?'
Neither of them was prepared for that question-it was written all over their faces. They shared a glance. With that glance they shared a whole a conversation, Alec placed his hand gently on the back of Magnus' arm just above his elbow-their secret sign of support.
'Well, your Aunt Clary saw it just before the war with Valentine.' Magnus always said his name like that, as if it left a bitter taste in his mouth. His whole family did. Rafe hadn't heard it all, but he was sure it did.
Alec continued, they always spoke like this. Flowing perfectly one after the other-together.
'It binds the two who share it, I and your father share it with each other. I can use your Papas abilities, as he can use mine. I could use it to conjure a portal, and he could light up a seraph blade.'
They both got a faraway look in their eyes as Magnus finished.
'I'm almost certain that rune saved at least a thousand lives. Certainly mine and your Dads. But it was also a changing moment in the relationship between Shadowhunters and Downworlders. We fought side by side. It was truly incredible.'
Alec's arm had slid entirely around Magnus' waist as he'd been talking. Rafe's perfect example of the two worlds unity. They'd always taught him unity was strength. Love was power, and alliance was always the answer.
He knew exactly what needed to be done. He smiled broadly, a determined glint in his eye.
'Are they busy tonight?' They know who he meant. 'Can you get them over in the next half hour? Uncle Simon, Aunt Clary, and Papa are especially important. Uhh, don't tell Jace and Izzy I said that. Or Grandma.'
Alec chuckled. 'Sure buddy, your secrets safe with us, I wouldn't wanna inflict that on anybody. We'll give them all a call now. But, uh, why?'
'I'll explain when they get here, just get calling it needs to happen soon-its important.'
And with that he was gone, flying off the bar stool into the office leaving his parents to share a confused look before dialing the phone.
Exactly thirty minutes later his whole family was assembled in the living room, Rafe sat crossed legged on the coffee table in the center. Magnus and Alec, Alec with a leg slung lazily across his husbands lap, next to each other on the sofa. Jace next to Alec, with his Aunt Clary on the arm of the chair one foot in Jace's lap, the other on Simon's shoulder. Who'd been forced to sit on the floor for arriving last. Aunt Izzy and his grandma sat on the armchairs either ends of the coffee table. The only one missing was Max. Everyone noticed. Rafe began.
'Okay, so you've all noticed our little buddy blueberry isn't here. In fact, he hasn't left our room since we got back from training today.'
Concern spread across each of their faces. Magnus took Alec's hand.
'That's because today someone hurt him, pretty badly. And I don't mean just physically, although that too.'
The concern melted into horror, and cold rage in all of them. Even Rafe felt the buds of it rising again in his stomach. It was Simon who spoke. Always his Uncle Simon to hold some composure. He was good like that.
'What exactly, did they do to him, Rafael?' His voice quiet, as if he didn't really want to hear. He imagined they probably didn't. They'd known Max since he was a baby, tiny and defenseless. That image still hadn't really gone away. Even now he was ten, and able to do magic it took Warlocks hundreds of years to master, he was the family baby.
'Well first of all Max beat this kid in a race, totally fair and square. We got told to use any ability we had, and well Max just happens to be able to teleport. Really they should have been more specific. But anyways. This kid was not happy about that, jealous if you ask me. His pride was hurt, badly. He storms over to Max and calls him a cheater. Then punches him.'
The atmosphere in the room said it all. Fury filled every member of his family, he felt bad telling them about it but they needed to know for this to make sense. He ignored the nauseating feeling rising in his throat as he remembered the rest. He continued.
'This kid is big, I'm talking my age, a head taller than Max and five years of ShadowHunter training literally written all over him. He's towering over Max and I can feel it, you feel his magic you know? That shit is strong-'
'Language Rafael. Just because you're fifteen doesn't mean the rules are off the table.' Cut in his Grandmother.
'Right, sorry. I go jogging over ready to fight this kid for squaring up my baby brother when he swings for him. Now we all know, me from experience, you don't swing at Max. In seconds he's across the room right into a wall.'
They share a glance between them all. The kind only a group of concerned adults can understand. Jace nods at Rafe, silently telling him to go on. Jace is never good at speaking when he's angry.
'Obviously, I'm turning to Max to calm him down when someones shoving me aside and catches Max off guard. He was looking at me, not focussing you know? He gets him. Right in the stomach.' Rafe's voice shakes a little as he continues.
'I'm seeing red. Max is barely recovering when I'm up.I-I broke his nose. You guys can punish me for that later, I don't care about a consequence. But now this kid is humiliated and in pain. A bad combination in a jackass.'
'I can't believe the trainers just let this happen.' Interrupts Maryse. Her voice stern, but the edges laced with anger.
'They weren't there, the kid picked the exact time an important Clave message came through so the trainer had to leave or something. But that isn't the actual bad part, not really anyways. He's yelling at me. A lot of swearing and cursing my family name which I was about to punch him again for-when he notices Max healing a little graze on my elbow from where he pushed me earlier. By the angel, Max is so soft. This kid says stuff that has totally destroyed Max okay. It's bad. I dunno if Papa is even gonna wanna hear it. That kinda stuff.'
Alec squeezes his hand Clary subconsciously looks down at Simon. So does his Aunt Izzy. They aren't stupid, they know the kind of stuff he means. Blue sparks are rising from his Papas other hand, a small burn mark forming in the arm of the chair. His Dads other hand is tapping hard against his thigh. He can see the anger in his Uncle's shoulders, both of them rigid all over. His Aunt Clarys eyebrows were knotted so tightly together it must have been hurting. His Aunt Izzy had an expression that could have killed, he imagined she was wishing it could.
'Its okay sweet pea. I've lived enough years to hear this.' Despite the usually soothing nickname, his Papas tone was ice cold.
Rafes own voice shook, a lump had risen in his throat. He was going to cry.
'He said 'I don't even know why this dirty warlock is even allowed in. He's half demon. Look at what he just did to me, he's dangerous. I guess you really can't tame half breed.' At this point, I'm screaming at him. Ready to rip into him, because Max apologises to plants he steps on and heals injured birds and sleeps in Batman pajamas.' At this point the tears are streaming down Rafes face, his hands shaking.
'He's not dangerous. He's so little he was just scared. Then he turns to me and says the worst part. 'I don't get why you're defending him. You're worse than that dad of yours. A few years ago you'd be hanging his horns on your mantlepiece as a prize. Why is he even part of your twisted little family? He can't even use a seraph blade. You've been tainted by the dirty demons in your house and your faggot of a dad. He then threw a blade at Max and taunted him because he cant use it and told him we'd never be really equal, no matter how brainwashed I was.' Rafe has said it all so fast he was out of breath, the front of his shirt wet with tears.
'Max broke one of his arms and both parts of his left leg. Blew up a light bulb then ran out the room. It took me twenty minutes to catch up with him. He was practically glowing purple he wouldn't let me touch him.'
Everyone in the room was stunned into silence. They'd all surpassed anger into full-blown rage.
'That's why I needed you all to come over. I'm gonna show him we've been equal since his tiny toddler hands made me a flower out of thin air. Aunt Clary, you can still draw that alliance rune right?'
Clary took a moment to compose herself, wiping a tear and sitting up a little straighter and pulling her mouth into a smile.
'Yeah Rafe, I can.'
'Perfect. I'll go get him.'
Outside their bedroom door, Rafe could feel the ice cold sadness of Max's magic. He loved his brother more than anyone, feeling his sadness broke his heart.
'Blueberry, hermano. I've got something to give you. Everyone's here, well because they all care Maxy. You've just gotta come into the living room.' He whispered through the gap under the door.
After a moment the door opened, revealing a tear stain Max. His blue cheeks burning a bright red, Rafe only ever saw them do that when he laughed too hard. He swore they never be red from tears as long as he lived. His blue eyes puffy, curly hair scruffy and disheveled from having a pillow over his head. He hadn't even gotten changed out of his clothes, one trouser leg bunched up around his knee.
'Okay.' Was all he said, barely a whisper. He trailed behind Rafe into the living room.
Concerned eyes follow them both as Rafe goes back to the coffee table. He moves over and gestures for Max to sit next to him. He refuses. Max won't meet any of there eyes. Not even Simons. Max always favoured Simon a little, he could see the heartbreak on his uncles face.
Suddenly Rafe was angry. Angry someone had made his brother feel he didn't deserve to be with his own family Anger Max had believed him.
'Maxy, sit next to me.' He patted the spot next to him again and smiled up at him. 'Come on buddy.'
Max sat on the edge of the table looking down at his Star Wars socks. A gift from Simon the birthday after they'd watched them all together. Max looked like he was about to start burning them off. His parents were holding each others hands so tight their knuckles were white. His Papa looked close to tears but he was wearing his unglamoured eyes- a statement.
'Okay, Aunt Clary lets go.' Rafe stated a cold determination in his tone.
She drew the rune on a piece of paper, it flowing perfectly from her hand.
Rafe took the piece of paper and began copying the rune onto the palm of his hand.
'Turn and face me.' Max did, still not looking up keeping a distance between their knees. Rafe moved forward so they were touching and placed his palm over Max's heart.
'Now you listen to me, Maxwell. You're sat in the middle of a group of people who found a baby, who was bright blue and didn't even consider you being anywhere but with them. They gave you the name Max as a gift. You have a better heart and soul then many a shadowhunter, you can do way more than any of us ever could. So quit crying. And give me your hand.' Rafe smiled as his brother finally met his gaze and placed his hand palm up in his hand.
Rafe traced the rune.
A surge of magic flooded through his system and he almost fell off the table. But something had caught him. His own palm was holding him up, three inches off the ground.
'Now that. Is awesome' Rafe laughed, sat up and looked at his brother.
He handed him a witchlight.
Max hesitated for a moment, he closed his hand around the stone. He'd try this a few times before, the stone always remained cold and blank in his hand. When he opened his palm the stone was alight with a bright light, tinted slightly purple. His face lit up almost as bright as the stone in his hand, and suddenly the tension in the room snapped and everyone jumped and cheered.
'Equal, hermano.' Whispered Rafe, so only his brother could hear.
'Equal, brother.' Max beamed back, the light behind his eyes was enough thanks for Rafe.
The next day when the boys were training together, testing their new found skills Max noticed him coming. Rafe felt the spike in magic as he entered the training room-coming straight for Max.
'Haven't learned your lesson yet warlock?' He sneered.
'Let me make it clear. You can't use our weapons or our runes. So why are you even here?' He dangled a seraph blade in front of Max's face and laughed.
Max took it from him, smiled and lit it up.
Rafe had never been prouder, and when they walked home Max was practically dancing down the street in joy.
That night all the family were over for dinner, Max smiled the entire time.

Top 10 Moments: Young Justice Outsiders episode 17-19
**SPOILERS**
The last 3 episodes saw Young Justice Outsiders focusing on a select group of heroes.  This was a nice change of pace, even if I did miss seeing some of my favorite characters on screen.  Without further ado, here are my top 10 YJ: Outsider moments
10. Joan Garrick passes away
Tumblr media
Episode 18: Early Warning
In episode 18, it is briefly mentioned that Bart and Jaime missed a mission to attend the funeral of Joan Garrick.  Joan is the wife of the original flash, Jay Garrick, and was like a Grandmother to Bart.  Joan’s death is already impacting Jay, as he wanted Bart to leave the Outsiders in episode 19 because of his fear of losing another loved one.  Joan’s death is yet another blow to The Flash family.
09. Troia and Tempest are attacked
Tumblr media
Episode: 19 Elder Wisdom
In this episode, an organization known as B.I.F (Bwundan Independence Front) attacks United Nations delegates Troia, Tempest and Lex Luthor over their support of M’Barra of Bwunda. You later learn that Lex Luthor staged the attack to (1) make the Outsiders look bad to the public and (2) kill Troia and Tempest in the process.  His plan does not go as planned, as Troia and Tempest survive the attack and support for the Outsiders only increase. We also learn that the attack was led by Cassandra Savage and Cheshire.
08. Tara is having second thoughts
Tumblr media
Episodes: 17-19
Throughout all three episodes, Tara has been showing signs that she is conflicted about her mission.  In episode 17, Artemis, Tara and Violet had a sleepover.  It started storming during the sleepover and Artemis asked Tara to hold and soothe Lian, who was scared.  This brought back memories from when Tara was a little girl and would sleep with her parents during storms.  In episode 18,  Tara was training with Artemis.  Unlike her training with Deathstroke, Artemis was patient and compassionate with her.  In episode 19, she appeared to be having a panic attack after Violet disclosed Gabrielle’s part in her parents death.  After all of these instances, she messaged Deathstroke an update to stay on task.  Being around heroes (especially Artemis) is slowly breaking Tara down.  Maybe Tara’s path will change this season.
07. The covert team stages a coup.  Wonder Woman is not pleased
Tumblr media
Episode: 19 Elder Wisdom
In response to Luthor’s staged attack on the Outsiders, Troia and Tempest; the covert team staged their own attack.  Oracle uncovered a factory in Dublin owned by Luthor.  Aquaman, Miss Martian and Nightwing discovered that Luthor was storing weaponized spider bots at the factory. Oracle then sent a fake message about a missing girl to the Outsiders to lead them to the factory.  The missing girl in question was actually Miss Martian in disguise and her father was Batman.  The robots that the Outsiders fought in the episode were actually reprogrammed and being controlled via remote by Robin.  In the end, the Outsiders looked like heroes to the public.  Even though the mission was successful, Wonder Woman was not pleased with the teams actions.  She did not agree with staging false events and creating fake news.  She thoroughly read them the riot act.  While I understand why she’s mad, she needs to take a hard look at who she has aligned herself with.  4 out of the 6 are Bats, Aquaman led a covert mission in season 2 (going so far as to fake Artemis’ death) and Miss Martian was violating people mentally in season 2.  If she feels like her ethics are being compromised, it is best that she leaves this group.
06. Violet is not Muslim
Tumblr media
Episode 18: Early Warning
This scene with Halo will be broken down into several parts as there is a lot to unpack. After “discovering” that she is dying and only has a couple of months to live, Halo went drinking with Harper Row.  You read that right, the high school students,  Violet and Harper, went drinking.  Even though we knew that Violet was a Mother Box, she still held true to some of Gabrielle’s convictions, like wearing the hijab, a head covering worn by Muslim women. While drinking, Violet hesitated for a brief moment, and Harper asked if drinking went against her code because she is Muslim.  Violet simply stated that she is not Muslim and downed her drink. There was a lot of shocking moments in this scene but this one was sad as the Muslim representation vanished with the uttering of 4 words. If you are looking for Muslim representation, CBR published a list of 15 Muslim Characters in Comics You Should Know, because Violet Harper is not it.
05. Harper Row is a bad influence
Tumblr media
Episode 18: Early Warning
To witness the destruction of Violet in this episode was completely shocking. I’ve never been one to blame others for someone’s actions, but I really feel like Harper exacerbated Violet’s situation.  Instead of going home after school with Tara and Fred Bugg, Violet decided to hang out with Harper.  Harper’s idea of a good time was drinking while shooting guns. While drinking, Harper kissed Violet.  Violet pulled away and said she had a boyfriend, to which Harper responds that she does too and they kiss again.  The icing on the cake is when a cop pulls up while Violet was shooting the gun, and pulls her weapon on Violet.  For a brief moment, it seems like Violet was contemplating not putting the gun down, and only did so when Harper told her to.  This resulted in their arrest.  I understand how Violet got on this path, but it was rough to watch.
Cheating on your faithful and doting boyfriend: Check
Underage drinking: Check.
Shooting with an (illegal) gun: Check
A brief standoff with a cop: Check
Getting arrested: Check
Violet needs to stay far away from Harper.  I’m not a fan.
04. Violet confesses Gabrielle Daou’s crimes
Tumblr media
Episode: 19 Elder Wisdom
Racked with guilt, Violet came clean to Brion about kissing Harper.  Brion asked her if she had feelings for Harper, in which she said no, and he forgave her.  Her next confession wasn’t met with such forgiveness.  Violet pulled Tara and Brion into her room and confessed that Gabrielle took a bribe and let their parent’s assassins into the castle. Brion asked Violet how long she knew, and she responded “long enough”.  He rightfully walked away and Tara appeared to be having a mild panic attack.  While hurtful, I’m glad that Violet did the right thing and was truthful with Brion and Tara.  Only time will tell what this means for their relationship.
03. Violet is dying
Tumblr media
Episode 18: Early Warning
This is the news that started the downfall of Violet Harper.  While on her way to school, Dr Jace pulled Violet aside to let her know that she had some of her hair follicles tested and she was dying.  Dr. Jace told her she had months to live but her and a mysterious mentor was working on a way to fix her.  She then low-key manipulated her into keeping her diagnosis a secret from the team because in a couple of weeks, she could be cured.  Of course Violet was devastated, and entries 4-6 were a direct result of this news. I have never been a fan of Dr Jace.  She’s a snake in the grass.  I do not believe that Violet is dying and I think she wants to experiment on her.  I could be wrong but nothing about Dr Jace comes across as sincere to me. We’ll see what “cure” Dr Jace cooks up for Violet.
02.  We finally have our Outsiders team
Tumblr media
Episode 17: First Impression
It took 17 episodes, but we finally have our Outsiders team and their mission.  While the Justice League works behind the scenes, the Outsiders work outside the system, using social media as a vehicle to showcase young heroes doing good deeds to protect citizens.  The Outsiders are led by Beast Boy and consist of Blue Beetle, Kid Flash, Static, Wonder Girl, Geo-Force and El Dorado. #WeareallOutsiders
01. The Outsiders are bigger than the Justice League
Tumblr media
Episode 18: Early Warning
What a statement.  After trending on social media for weeks after multiple successful missions, Courtney Whitmore declares that the Outsiders are bigger than the Justice League.  This has put a huge target on their backs, as the team realizes the responsibility that comes along with that statement.  Let’s see if they rise to the challenge.

a lifetime love, a guarantee
pairing: clary/izzy rating: g word count: 1562
summary: Izzy tells her loved ones the big news.
read on ao3
Izzy taps her long, red nails against the table, fidgets with her straw wrapper, rolling and unrolling it over and over again. Jace and Alec were supposed to be here ten minutes ago, and in their line of work, there’s no shortage of reasons to worry. She’s also nervous about something else: the reason she made this date, actually, but she doesn’t let herself think about that.
Her phone buzzes. Jace and Alec are five minutes away, and can she order them some waffles?
They slide into the booth across from her, still clearly high on adrenaline from a fight. She can see they want to tell her, so she asks, “What happened?”
The story of Behemoth demons lasts until their food comes. Jace winks at the waitress, accepts a plate of Belgian waffles, and asks, “So, Izzy. What did you want to tell us?”
“Oh, um,” she starts, looking around nervously. Taki’s is almost deserted, and it’s not like the two nixies in the corner would care at all about her personal life... and this is all going to be front page news soon enough, anyway.
Izzy smiles. Fake it until you make it, right?
“I think I’m going to propose to Clary.”
She doesn’t expect disapproval, but Alec and Jace’s smiles make her heart swell anyway. Jace claps her on the back, and Alec says, “Congrats, Izzy, that’s great!”
“I never thought we’d get married before you and Magnus, but...” She trails off, and the smiles fade from all of their faces.
“Have you told our dear parents?”
Izzy answers him with an incredulous raise of her eyebrows.
“Sorry to be a downer,” Alec says, moodily taking a sip of water.
There’s a moment of silence between the three of them, and it never used to be so awkward. Isabelle knows it’s everyone else, not them, that’s the problem, but it’s cold comfort.
Jace clears his throat. “So, do you know how you’re going to ask her?”
He’s been so amazingly supportive through all of this; if he was offended by Clary realizing she was a lesbian after their fling, he certainly hasn’t shown it.
“Got any ideas?” she says, grinning again.
Jace rubs his hands together eagerly. “So, there’s this species of monkey...”
***
Izzy rolls over onto her stomach and starts to cry. Her mascara is probably going to stain the pillowcase, but it doesn’t matter.
God, Clary’s going to say no. Izzy is a mess, as exemplified by the late night crying and falling asleep with her makeup on. Her family is a mess, Shadowhunter politics are a mess. After they deal with Valentine, Clary’s never going to want to see a rune again, much less a real, live Shadowhunter....
Izzy heaves a sob, then fumbles for her phone. She scrolls through her contacts slowly, the tears blurring her vision. Her finger hovers over the call button when she reaches Simon’s name.
“Simon.”
He takes a moment to reply. “You do know it’s three in the morning, right?”
“I’m gonna propose to Clary.” It doesn’t sound like the happy news it should be.
“Really? That’s so great, Izzy, I’m so happy for you guys! You—”
“I was, anyway.” She heaves a sigh, and it comes out a shaky crying breath.
“What?” Simon sounds awake now. “Did you guys break up?”
“No, I just—” Izzy wipes her eyes, smearing mascara on the back of her hand. “She’s going to say no. She doesn’t... She’s going to say no.”
“Izzy. Isabelle.” If Simon were here in person, he would have his hands on her shoulders, be staring straight into her eyes. “Clary loves you. She is in love with you. The fact that you two are gonna get married is like, I don’t know, the fact that Batman is gonna beat the Joker. Batman always beats the Joker,” he adds. “Always.”
Comic book analogies don’t make her feel much better. “Really?”
“Have you seen her sketchbook? She’s doodled somebody’s wedding a lot lately. Unless she has some other girlfriend...”
Izzy smiles into the phone. “Thank you, Simon.”
He yawns. “For what?”
She turns over her pillow before going to sleep, and no more makeup runs onto it.
***
Bells jingle as Izzy opens the door to Jade Wolf, and a gust of wind comes in with her. She wipes her feet on the mat and walks over to the corner booth, where Luke is sitting. He puts down his newspaper as she slides into the booth across from him.
“What can I do for you, Isabelle?”
“Is Jocelyn here?” Izzy asks.
“Is something wrong? Is Clary alright?”
Izzy arranges her features into a smile. “No, of course not, everything’s fine. I just wanted to talk to you guys.”
Luke looks annoyingly smug when he gets back with Jocelyn. He and Jocelyn almost definitely know why she’s here, and it’s not like they’re not okay with it, but still. Izzy hasn’t felt this nervous since she fought three Shax demons on her own in the alley behind Pandemonium.
“I just wanted to get your blessing, I guess,” she starts. “Not your permission, Clary can make her own decisions—”
“Of course you have our blessing, honey,” Jocelyn says, taking Izzy’s hand in both of her own. “All we want is for Clary to be happy.”
Luke puts an arm around Jocelyn’s shoulder. “And we couldn’t be happier with her choice.”
“You’ll make a beautiful bride. Both of you,” Jocelyn adds.
Izzy thanks them, but words don’t feel like enough. She can’t wait to be part of this family, already feels more at home across the table from her soon-to-be parents in law than with Maryse and Robert.
***
Isabelle is squeezed in between meetings, Robert and Maryse’s own daughter penciled in on the calendar like a visiting Clave member. She shows up on time, dressed modestly, with her hair up in a practical ponytail. She won’t budge on the heels, though; she feels small enough talking to her parents.
“What is it, Isabelle?” Maryse is impatient, practically tapping her foot on the carpeted floor.
Izzy has the feeling that her parents expect what she has to say, but their anticipation is far from Luke and Jocelyn’s tentative smiles. She sets her jaw, forces herself to look her father in the eye.
“I’m going to ask Clary to marry me.”
Robert coughs into his fist, refuses to meet her stare. He’s going to let Maryse be the bad guy, so he can have plausible deniability later. So he can sleep at night. Her father is nothing if not predictable.
“She’s Valentine’s daughter,” Maryse says, finally.
“We both know that’s not the reason you don’t approve.”
Maryse sighs. “Isabelle, you can make your own decisions,” she says, “but I wish you would consider this family’s reputation.”
Isabelle blinks. “And marrying a decorated war hero hurts it how?”
She knows on some level that no argument will sway her parents, but it feels good to fight with them a little, rub salt in the wound of not having the daughter they wanted.
Her heels sink into the carpet, only clicking against the floor once she’s out of the office.
***
There’s no one left to tell. Everybody knows Isabelle is getting married, except the girl she’s going to spend the rest of her life with. Even the man at the jewelry store where she bought the ring knows; Izzy couldn’t help but correct him when he asked about Mr. Right.
Friday night is date night, and Izzy has a ring and a restaurant reservation and a stomach full of butterflies. She waits for Clary in front of the hostess stand, watching people get seated and the minutes tick by.
“Are you sure you don’t want to sit down, Ma’am?” the hostess asks after twenty minutes.
“I’m sorry—” Izzy starts to say, but then her phone buzzes, and it’s Clary. She steps outside to take the call.
“Hey, Clary, is everything alright?”
“I’m so sorry, Iz, it was just supposed to be a recon mission tonight, but we ran into some demons—everyone’s okay, don’t worry, but I’m not exactly dressed for dinner.”
“So, covered in demon blood,” Izzy fills in.
Clary laughs. “Right, covered in demon blood. I was thinking we could just do date night at the Institute? I’d pick up some Chinese food, but again, the blood...”
Half an hour later, Clary and Izzy and several cartons of lo mein are sprawled on the couch of their apartment. They sit under a blanket and watch a movie, and Izzy wonders if she should wait until next week’s date to pop the question.
When Isabelle thought about this moment as a kid, it wasn’t anything like this. Mostly, she was the one being proposed to, and the person doing the proposing was a man, but it also looked a lot like the restaurant Izzy had planned for tonight. It was never supposed to be Chinese food and Chicken Run, but that’s what tonight is, and she thinks that none of that matters.
What matters it that Izzy is in love with Clary, wants to spend the rest of her life with her, and that makes this night beautiful and special in its own right. Clary laughs at something one of the chickens says, loud and open, and Izzy smiles. She reaches for the little black box.

Interesting how both Jace and Terry are both motivated by guilt to a certain extent, though Terry never killed anyone before becoming Batman (I think).
Yep both of them have a lot of overlap, the big difference is Terry is a street kid who becomes Batman over time as he learns what the mantle means from the guy who defined it. In contrast Jace is from wealth, appropriates the mantle without ever bothering to ask permission from, or learn what it meant to the man who originally defined it, but gave a new purpose to said mantle. Terry also mainly fought the evolution of the same foe Bruce faced: criminals. Jace's main enemy however was going to be the Magistrate, the cops who were worse than the criminals Bruce faced. Terry is the successor who fights the same fight that Bruce did without having the same flaws as Bruce had. Jace is the successor who fights a different fight, but manages to parallel Bruce in ways that validate him as a Batman.
